The Third International Video Browser Showdown Competition (VBS2014)

Posted on 02:46 by Unknown
Call for Papers for
The Third International Video Browser Showdown Competition (VBS2014)

January 7, 2014, held in conjunction with the 20th International
MultiMedia Modeling Conference (MMM) in Dublin, Ireland

http://www.videobrowsershowdown.org/

The VBS2014 will be a half-day workshop that will take place one day
before MMM2014 at the conference venue of MMM2014 in Dublin, Ireland. Only
the last 45 minutes will be public to the audience and act as a live and
moderated "special demo session" of MMM2014 right before the Welcome
Reception. This new schedule will allow a much more detailed analysis of
the search performance of participating teams as well as different kinds
of search tasks. The evaluation of the results will be published in an own
paper after the workshop.

Test Procedure

In VBS2014 we will use four different search categories:
- Visual KIS in a single video: the moderator presents a short video clip,
randomly selected from a common video file, which has to be found within 3
minutes (the video file will be mentioned).
- Descriptive KIS in a single video: the moderator presents a textual
description about a specific segment, randomly selected from a common
video file, which has to be found within 3 minutes (the video file will be
mentioned).
- Visual KIS in a video archive: the moderator presents a short video
clip, randomly selected from a common collection of ten videos, which has
to be found within 6 minutes.
- Descriptive KIS in a video archive: the moderator presents a textual
description about a specific segment, randomly selected from a common
collection of ten videos, which has to be found within 6 minutes.

Each search category will consist of several Known Item Search (KIS) tasks
that should be solved as fast as possible by interactive search. A
participant may register for only one or even for all four search
categories.

Interactive Search

The videos to be used for the Video Browser Showdown will be provided
without any metadata. However, participants are allowed to perform content
analysis that supports interactive browsing in the video (e.g., through
novel content visualization, content clustering, or advanced seeker-bars
etc.). The search process must be interactive, i.e., no text-queries are
allowed.

Data Set and Search Tasks

The data set will consist of about 30 video files (average duration of 1
hour) and will be made available to accepted participants several weeks
before the competition. These video files will have the following
characteristics: .mp4 file format, MPEG-4 video codec (H.264/AVC), AAC-LC
audio codec, standard-definition resolution. The KIS search tasks will be
presented on-site. The goal of each KIS task is to find a preselected
segment of interest (typically with a duration of 20 seconds) within a
specified time limit by interactive search. The segment of interest
doesn't necessarily start and stop at shot boundaries.

VBS Server

The Video Browser Showdown uses an own server application to evaluate
found segments for correctness. Therefore, all participants will be
connected to the server via a dedicated WiFi network and need to submit
found segments to the server via a simple HTTP-like protocol. The server
is connected to a beamer and presents the current score of all teams in a
live manner.

Participation

Anyone with a video browsing tool that allows for interactive browsing,
exploration, or navigation in a single video file or in video archives may
participate. However, search shouldn't be based on automatic queries.
Examples of tools of interest are: a video shot browser (e.g.,
temporal-based or concept-based), a video player with extended
navigation/interaction means, a video content exploration tool, or tools
using advanced visualizations for improved navigation/interaction (video
surrogates), etc. Tools developed for interactive video search on mobile
devices are of special interest. Moreover, also tools with collaborative
interactive search (e.g., with two users) are allowed.

Submission

To apply for participation please submit a scientific demo paper (2-3
pages in Springer LNCS format) via the MMM2014 submission system at
https://www.conftool.com/mmm2014/ (VBS track) until September 16, 2013.
The submission should include a detailed description of the video browsing
tool and how it supports interactive search in video. Submissions will be
peer-reviewed to ensure maximum quality. Accepted submissions will be
published in the conference proceedings of MMM 2014.

