Job Opening on Large-Scale Data Management in Sensor-rich environments, Bielefeld, Germany

Postdoctoral/Doctoral position in "Large-scale stream data management and machine learning in sensor-rich environments" at the Cognitive Interaction Technology Center of Excellence, Bielefeld
The Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology [1] at Bielefeld University, Germany has an open position in the area of large-scale stream data management and machine learning in sensor-rich environments.


In order to exploit the proliferating sensor information available in today's intelligent systems such as mobile robots and to scale up the application of learning algorithms, efficient management of streaming and stateful system data is an important challenge. The goal of the project is to develop novel memory architectures that allow to efficiently store, index, and query sensorial in addition to symbolic data extracted from real-time data streams or processed and managed by higher-level components targeting learning and human-machine interaction tasks.
The successful candidate will work together with a group of scientists on developing novel solutions in the context of intelligent smart homes and robotics that learn to adapt their behaviour to users and situations. For this, a scalable data management and memory infrastructure is needed. The candidate will contribute to the development of this infrastructure, building on mature large-scale data management and storage solutions, in particular NoSQL or graph databases, and develop novel solutions for the use cases and requirements of the project on top of existing solutions. A particular challenge will be to develop a software architecture that is highly available targeting 24/7 operation, while at the same time supporting real-time application running in a smart environment. Example challenges and tasks to be tackled include the following ones:


* develop data management solutions that scale to rapid and huge data streams
* develop flexible data structures that allow to move between different layers of representational granularity with recent data having the highest granularity
* develop synopsis and summary data structures for the data stream in order to support answering frequent queries
* efficient implementation of distance measures for approximate querying
* develop data structures and models that can model the relations between different representations stored in memory, allowing to query/filter by relations




This position is particularly suitable for candidates interested in working with Big Data in the context of embodied intelligent systems for human-machine interaction and willing to acquire the skills necessary to work on real-time processing of large data streams.


The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in at least three of the following areas:


- Data Modelling & Data Management
- Stream Data Management (load shedding, window-based computation, )
- Relational or Graph Databases
- NoSQL databases (e.g. HBASE, RIAK, MongoDB, ...)
- Large-scale Machine Learning and Data Mining
- Sensor Networks

Candidates with expertise in several topics will be given preference. Applicants are expected to have strong programming skills, the ability to work independently, strong interpersonal skills as well as strong English language skills. Candidates should be qualified for and willing to perform state-of-the-art research. Knowledge of German is not required.


CITEC is a leading centre in the area of cognitive and intelligent systems, spanning more than 40 PIs with their research groups and spanning at least five disciplines (Computer Science, Linguistics, Psychology, Biology and Sport Science) at Bielefeld University [2]. Candidates are expected to be interested in interdisciplinary and group work.


CITEC provides the chance to perform cutting-edge research in an international context. Applicants for a postdoc position will have the chance to perform independent research on the topics of the group that qualifies them for an academic career and allows them to position themselves as independent researchers in the community. PhD applicants will receive supervision and support in developing the necessary skills to produce high-quality research necessary to earn a PhD Degree. The salary for both PhD and postdoc positions is around 3.300 Euro per month (pre taxes), according to scale TV-L E 13 in the German University System and can vary depending on age, marital status, tax class etc. The salary increases with the duration of the employment. precisely address the related research and technological challenges incurred

The Edinburgh Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Science is
now inviting applications for 10 fully-funded PhD studentships, to
start in September 2014. Students with a strong background in computer
science, mathematics, physics, or engineering are particularly

The CDT focuses on the computational principles, methods, and systems
for extracting knowledge from data. Large data sets are now generated
by almost every activity in science, society, and commerce - ranging
from molecular biology to social media, from sustainable energy to
health care. Data science asks: How can we efficiently find patterns
in these vast streams of data?  Many research areas have tackled parts
of this problem: machine learning focuses on finding patterns and
making predictions from data; ideas from algorithms and databases are
required to build systems that scale to big data streams; and separate
research areas have grown around different types of unstructured data
such as text, images, sensor data, video, and speech.  Recently, these
distinct disciplines have begun to converge into a single field called
data science.

The CDT is a 4-year programme: the first year provides Masters level
training in the core areas of data science, along with a significant
project. In years 2-4 students will carry out PhD research in Data
Science, guided by PhD supervisors from within the centre. The CDT is
funded by EPSRC and the University of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has a large, world-class research community in data science
to support the work of the CDT student cohort.  The city of Edinburgh
has often been voted the 'best place to live in Britain', and has many
exciting cultural and student activities.

Real time analytics of social, semantic and linked data

The widespread use of the social web and mobile devices and the availability of large collaboratively-maintained, multi-domain knowledge sources such as Wikipedia and DBpedia have created the potential to consolidate and link data from several sources into enormous heterogeneous networked data sets consisting of nodes and edges with inherent semantic meaning, interdependence and provenance.

While graph analytics and processing frameworks generally consider generic edges and nodes, we plan to address the challenges in the analysis of large heterogeneous information networks – influence measurement, information propagation, similarity calculation and clustering, structural role analysis, the detection of dependent concepts and latent relationships, real time analytics, the use and extraction of network schemas, and approaches for user-guided querying due to the additional complexity of the network space.

In parallel, we will address techniques to consolidate various sources of social semantic data, and to improve the quality of user-generated content through techniques such as gamification and the identification of authoritative users in crowdsourcing efforts.

