The 2nd International Workshop on Knowledge Discovery Using Cloud and Distributed Computing Platforms (KDCloud, 2012) provides an international platform to share and discuss recent research results in adopting cloud and distributed computing resources for data mining and knowledge discovery tasks.

Synopsis: Processing large datasets using dedicated supercomputers alone is not an economical solution. Recent trends show that distributed computing is becoming a more practical and economical solution for many organizations. Cloud computing, which is a large-scale distributed computing, has attracted significant attention of both industry and academia in recent years. Cloud computing is fast becoming a cheaper alternative to costly centralized systems. Many recent studies have shown the utility of cloud computing in data mining, machine learning and knowledge discovery. This workshop intends to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to discuss new and emerging trends in cloud computing technologies, programming models, and software services and outline the data mining and knowledge discovery approaches that can efficiently exploit these modern computing infrastructures. This workshop also seeks to identify the greatest challenges in embracing cloud computing infrastructure for scaling algorithms to petabyte sized datasets. Thus, we invite all researchers, developers, and users to participate in this event and share, contribute, and discuss the emerging challenges in developing data mining and knowledge discovery solutions and frameworks around cloud and distributed computing platforms.

Topics: The major topics of interest to the workshop include but are not limited to:

• Programing models and tools needed for data mining, machine learning, and knowledge discovery
• Scalability and complexity issues
• Security and privacy issues relevant to data mining and knowledge discovery community
• Best use cases: are there a class of data mining algorithms that best suit to cloud and distributed computing platforms
• Performance studies comparing clouds, grids, and clusters
• Performance studies comparing various distributed file systems for data intensive applications
• Customizations and extensions of existing software infrastructures such as Hadoop for streaming, spatial, and spatiotemporal data mining and knowledge discovery
• Applications: Earth science, climate, energy, business, text, web, logs, medical, biology, image and video.

Proceedings: Accepted papers will be included in a ICDM Workshop Proceedings volume, to be published by IEEE Computer Society Press, which will also be included in the IEEE Digital Library.

Paper Submission: This is an open call-for-papers. We invite both full papers (max 8 pages) describing mature work and short papers (max 6 pages) describing work-in-progress or case studies. Only original and high-quality papers conforming to the ICDM 2012 standard guidelines will be considered for this workshop. Postdoctoral Position in Social Network Analysis at UC Irvine

We invite applications for an NIH funded postdoctoral research position in conjunction with the project “Cascades of Network Structure and Function: Pathways to Adolescent Substance Use” with Cynthia Lakon (Assistant Professor, Program in Public Health) and Carter Butts (Associate Professor, Departments of Sociology and Statistics) at the University of California, Irvine.  This postdoctoral position has an expected term of 24-months (with the possibility of extension), conditional on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.  Earliest start date is August 1, 2012; applications will be considered until the position is filled.

This position is funded to carry out research on various aspects of adolescent network structure, social support, and adolescent substance use, including cigarette smoking, cannabis, and alcohol use.  The research work will entail using statistical and agent-based models within a dynamic network setting.  The postdoctoral scholar will be part of a multidisciplinary research team and will work in conjunction with other faculty, student, and postdoctoral researchers at the Center for Networks and Relational Analysis at UC Irvine.  This setting provides extensive opportunities to work both independently and in a team setting with researchers in disciplines ranging from public health and criminology to computer science and statistics.  Formal affiliation with the departments of Public Health, Sociology, or Statistics are  possible, depending on applicant interests and qualifications. 

The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD, or a Masters degree and PhD submitted, at the time of taking up the position; degrees are expected to be in sociology, mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, public health, or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate will also have expertise in social network analysis or a related subject and expertise in one or more of these areas:  scientific computing, agent-based modeling, statistical simulation, or computational statistics.  Applicants with experience using statnet or RSiena are of particular interest.

Types of Paper

The following two types of paper are considered:

* Research papers: these papers should not exceed 12 ACM pages, and will be
selected for inclusion in the programme on the basis of their originality,
significance and rigor.
* Extending Data Base Technology papers: these papers should not exceed 6
pages, and will be selected for inclusion in the programme principally on
the basis of their originality and significance.

The Extending Data Base Technology papers are a new feature for 2013, where
the goal is to enable discussion of visionary ideas, risky approaches or
emerging applications that will require extensions to established
techniques. Both types of paper will receive oral presentations, and there
will also be a poster session to enable fuller discussion of the Extending
Data Base Technology papers.

Additional Activities

EDBT is co-located with the International Conference on Database Theory. In
addition to research papers, the programme includes keynotes, workshops,

We are looking for young and excellent researchers with a strong background in databases and/or data mining. Our goal is to develop a graph database engine which efficiently manage and process social network data. Previous postdocs have published papers in VLDB and SIGMOD under supervision of Professor Wook-Shin Han.

1) Strong implementation skills, 2) excellent communication, and 3) influencing abilities in English are also highly required.

We also welcome postdocs from Korea.

The yearly salary is 30,000,000 Won. (Note that the living expense in Daegu is much cheaper than Seoul.
For example, rental cost for a studio near the university is about 3,000,000 Won for one year.
The cost of one meal is about 3,500 ~ 5,000 Won.) We expect that the position will last for at least one year.

The annual ICDE conference addresses research issues in designing, building,
managing, and evaluating advanced data-intensive systems and applications.
It is a leading forum for researchers, practitioners, developers, and users
to explore cutting-edge ideas and to exchange techniques, tools, and
experiences. We invite the submission of original research contributions and
industrial papers, as well as proposals for workshops, panels, tutorials,
and demonstrations.
ICDE 2013 will be held in Brisbane, Australia, April 8-11, 2013. Brisbane is
the capital city of the state of Queensland. The conference will be held at
the Sofitel Hotel in the center of Brisbane.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
------------------------------------------------
All submissions must be prepared in the IEEE camera-ready format and
submitted to the CMT system at https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/ICDE2013.
Research and industrial paper submissions are limited to 12 pages. A paper
submitted to ICDE 2013 cannot be under review for any other conference or
journal during the entire time it is considered for ICDE 2013, and it must
be substantially different from any previously published work (other than
posters or short papers with a length of up to 4 pages when converted into
the IEEE format). Submissions to the industrial program may be paper-length
or extended abstracts of 1-2 pages. They should present interesting aspects
of commercial products and services and lessons learned from practical
usage, not research results or prototypes from industry labs.

Submissions are reviewed in a single-blind manner. Authors of research
papers will have an opportunity to give concise feedback on preliminary
reviews within a one-week time window.

All accepted papers will appear in the proceedings. The online proceedings
may be published as early as February 1, 2013. Accepted papers will be 12
pages long. The best papers will be selected for extended versions to be
published in the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. IEEE
reserves the right to exclude a paper from distribution after the conference
(e.g., removal from IEEE Xplore) if the authors do not attend the conference
to present their paper.