Important Dates

Demo paper submission deadline: September 16, 2013
Notification of acceptance: September 30, 2013

Special Issue on Smart Media-Optimized Applications in the Cloud - Springer Computing Journal

Posted on 02:37 by Unknown

Computing Journal

Publisher: Springer
Guest Editors: Rajiv Ranjan, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Lizhe Wang

*** Call for Papers ***

CISCO (a network technology giant) predicts that by 2016, 90% of internet traffic will be multimedia content (3D images, high resolution video, and audio). In addition to entertainment and advertising applications, the new multimedia content-driven applications in the domain of healthcare, aged-care, surveillance, and education will contribute significantly to this traffic. The new applications? contribution to the traffic will be due to their unprecedented processing (storage, distribution, and indexing) requirements for hundreds of petabytes of content. In the healthcare domain, live as well as archived videos will be used as a medium to educate patients about the aftercare treatment (follow-ups), once the patient is at home. This will include video instructions about how to change the dressing on a healing wound or how to brush their teeth after having braces installed. Other scenario from healthcare domain will arise from the problem of managing petabytes of multimedia content produced by advanced medical imaging devices. In the aged-care domain, health professional will rely on real-time or recorded video feeds from patient?s home to monitor clinical signs and indicators such as skin color, mood, affect, and to determine whether a patient is utilizing devices and medications appropriately. In the surveillance domain, governments, small businesses, and individuals will need to deal with stream of video content from security cameras and perform analytics (event detection, event tracking, and alert generation) on-the-fly for protecting citizens, homes and nations? critical infrastructures. Finally, in the education domain, students will need to have the opportunity to access teachers from home; especially, the students in rural or remote areas need an opportunity to be able to receive interactive lessons or instructions via live video streaming, from specialised teachers or trainers who are not available locally.

In the aforementioned application scenarios: (i) hundreds of petabytes of multimedia content will be generated in real-time as well as offline which will be required to be efficiently processed (stored, distributed, and indexed with a schema and semantics) in a way that does not compromise end-users? Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of content availability, content search delay, content analysis delay, and the like and (ii) the information retrieved from content will be consumed and processed in many places concurrently and collaboratively. Many of the existing ICT (Information and Communication Technology) infrastructures that store, distribute, and index hundreds of petabytes of multimedia content fall short of this challenge or do not exist. Hence, we need more powerful and fast ICT infrastructures that can support scalable storage, indexing, and distribution of petabytes of multimedia content produced by aforementioned applications.

We believe that Cloud computing infrastructures (e.g., Amazon, Microsoft Azure, etc.) in conjunction with fast communication infrastructure will emerge as the platform for hosting and delivering aforementioned multimedia-content driven applications. Cloud computing assembles large networks of virtualised ICT services such as hardware resources (such as CPU, storage, and network), software resources (such as databases, application servers, and web servers) and applications. Cloud computing services are hosted in large data centres, often referred to as data farms, operated by companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsof Azure. In industry these services are referred to as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Cloud computing gives multimedia application developers the ability to marshal virtually infinite resources with an option to pay-per-use and as needed, instead of requiring upfront investments in resources that may never be optimally used. Once multimedia applications are hosted on cloud infrastructures, users are able to access them from anywhere at any time, using devices ranging from smartphones to desktop computers. While Cloud computing optimises the use of resources, it does not (yet) provide an effective solution hosting multimedia content-driven applications which has to process tsunami (often in real-time) of content from heterogeneous sources such as surveillance camera, medical imaging devices, etc.

Developing a software tools and technologies that can support end-to-end lifecycle operations of different multimedia content-driven applications on Cloud infrastructures (while ensuring the QoS targets) remains a challenging research problem. This challenge mainly arises from the uncertainty posed by application workloads (streaming vs. static content), resources capacity demands (e.g., bandwidth, memory, storage, and processors), failures (e.g., failure of a network link), access patterns (e.g., number of end-users and location), different device types (e.g., mobile phone, laptop, and smart TV), indexing needs (e.g., text and content based), and different network types (e.g. wired and wireless).

