The European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL) is a unique
opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to address
current challenges and advances in the field. Through EC-TEL, established
and emerging researchers as well as practitioners, entrepreneurs, and
technology developers explore new collaborations, strengthen networks, and
compliment their core experience.

There is no doubt that Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) has created
enormous changes in schools, universities and at the workplaces. However,
these innovations have tended to be unsustainable. Too often, initiatives
need a high degree of effort to be sustained, and are consequently
endangered when funding stops. At the same time, mobile and social
information and communication technologies are fundamentally changing our
lives. Nowadays we use them naturally to keep in contact with our friends,
to seek information, to buy things and to work. In many domains, these
emerging technologies demonstrate that scaling is possible. But few
educational institutions or companies have taken these technologies up in a
systematic way to include them into their learning strategy.

To address these challenges the theme of EC-TEL 2013 is "Scaling up learning
for sustained impact".

In this spirit, we want to offer you a chance to present existing prototypes
and work in progress to ECTEL community to create sustained impact,
dissemination and create potentials for scaling up the use to a wider
audience.
Extended demonstrations of prototypes and "TEL in action" will spark
discussions between different but complimentary groups, and be animated and
disseminated through live internet radio broadcasts, videos, etc. EC-TEL
2013 will examine and improve the transitions between research, practice and
industry.

In this special call we invite contributions for demonstrations and posters
that can be exhibited and discussed along the conference. Details of
conference topics are available at http://ec-tel.eu/, and in this second
call especially we encourage highly visual and engaging demos, such as
Serious Games, Virtual Worlds, Immersive Multimedia, and Collaborative
Learning Systems.

Posters report on significant work in progress. We will have an interactive
poster session in which you can present your work and elicit feedback from
EC-TEL participants.

A demonstration is your chance to fully engage EC-TEL attendees at a
personal level by letting them see, touch, squeeze, or hear your visions for
the future of TEL, or demonstrate highly interactive "TEL in Action"
(e.g. through videos or real-time learning experiences).

We expect that your Demonstration will be a reliably running prototype of
your vision that is ready to be tried out, questioned and interacted with.
You need to submit a concise description of your prototype, clearly showing
how your technological innovation realises a clear learning innovation.
Please also indicate any special technical requirements needed for the
demonstration at the conference location.

At the conference, all accepted demonstrations will be invited to
participate in the "EC-TEL 2013 Demo sprint contest". The audience of the
"EC-TEL 2013 Demo sprint contest" will vote for the best EC-TEL
demonstration in this session and the winner will be awarded with a prize
from Online Educa Berlin Conference (see below).

The first prize for the demo sprint contest is sponsored by ONLINE EDUCA
BERLIN 2013 and consists of:

The International Learning Analytics & Knowledge Conference, now in its third year, is a venue for reporting research at the nexus of two emerging societal phenomena. First we are witnessing the rapid expansion of the use of technologies to support learning, not only in established institutional contexts and platforms, but also in the emerging landscape of free, open, social learning online. Second, the unprecedented availability of data that learners generate in the process of accessing learning materials, interacting with educators and peers, and creating new content in these technological settings, coupled with advances in analytics and data mining, knowledge modeling and representation and open data offer great potential for research into how learning takes place in socio-technical settings and the development of new forms of analytics that can inform learners and educators. Learning Analytics research brings these technical, pedagogical, and social domains into dialogue with each other to ensure that interventions and organizational systems serve the needs of all stakeholders.

GENERAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION

THEME: Dialectics in Learning Analytics 

The first two conferences have established the range of issues and approaches of concern in leveraging the availability of data about learning with powerful computational, representational and visualization techniques. This third conference is designed to consolidate the field by bringing these many voices into dialogue in a "middle space" under the overarching theme of "Dialectics in Learning Analytics", which has these facets: 

The Middle Space: The conference will explore the middle space within which Learning and Analytics intersect, and seeks proposals for papers and events that explicitly connect analytic tools to theoretical and practical aspects of understanding and managing learning. 

Productive Multivocality: Learning analytics is multidisciplinary, drawing on theories and methods from diverse research traditions. Our community includes educators, learning scientists, computer scientists, administrators, and policy makers, among others. The middle space serves as a topical "boundary object", enabling productive discourse between these many voices. 

The Old and the New: We are facing a centuries old problem: to improve learning, but we are trying to solve it using a new set of tools, not available before. We address these problems in the city of Leuven: centuries old, lively new.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the premier annual event on research and applications of recommendation technologies, the Seventh ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2013). The conference will be held on October 12-16, 2013, Hong Kong, China. Previous conferences have been distinguished by a strong level of interaction between researchers and practitioners in the sharing of ideas, problems and solutions, and the 2013 conference will continue in this tradition. The fully-refereed proceedings will be published by the ACM and, like past RecSys proceedings, are expected to be widely read and cited.

