Special Issue on Participatory Sensing and Crowd Intelligence - ACM TIST

Posted on 09:20 by Unknown
Call for papers
ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (ACM TIST)
Special Issue on
Participatory Sensing and Crowd Intelligence (PS/CI)

Introduction
Participatory Sensing (PS) is an emerging computing paradigm that tasks
everyday mobile devices to form participatory sensor networks. It allows
the increasing number of mobile phone users to share local knowledge
acquired by their sensor-enhanced devices, e.g., to monitor pollution
level or noise level, traffic condition, etc. Here, we make an extension
to the original definition of sensing sources in participatory sensing,
from mobile devices to any human life-loggers, such as sensor-equipped
vehicles, smart cards, social network services (the so-called virtual
sensors), and so on. The sensing data from volunteer contributors can be
further analyzed and processed to form Crowd Intelligence (CI), and
leveraged in many areas such as environment monitoring, urban planning,
emergency management, as well as public healthcare/safety. Numerous
challenges are raised: How can people and devices be connected so that
they act more intelligently than any individuals or devices have ev!
er done before? How to accomplish the tasks unintentionally or with
minimum user effort? How to extract crowd intelligence/knowledge from
multimodal, low quality data contributed by volunteers? What are the
incentive mechanisms to encourage human participation? How to protect
human data privacy¡
This theme issue of ACM TIST (indexed by SCI-E and EI) provides the
opportunity for researchers and product developers to review and discuss
the state-of-the-art and trends of PS/CI techniques and intelligent
systems.

Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- AI techniques in PS/CI
- Crowd Data Collection and Intelligent Task Allocation
- Incentive Mechanisms for Human Participation
- Data Processing and Crowd Intelligence Mining
- Data Quality, Trust, and Privacy
- Knowledge Modeling and Management in PS/CI
- Intelligent applications supported by PS/CI (Smart City, Public Health, etc.)
- Crowd Intelligence Systems
- Intelligent User Interfaces for PS/CI
- Evaluation Metrics and Empirical Studies of PS/CI

It should be noted that we welcome papers that are relevant to the above
topics, but discourage papers that make contributions to only
networking/sensor issues but do not contribute to topics of interest to
TIST (e.g., topics on AI, intelligent systems).

Submissions
Manuscripts should be submitted online:
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tist (please select "Special Issue:
Participatory Sensing and Crowd Intelligence" as the manuscript type).
Details of the journal and manuscript preparation are available on the

Journal special issue on MMOGs - IEEE TETC

Posted on 01:55 by Unknown
CALL FOR PAPERS Massively Multiplayer Online Games Technologies and Applications
IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing
Special Issue/Section June Issue 2014
http://www.computer.org/cms/Computer.org/transactions/cfps/cfp_tetcsi_mmogta.pdf

IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing (TETC) seeks original manuscripts for a Special Section on Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) Technologies and Applications scheduled to appear in the June Issue of 2014.
MMOGs are gaining an increasing importance worldwide because they pose a number of new challenges to science, engineering, and industry, not to mention that they constitute a vibrant market that involves large budgets and businesses. These challenges may be understood from three points of view: computing, information, and communication. Having computers capable of dealing with massive data and computations per time unit is essential for online games demanding interactive rates or real-time, but it is not least true we need enough network bandwidth in order to guarantee that the game updates across the network are conveyed and received without lags. Recall that online games as, for example, World of Warcraft has over ten million subscribers with a peak of about half a million players interacting simultaneously within a virtual world. In general terms, we can even say that computer games constitute the driving force behind the new generation of high-end GPU-based personal computers that produce stunning graphics and deliver massive general-purpose computations.
This special issue will cover enabling technologies for MMOGs, as well as applications of MMOGs in other domains like military training, e-learning, among others. The focus will be mostly on the technological aspects of games, i.e., the computing (e.g., load balancing), information (e.g., persistent worlds), and communication (e.g., networking topologies as P2P), but high-quality papers that tackle these technological aspects in non-massive multiuser games may be also considered if they are able to contribute with solutions that can benefit MMOGs too. Hence, topics include, but are not limited to:

 Security Issues, Anti-Cheating Solutions, and Trust Modeling
 Computer-Human Interaction, User Behavior Analysis, Game Design Experience
 Scalability, Quality of Service and Latency Compensation Techniques
 Network Protocols, Traffic Analysis and Modeling
 Decentralized / Peer to Peer / Overlay Networks
 System Design / Architecture
 Sensor Networks for Games
 Grid and Cloud Computing and Mobile Games
 GPUs and Networks for Games
 Seamless Movement and Migration of Players
 Persistent Worlds and Embedded Databases

Special Issue on Identity, Privacy, and Deception in Social Networks (IEEE Internet Computing)

Posted on 04:19 by Unknown
IEEE Internet Computing
Special Issue on Identity, Privacy, and Deception in Social Networks

Final submissions due: 1 July 2013
Publication date: March/April 2014

Please email the guest editors a brief description of the article you plan
to submit by 15 June 2013.

