My colleague István Koren from the ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University gave a presentation at the CollaborateCom 2013, in Autin, TX. As usual the slides are available in slideshare.
In this presentation we concentrate on principle libraries available for supporting shared editing and collaborative activities in near real-time on the Web. Thus all libraries are in Javascript. Some of them make use of XMPP. This is also the first time, we present the House of Quality application in the public. This tool is based on the Google Real-Time API and supports prioritization of requirements. We made use of this app in the Layers project but it is available in the Google Web Store for free.

At the CollobarateCom 2013 in Austin, TX, my colleague Petru Nicolaescu from the ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University gave a presentation about our near real-time browser based collaborative modeling approach. As usual the slides are available in slideshare.
We are working on near real-time collaboration since a while and have now a couple of prototypes implementing use cases going beyond the support systems like Google Docs are offering. A field of particular interest is collaborative modeling. Modeling is a very complex activities and collaborative modeling demands a lot of communication among a community of modeling practitioners, especially when the community members have a different background or a different level of expertise in modeling. But the demand for collaborative modeling is growing since in many domains cost pressures and digitization are requesting more predictable processes and outcomes. In this presentation we have a community of teachers which are authoring courses using IMS LD. Tool support for IMS LD has been shown to be effective for the modeling process but current tools are limited in their usability, since they are not supporting collaborative activities or they are not Web-enabled and near real-time. Based on the ROLE framework we have realized the SyncLD prototype which has been evaluated in the METIS project.

This week the Learning Layers Developer Camp took place the first time at RWTH Aachen University. It was very sucessful in my eyes. We had four groups of students working on mobile apps for informal learning. I am sure my colleages will blog about this event in the official Learning Layers Blog. It was my pleasure to give a keynote to the students, introducing the project and some more technical aspects of Learning Layers. I was asked to upload the slides which are collected from many partners in Learning Layers by my colleages István and Petru. As usual the slides are available on slideshare.

The idea of organizing developer camps comes from the ROLE project. The main goal is to facilitate community building among the project internal developers as well as with external developers from university and the open source movement. In ROLE we had a couple of developer camps during the project and the most visible outcome was the ROLE SDK which is now available as open source software. In Learning Layers we are starting the process with a developer camp in Aachen. We are using the premises of RWTH Aachen's computer science department and invite students from the university but also other developers to join the core group of Learning Layers developers coming from Graz, Helsinki, Karlsruhe and Aachen.
The developer camp 2013 is organized by ACIS team members István Koren and Petru Nicolaescu. Petru has already experiences organizing the i5 developer days as a research student a couple of years ago. The both created a couple of news items and a poster to make the event most visible within the university and the local developer community. For sure, I support this by giving a number of links here:

At the 21st IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 15th to 19th July, 2013, Dominik Renzel from the ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University presented a poster and demonstration of Requirements Bazaar, a Web-based tool for Social Requirements Engineering. In contrast to previous years, best poster and tool demo awards were judged by the conference audience. Each conference participant could vote by attaching sticky notes in different colors standing for different amounts of points. Our demo received by far the most sticky notes with "good colors" in comparison to the 7 other demos. In the end, we won the prestigious RE'13 Best Tool Demo award. Thanks to all colleagues contributing to this very nice result! In particular, we thank our student Malte Behrendt, who realized the Requirements Bazaar in his master thesis.

Anna Hannemann from the ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University gave a presentation on "Community Dynamics in Open Source Software Projects: Aging and Social Reshaping" at the Open Source Systems Conference in Slovenia. This presentation is part of our research on community analytics which makes heavy use of social network analysis.

Tomorrow, our colleagues from the TU Dresden will visit the ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University. Daniel Schuster will give a computer science colloquium talk at the computer science department of RWTH Aachen University. He will talk about "XMPP - The Potential Heartbeat of Global-Scale Pervasive Computing". Details can be found here.
Since the TU Dresden group and the ACIS group are both working on similar topics, we expect a lively discussion and future collaboration.
Abstract: The original vision of Pervasive Computing as an experience "refreshing as a walk in the woods" has been quite over-stressed in the last years. Nowadays we already live in a world of personal device zoos (notebooks, pads, phones and even smart watches), immersive social interaction and more and more addressable things connected to this overall experience. But while each of the demoed use cases looks impressive by itself, there is yet no means of global-scale communication and coordination to connect these isolated islands comparable to HTTP in connection with HTML and other standards for the Web. We explain how the eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol XMPP is about to fill this gap and what is still missing. After a crash course in relevant XMPP basics we show current research and standardization work in XMPP for pervasive computing, social computing and the Internet of Things. We furthermore present research work within the Mobilis project at TU Dresden which adds session mobility and service-oriented XMPP development to these building blocks.