All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically in PDF format. RecSys 2013 submissions should be prepared according to the standard ACM SIG proceedings format. For your convenience, we provide paper templates in Microsoft Word and LaTeX on the conference website. There are two paper submission categories:

Long paper submissions should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. The maximum length is 8 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format. Each accepted long paper will be presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference program. We expect the review process to be highly selective: in 2012, the acceptance rate for full papers was 20%.

Short paper submissions typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. The maximum length is 4 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format. Each accepted short paper will be presented in a poster session. The presentation may include a system demonstration.

Note: Please note that rejected long paper submissions will not be automatically considered as short papers.

The Recommender Systems Challenge of ACM RecSys 2012 (RecSysChallenge 2012)
will take place as a full-day workshop on Thursday September 13th and will
run as an interactive event during which participants will be guided through
the whole process of participating in such a data-oriented contest.

Taking as examples the datasets that drove the contest of this year's
challenge (with data from the Moviepilot and Mendeley platforms), we want to
present, discuss and reflect on all the important steps of developing,
testing and deploying recommendation algorithms over a real-life dataset. It
will start from the way a dataset may be acquired and processed, explore how
an evaluation that will produce results comparable and reproducable by
others may be performed, and close with a discussion on how novel
recommendation approaches can reach final deployment in commercial
applications.

Confirmed speakers include contributors to recommender systems' frameworks
such as Lenskit, Mahout and MyMediaLite; recommender system technology
companies such as Gravity R&D; as well as chief technology officers from
real-life platforms like the Moviepilot and Mendeley ones.

We invite interested researchers and developers to share their experience of
working with a dataset in the context of the RecSysChallenge and report on
their succesful or unsuccesful efforts. Contributions can be related to any
stage of the participation to the challenge. We are particularly interested
to hearing from groups that have gained access to this year's datasets from
Moviepilots and Mendeley but have faced difficulties in developing a
complete and competitive contribution to the RecSysChallenge.

Group 2012 seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from
different areas working on the development, introduction, management,
deployment, and analysis of computer-based collaborative systems. We
particularly encourage submissions and participation from industry.

Posters and demos are an opportunity to present late-breaking and
preliminary results, smaller results not suitable for a Paper or a Note
submission, innovative ideas not yet validated through user studies, student
research, and other research best presented in this open format. Posters and
demos will be displayed at a special session in the conference when poster
and demo authors will be available to discuss their work.

Accepted poster and demos will be published in the ACM Digital Library
Extended Abstracts.

POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Poster submissions should include an extended abstract no longer than 4
pages, including all figures and references, in Extended Abstract format
(http://chi2012.acm.org/cfp-formatting-instructions.shtml). This extended
abstract will be published in the ACM Digital Library as part of the
Conference Extended Abstracts. In addition, submissions should also include
a separate Tabloid sized draft of the poster for review purposes. A Tabloid
is an 11 × 17 inches format. Please submit the 4-page paper in PDF format
and name this file ContactAuthorsLastName.pdf. Both the extended abstract
and the poster draft should include author names (these are not anonymous
submissions).

Poster submissions should be e-mailed to the Poster Co-Chairs at
posters@group2012.org. All attachments must be less than 5MB. If your poster
draft is over 5MB, please email the co-chairs with your 4-page extended
abstract attached, and a URL from where the poster draft can be downloaded.
Any questions regarding this process or from complications due to large
files can be directed to posters@group2012.org. All submissions must be
received by the chairs by July 1, 2012 at 24.00 PDT. Submissions received
after this date/time will not be considered. All submissions will be
acknowledged by email. All questions should be directed to

DEMO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Group 2012 demonstrations present implementations of new CSCW systems and
concepts. The peer-reviewed demonstrations allow conference participants to
view novel and noteworthy CSCW systems in action, discuss the systems with
those who created them, and try them out. Appropriate demonstrations include
applications, technologies, and research prototypes, and may include work
that has been previously published at CSCW or elsewhere. Demonstrations can
also serve to showcase novel commercial products not previously described in
the research literature. Demonstrations should be interactive and provide
attendees a hands-on experience. The demo forum is not an opportunity for
marketing or sales presentations. Presenters must have been directly
involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the
unique and novel contributions of the system.

The demo system summary is a two page description of the demo and the
required setup in Extended Abstract format
(http://chi2012.acm.org/cfp-formatting-instructions.shtml). This extended
abstract will be published in the ACM Digital Library as part of the
Conference Extended Abstracts. It provides information about the
presenter(s), including their relationship to the project. It also provides
a detailed description of needed space, equipment support, Internet
connectivity, and any other related requirements.
