LinkedUp Vidi Competition: Linked and Open Data for Education

*Submission deadline 14 February 2014*

Presentations and awards at ESWC 2014
(25-29 May 2014, Crete)

http://linkedup-challenge.org/

The LinkedUp Project launches the second of the LinkedUp Challenge competitions – the Vidi Competition.

The LinkedUp Project aims to push forward the exploitation of the vast amounts of public, open data available on the Web, in particular by educational institutions and organizations.

For Vidi we're inviting you to design and build innovative and robust prototypes and demos for tools that analyse and/or integrate open web data for educational purposes. You can submit your Web application, App, analysis toolkit, documented API or any other tool that connects, exploits or analyses open or linked data and that addresses real educational needs. For Vidi your tool may contain some bugs, as long as it has a stable set of features and you have some proof that it can be deployed on a realistic scale.

This time we also have two focused tracks to run alongside our open track. In these tracks we are asking you to design a solution to the problem we have described.
- *Simplificator* calls for applications easing access to complex information by summarizing them in a simpler form.
- *Pathfinder* requires applications easing access to recommendation and guidance when chosing appropriate curriculum of courses and related resources.

You can find out more about the focused tracks from the LinkedUp Challenge website.

The Vidi competition will run from 4th November 2013 till 14th February 2014. Prizes (up €3,000 for first prize) will be awarded at the European Semantic Web Conference in Crete, Greece in May 2014. That gives you 3 months to get designing and building. You can find out more details about the catalogue of datasets we've collated for you and ideas to get you started on the LinkedUp Challenge website.

So get designing!

The Third International Video Browser Showdown Competition (VBS2014)

Posted on 02:46 by Unknown
Call for Papers for
The Third International Video Browser Showdown Competition (VBS2014)

January 7, 2014, held in conjunction with the 20th International
MultiMedia Modeling Conference (MMM) in Dublin, Ireland

http://www.videobrowsershowdown.org/

The VBS2014 will be a half-day workshop that will take place one day
before MMM2014 at the conference venue of MMM2014 in Dublin, Ireland. Only
the last 45 minutes will be public to the audience and act as a live and
moderated "special demo session" of MMM2014 right before the Welcome
Reception. This new schedule will allow a much more detailed analysis of
the search performance of participating teams as well as different kinds
of search tasks. The evaluation of the results will be published in an own
paper after the workshop.

Test Procedure

In VBS2014 we will use four different search categories:
- Visual KIS in a single video: the moderator presents a short video clip,
randomly selected from a common video file, which has to be found within 3
minutes (the video file will be mentioned).
- Descriptive KIS in a single video: the moderator presents a textual
description about a specific segment, randomly selected from a common
video file, which has to be found within 3 minutes (the video file will be
mentioned).
- Visual KIS in a video archive: the moderator presents a short video
clip, randomly selected from a common collection of ten videos, which has
to be found within 6 minutes.
- Descriptive KIS in a video archive: the moderator presents a textual
description about a specific segment, randomly selected from a common
collection of ten videos, which has to be found within 6 minutes.

Each search category will consist of several Known Item Search (KIS) tasks
that should be solved as fast as possible by interactive search. A
participant may register for only one or even for all four search
categories.

Interactive Search

The videos to be used for the Video Browser Showdown will be provided
without any metadata. However, participants are allowed to perform content
analysis that supports interactive browsing in the video (e.g., through
novel content visualization, content clustering, or advanced seeker-bars
etc.). The search process must be interactive, i.e., no text-queries are
allowed.

Data Set and Search Tasks

The data set will consist of about 30 video files (average duration of 1
hour) and will be made available to accepted participants several weeks
before the competition. These video files will have the following
characteristics: .mp4 file format, MPEG-4 video codec (H.264/AVC), AAC-LC
audio codec, standard-definition resolution. The KIS search tasks will be
presented on-site. The goal of each KIS task is to find a preselected
segment of interest (typically with a duration of 20 seconds) within a
specified time limit by interactive search. The segment of interest
doesn't necessarily start and stop at shot boundaries.

VBS Server

The Video Browser Showdown uses an own server application to evaluate
found segments for correctness. Therefore, all participants will be
connected to the server via a dedicated WiFi network and need to submit
found segments to the server via a simple HTTP-like protocol. The server
is connected to a beamer and presents the current score of all teams in a
live manner.

Participation

Anyone with a video browsing tool that allows for interactive browsing,
exploration, or navigation in a single video file or in video archives may
participate. However, search shouldn't be based on automatic queries.
Examples of tools of interest are: a video shot browser (e.g.,
temporal-based or concept-based), a video player with extended
navigation/interaction means, a video content exploration tool, or tools
using advanced visualizations for improved navigation/interaction (video
surrogates), etc. Tools developed for interactive video search on mobile
devices are of special interest. Moreover, also tools with collaborative
interactive search (e.g., with two users) are allowed.