EC-TEL 2013: Eighth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
"Scaling Up Learning for Sustained Impact"

The European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL) is a unique
opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to address
current challenges and advances in the field. Through EC-TEL, established
and emerging researchers as well as practitioners, entrepreneurs, and
technology developers explore new collaborations, strengthen networks, and
compliment their core experience.
There is no doubt that Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) has created
enormous changes in schools, universities and at the workplaces. However,
these innovations have tended to be unsustainable. Too often, initiatives
need a high degree of effort to be sustained, and are consequently
endangered when funding stops. At the same time, mobile and social
information and communication technologies are fundamentally changing our
lives. Nowadays we use them naturally to keep in contact with our friends,
to seek information, to buy things and to work. In many domains, these
emerging technologies demonstrate that scaling is possible. But few
educational institutions or companies have taken these technologies up in a
systematic way to include them into their learning strategy.
To address these challenges the theme of EC-TEL 2013 is "Scaling up learning
for sustained impact".
In this spirit, we want to offer you a chance to present existing prototypes
and work in progress to ECTEL community to create sustained impact,
dissemination and create potentials for scaling up the use to a wider
audience.
Extended demonstrations of prototypes and "TEL in action" will spark
discussions between different but complimentary groups, and be animated and
disseminated through live internet radio broadcasts, videos, etc. EC-TEL
2013 will examine and improve the transitions between research, practice and
industry.
In this special call we invite contributions for demonstrations and posters
that can be exhibited and discussed along the conference. Details of
conference topics are available at http://ec-tel.eu/, and in this second
call especially we encourage highly visual and engaging demos, such as
Serious Games, Virtual Worlds, Immersive Multimedia, and Collaborative
Learning Systems.
Posters report on significant work in progress. We will have an interactive
poster session in which you can present your work and elicit feedback from
EC-TEL participants.
A demonstration is your chance to fully engage EC-TEL attendees at a
personal level by letting them see, touch, squeeze, or hear your visions for
the future of TEL, or demonstrate highly interactive "TEL in Action"
(e.g. through videos or real-time learning experiences).
We expect that your Demonstration will be a reliably running prototype of
your vision that is ready to be tried out, questioned and interacted with.
You need to submit a concise description of your prototype, clearly showing
how your technological innovation realises a clear learning innovation.
Please also indicate any special technical requirements needed for the
demonstration at the conference location.
At the conference, all accepted demonstrations will be invited to
participate in the "EC-TEL 2013 Demo sprint contest". The audience of the
"EC-TEL 2013 Demo sprint contest" will vote for the best EC-TEL
demonstration in this session and the winner will be awarded with a prize
from Online Educa Berlin Conference (see below).

The first prize for the demo sprint contest is sponsored by ONLINE EDUCA

The posters and demonstrations accepted in this second special call
will not be published in the proceedings but will be exhibited during
the whole conference and be present at the ECTEL website. Demonstrations
accepted in this call will also participate in the "EC-TEL 2013 Demo sprint
contest" and are eligible to win the first prize.

My colleague Dejan Kovachev gave this lecture "Personal Clouds for Learning" at the JTEL Summer School 2013. The lecture for PhD students in technology enhanced learning combines pedagogies, personal knowledge management and cloud computing in a new way. Some case studies illustrate the application of the approach, e.g. for micro-learning and semantic video annotation.

Anna Hannemann from the ACIS group did a presentation on "An Adaptive Filter-Framework for the Quality Improvement of Open-Source Software Analysis" at the main German software engineering conference SE 2013 in Aachen last week. Here are the slides. This is part of Annas work on social network analysis of open-source projects.

Petru Nicoleascu produced a video for the demonstration of the mobile Gigapixel Service for Android created by the ACIS group. The service was demonstrated at the Learning Layers Design Conference at Aalto University in Helsinki from March 4-6, 2013. At the design conference we are building first paper prototypes for the user stories collected in the last weeks by the project partners in Bremen and Leeds.
