The LinkedUp Project launches the second of the LinkedUp Challenge competitions – the Vidi Competition.

The LinkedUp Project aims to push forward the exploitation of the vast amounts of public, open data available on the Web, in particular by educational institutions and organizations.

For Vidi we're inviting you to design and build innovative and robust prototypes and demos for tools that analyse and/or integrate open web data for educational purposes. You can submit your Web application, App, analysis toolkit, documented API or any other tool that connects, exploits or analyses open or linked data and that addresses real educational needs. For Vidi your tool may contain some bugs, as long as it has a stable set of features and you have some proof that it can be deployed on a realistic scale.

This time we also have two focused tracks to run alongside our open track. In these tracks we are asking you to design a solution to the problem we have described.
- *Simplificator* calls for applications easing access to complex information by summarizing them in a simpler form.
- *Pathfinder* requires applications easing access to recommendation and guidance when chosing appropriate curriculum of courses and related resources.

The Vidi competition will run from 4th November 2013 till 14th February 2014. Prizes (up €3,000 for first prize) will be awarded at the European Semantic Web Conference in Crete, Greece in May 2014. That gives you 3 months to get designing and building. It will be a full day event in which you will have the opportunity to present your work, ideas and methodology to field experts that will provide you with personalized feedback. 

The event will also feature a keynote talk focusing on Serious Games research and a panel in which participants and tutors will debate the impacts and challenges that students face during their PhD programs.

OBJECTIVES:

The EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium brings together Ph.D. students working on topics related to Technology Enhanced Learning. The doctoral consortium will offer Ph.D. students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in an interdisciplinary and international atmosphere. The Doctoral Consortium will be accompanied by prominent professors and researchers in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning. Accompanying professors will provide feedback to the papers that are selected for the doctoral consortium and participate actively and contribute to the discussions. The Doctoral Consortium is co-located with and will take place immediately before the EC-TEL 2013 conference.
The working language of the Doctoral Consortium is English.

The intention of this doctoral consortium is to support and inspire Ph.D. students during their ongoing research efforts. Therefore, it is necessary that authors will have neither achieved their Ph.D. degree nor officially submitted their thesis before the doctoral consortium (September 2013). To enforce this rule we require authors to disclose their expected graduation date and their advisor's name when submitting.


ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION PROCESS:

In contrast to regular conference papers, submissions should address specifically doctoral work!

Therefore, the following elements have to be addressed in the papers:

* A clear formulation of the research question,
* An identification of the significant problems in the field of
research,
* An outline of the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well
as the state of existing solutions,
* A presentation of any preliminary ideas, the proposed approach and
the results achieved so far,
* A sketch of the applied research methodology,
* A description of the Ph.D. project's contribution to the problem
solution,
* A discussion of how the suggested solution is different, new, or
better as compared to existing approaches to the problem.

Papers will be reviewed by at least two senior researchers and one of the accepted doctoral candidates. Accepted students will be asked to peer-review two accepted papers prior to the Doctoral Consortium. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings at http://CEUR-WS.org.

Papers describing doctoral work should be submitted in PDF format before May 31, 2013. Authors should use the Springer LNCS format. A supporting letter by the supervisor of the Ph.D.
works should be also uploaded.


Accepted students should prepare:

1. An introduction of themselves and their Ph.D. project for the

2. A 15-20 minute presentation of their Ph.D. project to be used for
introducing discussion about their project and its main issues
during the small group sessions.

3. Students are also invited to prepare a poster about their Ph.D. for
the EC-TEL 2013 poster session.

A discussant, a member of the doctoral consortium committee, will be appointed to each accepted paper. Discussant comments will be followed by a plenary discussion of the paper. At the end of the consortium there will be a general discussion, including a brainstorming session about current and future research topics in the area.

Multiple networks have been studied in several disciplines including
computer science, physics, social network analysis, statistics and
sociology, under various names like multilayer, multiplex,
multidimensional, multimodal networks and labeled graphs.

The Symposium on Multiple Network Modeling, Analysis and Mining, that will
be held as a satellite event of the NetSci conference (the primary
conference on Network Science), will provide a detailed view over some
recent results and open problems in this field, presented by leading

The International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE) aims to promote

scientific and practical excellence in Web Engineering and to bring

together researchers and practitioners working on all aspects regarding

the engineering of Web-based software systems. The conference aims to

programming languages, algorithms, models, protocols, tools, and

Introduction

Learning Analytics as both a research topic and emerging marketplace has recently garnered the attention of faculty, educational researchers and administrators, policy makers, data scientists and learning technology entrepreneurs. Unprecedented quantity of, and access to, learner-generated data has opened up new opportunities, for instance, for researchers to better understand how learners learn, for educators to assess the impact of teaching activities and interventions, and for learners to receive personalized, real-time, automated support for their learning advancements.

