SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
Development of video games is by definition a multi disciplinary process involving several professions, ranging from artists to engineers.  The AAA game titles produced today require rather large teams with a high level of competence (technology, programming, networks, architecture, etc.), creativity and skills.  Compared to traditional software development, game development is characterized by rapid changes of hardware, high performance requirements, and software requirements that are unstable and hard to predict.  Video games are also used for other purposes than pure entertainment, e.g., for education, training, exercising, and simulation.

In the current trends, game developers are focusing more and more on games where players must collaborate to achieve goals in the game.  Collaborative games introduce challenges for game developers to handle technical issues, performance issues, network issues, distributed environments, sharing of information, and heterogeneous networks and devices.  Further, collaborative games open new areas and applications for games to be used for new purposes that can benefit from more than just fun. Creation of these "serious collaborative games" adds additional challenges including matching of content and game activity and modeling of player proficiencies.  As players expect that games can be played anywhere, the integration of mobile gaming, hand-held and online-gaming on smartphones, consoles and tablets is becoming ever more important.  This integration introduces new challenges and leads to new opportunities.

This Workshop on Collaboration and Gaming - held as part of the 2014 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS 2014) - will focus on the area of collaboration and gaming, with emphasis on new game concepts, new technologies, evaluations, usage areas and games prototypes.  Special attention is dedicated to serious games, in particular for learning.  The aim is to have a dedicated track that fosters closer interactions among researchers, industry and users communities, providing an opportunity for them to meet and discuss their ideas.  We invite original contributions from researchers in academia and computer industry on these emerging and important areas of information technology.  Papers should contribute to an advancement over the state of the art, preferentially providing empirical results from new tools/systems and/or user studies.

CoGames Topics of Interest include (but are not limited to): • Collaborative games, game technology and game frameworks • Collaborative serious games • Platforms for collaborative games • Usability of collaborative games • Mobile collaborative games and game frameworks • Quality of service in collaborative games • Online collaborative games • Computational and artificial intelligence to support collaborative gaming • User profiling and performance assessment in collaborative games • Modelling of users and interactions • Learning and Adaptation in collaborative games • Reliability and availability in collaborative games • Real-time issues (e.g., networking, computation) in collaborative games • Integration and interoperability in collaborative games • Pervasive/ubiquitous collaborative games • New software engineering tools and methods for designing collaborative games • Requirement engineering of collaborative games • Design and software a!

GALA Conference - Press Release

Posted on 03:36 by Unknown

This is the official press release for the upcoming GALA conference on Serious Games and Learning. Please re-distribute.

GaLA Conference 2013

Dassault Systemes will host the 2ndGames and Learning Alliance (GaLA) international conference (www.galaconf.org). The conference will be chaired by Alessandro De Gloria, who is full professor of electronic engineering at the University of Genoa, president of the Serious Games Society (www.seriousgamessociety.org) and coordinator of the Game and Learning Alliance  (GaLA) (www.galanoe.eu), European Union 7th Framework Programme Network of Excellence (NoE) dedicated to Serious Games, that are computer games ad-hoc designed for education and training.

The conference will take place at the Dassault Paris Vélizy Campus from Wednesday October 23rd to Friday October 25th.

The conference has been organized by the GaLA NoE and by the Serious Games Society (SGS) (www.seriousgamessociety.org), an international association for promoting research, development and use of serious games.

Organization of a conference specifically devoted to Serious Games (SGs) has the aim of gathering, building and nurturing an expert community on SGs which involves academic, industrial developers, teachers and corporate decision makers, to promote knowledge share, technology transfer and business development.

The conference received a huge amount of submissions concerning SGs. This has allowed the organizers to prepare six high quality sessions, with 25 speeches covering all the major phases of SG design and deployment, from the theoretical foundations to the real-world application use cases. Two panels are also foreseen, with a special focus on SG research roadmap and on technology transfer from labs to market, respectively.

The conference will host two key-note speeches. James Stewart, researcher at the European Commission Joint Research Centre IPTS, Seville, will deliver a speech on “Serious Games for empowerment and social inclusion”, while Donald Brinkman, who manages external programs in digital humanities, digital heritage and games for learning at Microsoft Research in the US, will give a talk on “Serious Play for Lifelong Learning”.