Submission

To apply for participation please submit a scientific demo paper (2-3
pages in Springer LNCS format) via the MMM2014 submission system at
https://www.conftool.com/mmm2014/ (VBS track) until September 16, 2013.
The submission should include a detailed description of the video browsing
tool and how it supports interactive search in video. Submissions will be
peer-reviewed to ensure maximum quality. Accepted submissions will be
published in the conference proceedings of MMM 2014.

Important Dates

Demo paper submission deadline: September 16, 2013
Notification of acceptance: September 30, 2013
Camera-ready paper due: October 16, 2013
Author registration deadline: October 16, 2013

Call for Presentations – RecSysChallenge 2012 Workshop of the Recommender
Systems Challenge

in conjunction with ACM Recommender Systems 2012

Dublin, Ireland, 13 September 2012

http://www.recsyschallenge.com

*** Extended abstract (2-4 pages) submission deadline: 20 August 2012 ***
*** Accepted presentations to be invited to post-proceedings volume on data-oriented RecSys Challenges ***

The Recommender Systems Challenge of ACM RecSys 2012 (RecSysChallenge 2012)
will take place as a full-day workshop on Thursday September 13th and will
run as an interactive event during which participants will be guided through
the whole process of participating in such a data-oriented contest.

Taking as examples the datasets that drove the contest of this year's
challenge (with data from the Moviepilot and Mendeley platforms), we want to
present, discuss and reflect on all the important steps of developing,
testing and deploying recommendation algorithms over a real-life dataset. It
will start from the way a dataset may be acquired and processed, explore how
an evaluation that will produce results comparable and reproducable by
others may be performed, and close with a discussion on how novel
recommendation approaches can reach final deployment in commercial
applications.

Confirmed speakers include contributors to recommender systems' frameworks
such as Lenskit, Mahout and MyMediaLite; recommender system technology
companies such as Gravity R&D; as well as chief technology officers from
real-life platforms like the Moviepilot and Mendeley ones.

We invite interested researchers and developers to share their experience of
working with a dataset in the context of the RecSysChallenge and report on
their succesful or unsuccesful efforts. Contributions can be related to any
stage of the participation to the challenge. We are particularly interested
to hearing from groups that have gained access to this year's datasets from
Moviepilots and Mendeley but have faced difficulties in developing a
complete and competitive contribution to the RecSysChallenge.

The Recommender Systems Challenge (RecSysChallenge 2012) @ ACM RecSys

Posted on 05:07 by Unknown

1st Call for Papers
RecSysChallenge 2012 The Recommender Systems Challenge

in conjunction with ACM Recommender Systems 2012

Dublin, Ireland, 13 September 2012

http://www.recsyschallenge.com

*** Submission deadline: 8 June 2012 ***

As in other research areas, the availability of data sets in recommender systems can be considered as key for research and application purposes.
These data sets serve as benchmarks to develop new algorithms and to compare them to other algorithms in given settings.
Furthermore, they can be used for experimenting with new recommendation methods, services, as well as added-value services related to recommendation (such as supporting visualisation and argumentation).

The Recommender System Challenge, in conjunction with ACM RecSys 2012, invites participants to work on two tracks with real-world datasets.

Benchmarking Track: Context-Aware Movie Recommendation (CAMRa'12)

This track focuses on contextual recommendation of movie-related news and uses a data set from moviepilot.com The aim is to measure classification accuracy metrics when trying to find the right users to recommend certain items in order to gain a large impact in social networks.
It asks participants to use and evaluate their approaches in an off-line manner, but in addition an on-line evaluation will be performed in the final stages of the challenge.
The track is following the previous Challenges on Context-Aware Movie Recommendation that took place in 2010 and 2011.

URL: http://www.recsyschallenge.com/tracks/camra/

Exploratory Track: Scientific Paper Recommendation (ScienceRec'12)

This track focuses on recommendations to users about scientific papers that they might be interested in, using a data set that comes from the Mendeley system (www.mendeley.com).
The aim is to share recommendation approaches and discuss issues like the types of scientific recommendation services that social research platforms like Mendeley could implement or the types of data sets that could help advance research around scientific paper recommendation.
It asks participants to use and evaluate their approaches in an off-line manner, but is also interested in proposals for relevant services, navigational interfaces, visualisations of recommendations etc. Thus it welcomes submissions that will combine the data set with the Mendeley API (http://dev.mendeley.com).
The track is following the publication of the Mendeley data set
(http://dev.mendeley.com/datachallenge/) after the 1st DataTEL challenge that took place within the 2010 Recommender Systems in Technology Enhanced Learning Workshop (RecSysTEL).

URL: http://www.recsyschallenge.com/tracks/sciencerec/

Submission

Two submission types are accepted: full papers of up to 8 pages, and short papers up to 4 pages.
Each paper will be directed to the relevant track and will be evaluated by at least three reviewers from the track's Programme Committee.
The papers will be evaluated for their originality, contribution significance, soundness, clarity, and overall quality.