Learning Analytics (LA) as a field is related to disciplines such as educational data mining, machine learning, various branches of psychology, learning sciences, psychometrics, and systems theory. LA aspires to integrate cognitive, social, pedagogical, technical, and organizational components to advance a holistic view of learners and the cognitive, social, organizational contributions to their learning processes. Cross-disciplinary research, publications, and specific documented socio-technical systems and their associated designs and algorithms are important for advancing these goals.

For the past three years, the Society for Learning Analytics Research has hosted open online courses, the international LAK conference and national meetups, initiated a distributed research lab for PhD students, and established the Journal of Learning Analytics. During this timeframe, researchers from learning sciences, computer supported collaborative learning, and related disciplines have found research affinity with the emerging LA field.

Leading international universities have initiated programs and enacted strategies to use LA to improve learner success and improve organizational effeciency. Numerous schools have adopted personalization and adaptive learning systems to support learners. Corporations and startups have also turned their focus to learning analytics, resulting in numerous entrants into the LA field to promote increased learner success and more efficient learning practices.

This bricolage of research, intersecting fields of study, and corporate activity has created an exciting, albeit sometimes confusing, landscape for academics, PhD students, and the diverse users of LA products and projects.
Summer Institute

A critical window of opportunity is opening as we stand on the threshold of what may be a new discipline with disruptive potential for educational research and practice. Bringing the right mix of people together for an intensive ‘summer camp’ could serve as an intellectual and social springboard to accelerate the maturation of the discipline — as was the case for other young disciplines, such as cognitive neuroscience.

The Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI) is a strategic five-day event, July 1-5, 2013, co-organized by SoLAR and Stanford University. The International Educational Data Mining Society is also assisting with event organization.

The objective is that participants will leave better equipped to actively engage in advancing the LA field through their teaching and research activities. Specifically, LASI has two goals:

• Build the field of Learning Analytics through cross disciplinary interactions, identification of research and teaching needs, advancement of LA methods, and connecting isolated researchers.
• Develop the skills and knowledge of doctoral students and academics, equipping them to engage actively in LA research and teaching.

Format

The Summer Institute’s goals of (1) building the LA field and (2) developing the skills of researchers, educators and students will be achieved through a combination of lectures, hands-on tutorials, group work and ample opportunity for informal interactions. Expected activities include presentations from notable researchers, innovative startups, and experts from related fields, coupled with research discussions, workshops and a doctoral consortium track will attend to supporting PhD candidates… all designed to define the needs of the LA field, identify research gaps and needs, and establish a research agenda.
Virtual / Regional / Local LASI

This is a week with a potentially global footprint, our hope being that Stanford will be just one node in a network of events. Lectures from Stanford will be live-streamed, enabling not just remote attendance, but regional Institutes and local events running in parallel. Currently there are events planned in Europe and Latin America, with others under consideration. Combine remote viewing of Stanford sessions with your own keynotes, agenda-setting workshops, hands-on tutorials and debates — whatever meets the needs of your context, with you feeding back to the network what’s unfolding in your part of the world. We anticipate these may cover the whole range from 100% online, to 50/50 blended, to 100% f-f. They may scale from nations/regions/states, to a small group in your institution translating the big ideas into practical implications. CHALLENGE OBJECTIVES

What do analytics on learning analytics tell us? How can we make sense of

Challenge submissions should exploit the LAK Dataset for a meaningful
purpose. This may include submissions which cover one or more of the
following, non-exclusive list of topics:
- Analysis & assessment of the emerging LAK community in terms of topics,
people, citations or connections with other fields
- Innovative applications to explore, navigate and visualise the dataset
(and/or its correlation with other datasets)
- Usage of the dataset as part of recommender systems

SUBMISSION FORMAT

Each submission should be accompanied by a 2-4 page paper (ACM format) that
contains at least:
- an abstract of the submission
- motivation: which purposes does your system or dataset serve?
- description of your dataset (e.g. if the LAK data is combined with other
datasets), system or demo
- a link to your dataset and/or system or demo

during an interactive session at the LAK 2013 conference in Leuven, Belgium.

expand their work as part of the LinkedUp activities. This will also provide
opportunities to present your work to a wider audience in the context of

The LAWA project organizes an one-day workshop with researchers using (or planning to use) the Web as a corpus for their studies. The focus is on methods, tools, and platforms for big-data analytics, including requirements on and experiences with such technologies. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: Web dynamics, history, and archives; text mining and contents classification, temporal/longitudinal studies, scalable methods (e.g., cloud-based map-reduce), large scale data storage, community detection and evolution.