The first day of the conference will be devoted to workshops and tutorials, with academic and industrial coverage. The covered topics range from gamification to virtual reality environments, from industrial training through SGs to pedagogy-based game design. An industry event will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

As applied research should systematically confront itself with the marketplace, in parallel to the conference, a Serious Games Exhibition will take place (on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th), with field leading-edge companies showing their products and doing networking.

A Doctoral School, directed by prof. Ana Paiva, of Inesc-Id, will be held on Wednesday 23rd (http://gaips.inesc-id.pt/gala-dc/). In this event, PhD students will have the opportunity to present their work, ideas and methodology to their colleagues and a group of experienced tutors. The idea is that tutors will provide personalized feedback on the presented works. We believe this will help enormously the research of young academics entering the field of Serious games.

During the gala dinner, on Thursday night, the GaLA awards ceremony will take place, awarding the best academic papers.

The GaLA conference 2014 will take place in Bucharest (Romania), in June 2014.

Games and Learning Alliance Conference (GaLA conference 2013)

Posted on 11:22 by Unknown

Games and Learning Alliance Conference (GaLA conference 2013)
At Dassault Systemes, Paris, October 23-25 2013

AIMS AND SCOPE
There is a wide consensus in the scientific community about the educational potential of Serious Games. And serious games are being used in professional and corporate contexts to teach skills and new competences, which is particularly important in a lifelong learning perspective, to engage and train workforce, to discover and develop leaders, and to support sharing of knowledge and experience. Serious games are promising also in fields such as healthcare and personal development.

Serious games are very well suited to motivate learners and, exploiting the latest simulation and visualization technologies, are able to contextualize the player’s experience in stimulating and realistic environments. Furthermore, a large and growing population is increasingly familiar with playing games, which makes them particularly suited as a powerful instructional tool.
However, so far, only few tests have clearly shown the educational effectiveness of serious games. In general, most authors agree that more extensive tests need to be performed in order to provide valid and reliable evidence for effectiveness of serious games as educational tools. Serious games should lead to improved learning in an efficient and attractive way. We believe that providing evidence of these benefits is key to promote serious games for education and training amongst the large public of families, teachers and stakeholders.
Furthermore, there is a growing concern that there is a need for scientific and engineering methods for building games as means that provide effective learning experiences. An effective application of SGs for education and training demands appropriate metrics, analytics, tools, and techniques for in-game user assessment, in order to allow meeting the educational goals, provide proper user feedback and support adaptivity. This can be achieved in particular by measuring elements such as learning outcomes and engagement, considering the twofold nature of SGs as compelling games that achieve some precise educational goals. We believe that this is necessary in order to develop a new generation of SGs that are able to meet the above mentioned expectations and the requirements for availability of more effective education-supporting tools.

Both the Department and the Faculty strive to strengthen the research in computer science and information science with applications in gaming technology and expand in the domains of interaction technology, artificial intelligence for games, and the study of game architectures. The research of the department is grouped into four clusters: Software Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Worlds and Interaction Technology.
The Department offers bachelor programs in computer science and information science, and four English-language research master-programs including Business Informatics. High enrollment figures and good student ratings make the education very successful. Information Science and Business Informatics at Utrecht combine knowledge from different
disciplines: computer science, management science, information sciences and social sciences.

Chair of Software Production
The Chair of Software production is part of the Cluster Software Systems. It provides education and conducts research on the application of information and communication technology in organizations. In education the chair contributes in particular to the Bachelor of Information Science and the Master Business Informatics, of which they are the program leader.
In its research, the chair focuses on the methodology of software
production: standard software and information services for a specific market segment. We are working on three research themes: methodology of product development (requirements, architecture, deployment, quality assurance), implementation and knowledge management, and entrepreneurship in ecosystems. The research is highly experimental and empirical in nature. Currently the chair consists of 1 full professor, 5 associate and assistant professors and 18 PhD students. The Chair organizes the Netherlands ICT SoftwareVOC, a knowledge network for CXO roles in the software industry, for knowledge building and empirical research in this sector. Postgraduate courses are also provided in the area of software product management.
