IWCL 2012 Contributions from the ACIS Group at RWTH Aachen University

Posted on 01:54 by Unknown
The 11th International Conference on Web-based Learning ICWL 2012, Sinaia, Romania is over. Our Advanced Community Information Systems (ACIS) group at RWTH Aachen University has made some contributions to the program.

In the learning analytics track we had a paper on "Learning Analytics for Learning Blogospheres" . It combines research from the TELMAP as well from the TELLNET project.

Manh Pham, Michael Derntl, Yiwei Cao, Ralf Klamma: Learning Analytics for Learning Blogospheres, in E. Popescu et al. (Eds.): ICWL 2012, LNCS 7558, pp. 255–264, 2012. Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012

Abstract. In blogospheres the learning process is characterized by evolving roles of bloggers and dynamic change of content. Existing approaches for learning blogospheres do not provide a comprehensive solution to dealing with these dynamics. In this paper, we propose a learning analytics approach for learning blogospheres unifying two complementary perspectives: (1) structural analysis of the blogosphere to identify learners' social capital; and (2) content analysis to capture dynamics in blog content over time. To support both types of analysis, social network analysis methods are applied as a fundamental approach to analyzing and visualizing knowledge sharing on learning blogospheres. We exemplify the learning analytics approach using two real-world learning blogospheres: the Mediabase - a large blog collection for technology enhanced learning, and the European eTwinning Network - a lifelong learning blogsphere. Results show that both analytics perspectives in combination advocate an advanced learning analytics approach to understanding and assessing learning processes in learning blogospheres.

In the personal learning environments track we had a paper on "A Mashup Recommender for Creating Personal Learning Environments". It presents research from the ROLE project. This paper won the ICWL 2012 best paper award!

Alexander Nussbaumer, Marcel Berthold, Daniel Dahrendorf, Hans-Christian Schmitz, Milos Kravcik, Dietrich Albert: A Mashup Recommender for Creating Personal Learning Environments, in E. Popescu et al. (Eds.): ICWL 2012, LNCS 7558, pp. 79–88, 2012. Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012 (Best Paper Award)
Abstract. This paper presents an approach and an integrated tool that supports the creation of personal learning environments suitable for self-regulated learning. The rationale behind this approach is an ontology of cognitive and meta-cognitive learning activities that are related to widgets from a Widget Store. Patterns of such learning activities allow for providing the user with appropriate recommendations of widgets for each learning activity. The system architecture follows a Web-based approach and includes the Mashup Recommender widget and its backend service, the ontology available through a Web service, the Widget Store with its interface to retrieve widgets, and the integration into the learning environment framework. The pedagogical approach regarding the usage of this technology is based on self-regulated learning taking into account different levels between guidance and freedom. A quantitative and qualitative evaluation with teachers describes advantages and ideas for improvement.

Learning Analytics for Learning Blogospheres

Posted on 05:08 by Unknown
My colleague Yiwei Cao from my ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University gave a presentation on "Learning Analytics for Learning Blogospheres" at the ICWL 2012 in Sinaia, Romania last week. It combines research from the TELMAP as well from the TELLNET project.

The 11th International Conference on Web-based Learning (ICWL 2012) - Final Program

Posted on 05:20 by Unknown

ICWL 2012
The 11th International Conference on Web-based Learning
2-4 September 2012, Sinaia, Romania
http://www.hkws.org/conference/icwl2012/

Final Program

Keynote speech 1 – Sunday, September 2, 10.15 – 11.15
Title: From Transfer of Learning to Transfer Learning
Speaker: Qiang Yang

Abstract. In today's networked world, it is possible to create an atmosphere of community effort and sharing, which will significantly benefit collaborative topic study. Usually, people finish their own works on their personal computing devices and discuss together. When discussing, frequent exchange of ideas and documents occurs, and problems of inefficient device switching come out consequently. Even more, comparison among parts of work from different group members is lack of supporting technology. This talk will present UI (User Interface) Sharing technologies, which could help creating a truly collaborative environment. In such scenario, a large display serves as a natural substrate for people to get together and perform their tasks simultaneously, which greatly promotes work efficiency in comparison with the single presenter style. Peripheral computing devices, such as laptops, mobile phones and tablet PCs, communicate with large displays (wall or tabletop) via wireless network. To deal with the differences in file types and platforms, only designated visual representation of the opened documents and software will be transferred to the large display. Participants can interact with the distributively archived digital content via shared UI on large displays. Related technologies will be discussed in this talk.