The workshop will have presentations by participating researchers and big-data users, including the LAWA project team. Emphasis will be on experience-sharing and discussing mutual interests in big-data analytics for the temporal Web. The ELIOS Lab of the University of Genoa hosts the 4^thInternational Conference on Games and Virtual Worlds for Serious Applications, VS-Games 2012 (www.vs-games2012.org). The conference will be chaired by Alessandro De Gloria, full professor of Electronic Engineering, president of the MSc course in Electronic Engineering at the University of Genoa. He is also coordinator of the Game and Learning Alliance  (GaLA) (www.galanoe.eu), European Union 7^th Framework Programme Network of Excellence (NoE) dedicated to Serious Games, computer games ad-hoc designed for education and training.

The conference will take place in Villa Cambiaso, the seat of the Dean of the Polytechnic School of Genoa, Italy, from Monday October 29^th to Wednesday October 31^st.

The conference has been organized by the GaLA NoE and by the Serious Games Society (SGS) (www.seriousgamessociety.org), an international association that has been recently founded and that will be officially presented during the conference, on Tuesday October 30^th at 3.45 pm.

Organization of a conference specifically devoted to Serious Games (SGs) is a significant part of the GaLA vision, given the need of building and nurturing a developer (academic and industrial) community on SGs.

The conference was thought with a specific focus on SGs, given the lack, especially at European level, of an ad-hoc dedicated conference. The aim is to guarantee visibility to the field of SGs and favor community building, also involving industrial interests.

The conference received a huge amount of scientific submissions. This allowed the organizers to prepare seven high quality sessions covering all major aspects of SGs, from theoretical foundations to real-world use cases, as it is shown by the session titles: SGs’ Theoretical Foundations, SG Design Principles, SG Design, SG Engineering, SG Assessment, SGs in Formal Education, SG Application Fields. A parallel poster session will be held as well.

The conference will host three keynote speeches from the top levels of industry and EU. Marco Marsella, Deputy Head of the Unit eContent and Safer Internet of the European Commission Directorate-General for Information Society and Media, will open the conference addressing emerging trends in the EU, in a speech entitled: “Serious Games and gamification of learning: taking stock of latest EU research on Technology-Enhanced Learning”. Pascale Xélot, who is the leader for the European IBM Innovation Centers run by ISV & Developer Relations (IDR), will talk on: “How to use serious games to teach business process management in an Industry context”. Finally, Donald Brinkman, who manages external programs in digital humanities, digital heritage and games for learning at Microsoft Research in the US, will deliver a speech on “Structured Signs and Infinite Games: Serious Play for Lifelong Learning”.

The first day of the conference will be devoted to workshops and tutorials, with academic and industrial coverage. Two workshops will give attendees the possibility of making more in-depth and hands-on activities on the conference topics. The tutorial provides a multi-perspective view on entrepreneurship education through SGs, allowing participants to learn and practice about the whole SG development and deployment cycle.

In parallel to the conference, a SG exhibition will take place, with field cutting-the-edge European and American companies showing their products and doing networking. Business-to-business speed-dating and conference crawling sessions will be held as well.

During the gala dinner, on Tuesday night at the Genoa Diocesan Museum, the GaLA awards ceremony will award the best SG, best scientific SG evaluation and best SG academic paper.

VS-Games 2013 will take place in Bournemouth, in September 2013. GaLA will spawn a new, SG-specific conference, that will be held in Paris in October 2013.

Abstract of my keynote "Community Analytics – an Information Systems Perspective"

Information Systems serve the needs of organizations. With the widespread availability of free Web-based tools and social networking sites also communities with no institutional backing intensify the use of the Web. In this presentation, I motivate by examples that professional communities need community support beyond the commodity level. Community analytics in such settings need a deep understanding of interactions between community members and systems, members and resources as well as members among each others.Such a perspective is delivered by community information systems serving the needs of professional communities. The meaningful combination of quantitative and qualitative analytics strategies supports the understanding of community goals, community processes and community reflection. Case studies from ongoing EU research projects will support the argumentation.