TopicsNovel software tools, techniques, and technologies for delivering smart media-optimized applications in the CLOUD, but not limited to:

- Cloud-based petabyte multimedia content storage tools and indexing algorithms
- Techniques for petabyte efficient non-SQL indexing of multimedia content
- Statistical multimedia application workload estimation and related cloud service optimization
- Network QoS aware provisioning of multimedia applications
- Techniques for provisioning multimedia applications in collaborative environments
- Autonomic techniques for provisioning cloud services to multimedia applications
- Techniques for content personalization and adaptation
- Innovative application case study from healthcare, aged care, surveillance, and education domains

CIKM'13 Workshop - Sixth Workshop on Exploiting Semantic Annotations for Information Retrieval (ESAIR'13)

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown

Call for Papers
Sixth Workshop on
Exploiting Semantic Annotations for Information Retrieval (ESAIR'13)

CIKM 2013, October 28, San Francisco
http://staff.science.uva.nl/~kamps/esair13/

Submissions due: June 21

There is an increasing amount of structure on the Web as a result of modern
Web languages, micro-formats and linked data, user tagging and annotation,
and emerging robust NLP tools. These meaningful, semantic, annotations hold
the promise to significantly enhance information access, by increasing the
depth of analysis of today's systems. Currently, we have only started
exploring the possibilities and only begin to understand how these valuable
semantic cues can be put to fruitful use. To complicate matters, standard
text search excels at shallow information needs expressed by short keyword
queries, and here semantic annotation contributes very little, if anything.

The main questions for the workshop are: How to make use of the currently
emerging knowledge resources (such as DBpedia, Freebase) as underlying
semantic model giving access to an unprecedented scope and detail of factual
information? How to include annotations beyond the topical dimension (think
of reading level, prerequisite level, content credibility, transaction
trustworthiness, freshness, genre, sentiment, etc) that contain vital cues
for matching the specific needs and profile of the searcher at hand?

* Many Open Questions

The Workshop will bring together researchers working with semantic
annotations, its use cases, its sources (authoring to NLP tools), its users,
and its use in DB, IR, KM, or Web research, and work together on a range of
open questions:

Application/Use Case: What are use cases that make obvious the need for
semantic annotation of information? What tasks cannot be solved by document
retrieval using the traditional bag-of-words? What is keeping searchers from
exploring these powerful search request? What impact has the web of data
with more and more information in preprocessed form?

- Annotations: What types of annotation are available? Are there crucial
differences between author-, software-, user-, and machine-generated
annotations? Do we annotate types/classes/categories ("person") or instances
("Albert Einstein")? How similar or different are linked data and annotated
text? What are the limitations of the current annotations schemes, and how
to overcome them?

- Rich Context: Do we annotate text? Or also search requests and
interactions, and their broader context? Besides personalization and
geo-positional information, mobiles have a wide and growing range of
locational, mechanical and even biometrical sensor data available to them.
Can kick-start the query by inferring task and situational context in the
mobile use case?

- (Un)certainty: How should we interpret the annotations? Can we reliably
link textual annotations to known entity catalogs? Can expect a messy world
to be captured in a clean set of meaningful categories? Or is all
information fundamentally uncertain and only partly known? How can we
fruitfully combine information retrieval and semantic web approaches?

These and other related questions will be discussed at this open format
workshop -- the aim is to provide paths for further research to change the
way we understand information access today!

* We Need Your Help!

Help us shape the future of information access by increasing the depth of
analysis of today's systems:

- Submit a short 2+1-page research or position paper explaining your key
wishes or key points,

- and take actively part in the discussion at the Workshop.

What's a 2+1 page paper? We like short and focused contributions
highlighting your main point, claim, observation, finding, experiment,
project, etc, (roughly 2 pages of mainly text) but we also like clear
tables, graphs, and full citations (that's the "+1" page). So your
submission can up three pages, as long as max. 2 of them are narrative text.

The deadline is Friday June 21, 2013, further submission details are on
http://staff.science.uva.nl/~kamps/esair13/

We are looking forward to a productive, stimulating and fruitful workshop
day in the tradition of previous ESAIR workshops -- come join the
discussion!

Abstract—Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) enables overlays of semantically-enriched multimedia on video streams of smart phone cameras. These new ways to interact with digital objects via position and 3D movement can be helpful for on-site professional communities. However, current MAR applications lack real-time collaborative features. Moreover, blending multimedia semantics in collaborative MAR is still challenging. In this paper, we present a mobile real-time semantic multimedia-based collaborative system with augmented reality features based on open standards like XMPP and MPEG-7. The prototype system is evaluated in the digital documentation of historical sites for cultural heritage management. The evaluation results indicate increased productivity and awareness within on-site professional communities.

Our second presentation will come in a later post.