"Learning within and from the 'Smart Cities'" (SCiLearn 2012)

Posted on 04:30 by Unknown

"Learning within and from the 'Smart Cities'"
(SCiLearn 2012)
Sinaia (Romania), September 2-4, 2012

co-located at
ICWL 2012
http://www.hkws.org/conference/icwl2012/

organized by
Dept. of Science and Tehnology of Education&     IaD School of Tor Vergata
University of Rome
and
PH Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education.

Temporary workshop website:
http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/inevent/events/scilearn2012/index.php

-----------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTION
-------------
This workshop proposes itself as a "think tank" to foster a reflection on how the way we learn may be influenced and changed because of the development of 'smart cities', but also 'smart villages' and 'smart territories'.
From the Far East, to the Americas and to Europe, cities and their surroundings are evolving towards a new dimension in which the info infrastructure becomes an indispensable asset of our life, contributes to the development of info-ecosystems embracing 'smart mobility and last-mile logistics', 'smart health', 'smart government', 'smart culture and tourism', the sustainability of the natural resources and the green economy. Such integrated effort of info-urbanism is expected to produce social innovation and, inevitably, leads to wonder about what forms can take the smart education underlined by all pieces that compose the mosaic of the info-ecosystems.
The person, considered in all her/his complexity, will be placed at the center of educational contexts and scenarios increasingly ubiquitous, complex, organic. The perimeter of the physical space in which the educational experiences develop will become increasingly undefined, liquid and will host more and more nomadic and informal practices characterized by a high density of social interactions. In these scenarios, the mediating role of technology will widen over the time to:
foster relationships with the natural environments, filter content needed to support meaningful experiences at glocal level, disclose feedback necessary to learn how to manage "in action", the complexity of static and dynamic, of learning contexts and processes.

Through which educational path people will become "participatorly" aware citizens of the future "SimCities"? How will we learn from the open books that are represented by the cities of art? How will data flowing from sensorized areas will be elaborated to support awareness and learning? How will our behavior be influenced by knowledge of co-evolution mechanisms and limits of the ecosystems? Will the educational infrastructure be smart enough to readjust, even autopoietically, to satisfy the needs that everyone could develop life long, in different contexts?
The future perspective is that of territories that become increasingly open to awareness and participation and of a 'smart education' that becomes more and more spatially widespread and temporally continuous.

IMPORTANT DATES
----------------
* June 10, 2012: Deadline for submission of contributions
* July 1, 2012: Authors' Notification on the review process results
* July 15, 2012: Authors' Registration Deadline and upload of Final Camera-Ready Manuscript

TOPICS OF INTEREST
-----------------
Papers are solicited on the following 'open' list of topics:

• Technological Ecosystems supporting learning within and from the 'smart cities' (toward 'web-mobile-internet of thing' integrated
environments)
• Future 'smart cities' learning scenarios (contexts and methods) • Ecological monitoring and visualization of flows, behaviours, experience's styles and 'smart cities' learning • The impact of contextualization, glocalities, identities • Educational Ecosystems: from ''intelligence' to autopoietic education
(edupoiesis)

Dynamic Network Analysis for Computer Science Publications

Posted on 01:44 by Unknown

Dynamic network properties of ICALT, ICWL and ECTEL

AERCS is a visualization tool for communities of academic events in Computer Science. It is developed and hosted by the Advanced Community Information Systems (ACIS) group at  RWTH Aachen University, Germany. Currently, conferences and journals from the DBLP dataset are visualized. Other data sets will be integrated in the future.  While this bibliographic data set is quite comprehensive it does not show all publications!

Dynamic network analysis uses time series analysis of networks to explore dynamic patterns of networks such as growth and decay. A typical result of our research is the dynamic comparison of computer science communities. A computer science conference or journal can be compared by time series analysis for typical social network growth patterns like density, diameter, clustering coefficient, largest connected component, average path length and maximum betweenness. In our example above, we compare three major conferences in technology enhanced learning: the EC-TEL, the ICALT and the ICWL community. Here, we visualize the time series analysis of the co-authorship network of the three conferences.
For the co-authorship network, the emergence of the giant component (largest component) indicates the cohesiveness of collaboration within the community, while the betweenness shows the existence of gatekeepers and their importance. The clustering coefficient measures the extent to which the community is clustered into sub-communities. Other parameters such as diameter and average shortest path length, show whether the community is still developing or whether it is stable. A complete analysis of the three communities will be published in a future issue of the Journal of Educational Technology & Society.

Everybody can use this service for comparing journals and conference in computer science by means of dynamic network analysis. Just visit AERCS and test it out!

This service is brought to you by the chair of information systems and databases at RWTH Aachen University.