The research will be applied in the following domains (amongst others)

* Novel scientometrics based on analysis of social media and Web data
* Real time social media analytics for large customer support centres
* Real time recommendation of knowledge/related topics for media outlets with large archives
* Social media analytics to identify influential users and their behaviours in the domain of digital media broadcasting

Some of the core challenges will be :

JOB DESCRIPTION

The candidate will participate in the "Virtual eCoaching and Storytelling
technology for post-traumatic stress disorder treatment (VESP)" project,
which studies how effective a stand-alone, multi-modal memory
restructuring
(3MR) system and an Internet-based, guided self-therapy system could be
used for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients.
The main goal of this PhD project is to investigate how a storytelling
framework could use declarative and semantic methods for enabling patients
to easily re-create an experience via a virtual environment for
therapeutic
purposes. Among other tasks, the PhD student will investigate (1) desired
object semantics and associations for virtual reality exposure therapy
(VRET) environments, (2) how to integrate procedural techniques and
non-intrusive interactive methods, and (3) methods to support the
declarative creation of scenarios and their consistency maintenance.
The project will combine new techniques with existing, in-house algorithms
and systems, e.g. procedural methods, solvers, and libraries. Within the
VESP team, the candidate will work closely together with two other PhD
students, who will respectively (1) investigate how to establish a virtual
coach that assists in the treatment execution, and (2) design and conduct
two Randomized Controlled Trials to evaluate the efficacy of PTSD
treatment
systems.   


REQUIREMENTS

You have a university MSc degree in computer science, human-computer
interaction or a related area, with excellent grades. Experience with
computer graphics and game technology is a plus. You have excellent
programming skills in languages such as C#, C++ and Python, and have a

We offer a 4-year full-time PhD research position in the WiBAF project (Within-Browser Adaptation Framework) situated on the crossroads of the Adaptive Hypermedia, Data Mining and User Modeling areas. The project is funded by the Data Science research center of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Netherlands.
The research will be conducted at the Information Systems Group, Department of Computer Science.

RESEARCH PROJECT AND TASK DESCRIPTION
Personalized information systems will undergo dramatic changes in the near future, caused in part by rising privacy concerns (and
legislation) and in part by the need to distribute the computation involved in generating recommendations and performing adaptation.

In Web-based information systems data mining techniques are applied to model user intent, preferences or current context and thus facilitate data-driven personalization. Such data-driven user modeling has been heavily used already in recommender systems that employ content-based and collaborative filtering, and in search engines with personalized or context-aware ranking of organic search results or ad placement.
In the area of personalization and adaptation of content, interaction and navigation, with applications in e.g. e-learning and e-culture, either hand-crafted adaptation rules or semantically rich databases have been used as the basis for deciding how to perform personalization.

The main objective for the PhD student in WiBAF project is to investigate how to bring these two currently distinct and to a large extent isolated approaches to personalization, i.e. purely hand-crafted and purely data-driven, together to perform within-site or even within-page adaptation based on both the analysis of user behavior and background knowledge of a certain domain.

One of the concrete targets is defining, studying and implementing a complete framework including a generic language for expressing adaptation and for generating client-side code that performs this within-browser adaptation, based on local client-side user model and global adaptation knowledge available at the server-side.

The framework should enable meta-adaptation which continuously adapts (updates) the adaptation process as user behavior changes.
This makes use of research into the topics of explore-exploit trade-off in adaptive information systems like recommenders, context-awareness and recurrent concept drift in data mining.

It is expected that the PhD candidate will be involved in the complete R&D cycles including theory, framework and techniques development; implementation of the software prototypes; and experimentation with real use cases that are facilitated by the industrial collaborator - Digital Innovations Lab of the Web analytics company Adversitement B.V.

PROFILE
We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a Master degree in Computer Science or other related disciplines.
(Candidates expecting to graduate by August 2013 are also eligible to apply.) You are expected to have good knowledge and at least some experience in one or more of the following areas:

The Database Systems and Information Management Group (DIMA) at Technische

"big data analytics", for an initial funding period of one year, with the
option for extension for up to another three years upon successful renewal
of the Stratosphere project (www.stratosphere.eu), which will be decided
in July 2013.

The goal of Stratosphere is to jointly with researchers at other
institutions in Berlin, Europe, and worldwide conduct research and build
a large-scale data processor for executing complex data analysis programs
on huge, heterogeneous, high-velocity data sets. We plan to conduct
research that will lay the foundation for automatic optimization and
processing of stateful and iterative data analysis programs in a massively
parallel, fault-tolerant way. We will be researching a data programming
model based on functional programming, bringing together compiler
technology (Java, Scala, JVM) and parallel database systems and query
optimization. We will be looking at real-world use-cases in the area of
machine learning, information extraction, and data profiling. Our work
will be made available open-source. We intend to evaluate our research
jointly with other research institutions and companies in real-world
application settings.


Requirements:
Applicants should have completed a PhD in database systems, and have the
zeal to work in a leading research environment at the forefront of
technology innovation, interested in building systems and putting research
results into practical use. Ideally you have specialized in the area of
query processing or optimization, during your PhD, with additional skills
in programming languages and compilers, distributed systems, programming
languages design, parallel programming, or benchmarking and system
evaluation, documented by a strong publication record. A good knowledge of
Hadoop internals, the map/reduce programming model, as well as parallel

Three postdoc positions in social data management @ University of Bologna, Italy

We invite applications for three post-doctoral researcher positions in social data management on project IMPACT (http://impact.cs.unibo.it), funded by the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research. The positions are at the Department of Computer Science, University of Bologna, Italy (http://www.informatica.unibo.it).

All three positions are for 12+12 months (the contract can be renewed after the first year by mutual agreement). Annual gross salary will be around 23.000 Euro  (please, notice that the amount is tax free (IRPEF exempt) and includes social security). Expected starting date: September 2013 (flexible). The main goal of the IMPACT research program is to develop methodologies and algorithms to store and efficiently retrieve information from Social Network Sites and to identify relevant structural and communication patterns.