New Book on the Frontiers of Multimedia Information Retrieval

Posted on 01:13 by Unknown
This is the new book of my colleague Horst Eidenberger. I collaborated with him in several workshops of our multimedia metadata group. It is on the frontiers of machine intelligence for multimedia understanding.

Frontiers of Media Understanding: The Common Methods of Audio Retrieval, Biosignal Processing, Content-Based Image Retrieval, Face Recognition, Music Classification, Speech Recognition, Text Retrieval and Video Surveillance

Author
Horst Eidenberger
Vienna University of Technology
http://www.ims.tuwien.ac.at/hme/

Abstract

Media understanding is the science/art of identifying semantic structures in digital media objects such as audio, biosignals, images, text and videos. This volume ends the work started in "Fundamental Media Understanding" and continued in "Professional Media Understanding" (atpress, 2011/12). It investigates the scientific frontiers of multimedia information retrieval. Soft frontier areas such as the influence of media theory and psychophysical research are considered as well as core topics such as semantic template matching, Kalman filtering, the limits of learning, dynamic aspects of categorization, human-like similarity perception and developing a neural view on the machine learning problem. In contrast to related publications, this book does not focus on one type of media but considers all the above-named as well as a few others. The author endeavors to identify similarities between the methods employed in audio retrieval, image understanding, text summarization and many other research domains. It turns out that a number of significant parallels do exist. Structuring the methods along common criteria and discussing their similarities and differences breaks the ground for a new research discipline: true computational understanding of multimedia content.

Special Issue Content Analysis and Indexing for Distributed Multimedia Search & Retrieval in Broadcasting - Springer MTAP

Posted on 03:30 by Unknown

CALL FOR JOURNAL PAPERS

Content Analysis and Indexing for Distributed
Multimedia Search & Retrieval in Broadcasting

Multimedia Tools and Applications (Special Issue)
http://www.springer.com/journal/11042

The transition to digital broadcasting and the concomitant raise of new
media channels has meant a significant increase in communication potential
for media publishers, which can now leverage the advantages of online
digital technologies to increase the value and attractiveness of their
services, thus gaining renewed value from content.

A side effect of such abundance of content is that consumers are overwhelmed
with "information overload". In fact, while digital and Internet services
are in principle more appealing due to opportunity they offer to increase
the number of thematic channels, the richness of distributed content and the
possibility for the users to interact, on the other side share and
contribute as well as the accessibility of such content still remain mostly
unresolved problems.

On the media production side, professionals often experience dual problems
in content selection and organisation for cross-media and interactive
productions. The organization of content into searchable units through the
use of flexible and scalable indexing techniques is seen as one solution to
these problems. In addition, it is of paramount importance to develop the
ability to generate, represent and distribute such informational units
(e.g., indexes) in a way that is consumable and manageable by a wide range
of end user terminals, and seamlessly integrated with web services and
mobile apps. The implementation of this scenario would give birth to a new
paradigm which would radically overcome the traditional notion of multimedia
indexing, search and retrieval based on bidirectional interactions between
users and index servers, paving the way to an ecosystem in which users of
content can at the same time have the role of indexers and publishers, and
where the universe of accessible objects is dynamically changing to meet
usage trends.

We therefore encourage the submission of works addressing single or several
components of a system for the scenario described above. Submissions should
discuss one of the following topics, with a particular emphasis on
illustrating the context of the work in such a scenario.

* Distributed multimedia feature extraction, clustering and classification
* Distributed architectures for multimedia search
* Topic and concept detection, categorization, multimedia genre / format
characterisation
* Natural query interfaces (e.g., based on speech or gesture input)
* Content segmentation and summarization
* Low complexity algorithms for acoustic, visual, and multimodal indexing
* Multimodal personality identification (i.e. leveraging multiple sources
of information)
* Visual and acoustic event detection in multimedia
* Crowd-assisted news production and material selection
* Context based retrieval and indexing of news content
* Efficient indexing of live multimedia streams
* Automated trust estimation, crowd opinion mining
* Analysis of social network activity about multimedia
* Multimedia ontologies and tagging
* HCI for efficient annotation and retrieval
* Automated cross-media and cross-device linking (incl. multiple screens
and control devices)
* User studies, requirements & trends, standardization
* Advanced user experience with multimedia