Social networks have quickly become the key organizing principle of
Internet communication and collaboration. Examples include connecting
friends and colleagues (such as Facebook or LinkedIn) to online social
media sites (YouTube, Flickr, and so on) to large-scale information
sharing communities (such as reddit and Yahoo! Answers) to crowd-based
funding services (Kickstarter and IndieGoGo) to Web-scale crowdsourcing
systems (Amazon Mechanical Turk or Crowdflower), and so on. Although
Internet-enabled social networks offer tremendous opportunities,
widespread interest in and growth of these systems raises new risks and
growing concerns. For instance, social network users can be bullied, their
pictures can be stolen, or their status posts can reach unwanted
audiences. Even when profiles don't list any information, social graphs
can be analyzed to infer personal information. Risks are also related to
identity management because, in these social scenarios, an individual's
online identity, which is strictly related to reputation and trust, is less and
less virtual and has more and more impact on real, offline life. A battle
now exists between individual privacy and the interests of the system at
large.

This special issue aims to bring together new research results from a
variety of backgrounds that address these common core challenges. Topics
of particular interest include

(*) methods for protecting privacy in social networks;
(*) algorithms, theories, and systems for detecting deception in social
networks;
(*) privacy-preserving methods for data access and data mining;
(*) identity theft in social networks;
(*) identity management in social networks;
(*) online and social identity; and
(*) trust and reputation in social networks.

Editors' note: We encourage submissions from both academic and industrial
practitioners, especially as they pertain to open source tools or
products, but content must have technical merit, not be an advertisement.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words,
focused on Internet technologies and implementations. All manuscripts are
subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to IC's
international readershipâ€"primarily practicing engineers and academics
who are looking for material that introduces new technology and broadens
familiarity with current topics. We do not accept white papers, and we
discourage strictly theoretical or mathematical papers. To submit a
manuscript, please log on to ScholarOne
(https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com:443/ic-cs) to create or access an
account, which you can use to log on to IC's Author Center and upload your
submission.

Special Issue on Trusting the Social Web - WWWJ

Posted on 07:25 by Unknown

Special Issue Call for Papers:

Trusting the Social Web

World Wide Web Journal
http://WWWJ.edmgr.com

Guest Editors:
Dr. Surya Nepal, CSIRO ICT Centre, Australia, Email: Surya.Nepal@CSIRO.AU
Dr. Cecile Paris, CSIRO ICT Centre, Australia Email: Cecile.Paris@CSIRO.AU
Prof. Athman Bouguettaya, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, Email: athman.bouguettaya@rmit.edu.au

Social media has increasingly become mainstream for a variety of purposes
ranging from online journalism (e.g., blogs), online knowledge base (e.g.,
Wikepedia), online marketing (e.g., Twitter), to keep in touch with friends,
family and professional colleagues online (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).
These technologies have given a birth of social media oriented Web, also
known as Social Web. The popularity of the Social Web is increasing
exponentially. It is reported that 66 percent of online adults are connected
to one or more social media platforms and 50 percent of them say they check
in to their favorite social media site first thing in the morning everyday.
This trend is likely to grow as the number of smartphones shipments is
expected to reach 1 billion by 2015 and the value of social commerce is
expected to reach 30 billion dollars within next five years. Similarly, 13
percent of digital news consumers follow the recommendations from Twitter
and FaceBook. Therefore, the Social Web is here to stay for the next decade
and will revolutionise the way we live right from communicating with our
family and friends to conducting businesses. In a nutshell, the Social Web
provides a unique platform for digitising our behavior which has enormous
potential to change the way we conduct ourselves.

The phenomenon of the Social Web has caught the attention of research
communities in the last decade. Researchers from diverse disciplines ranging
from social and behavior science to computer science have started looking at
the issues and challenges in the Social Web. Within computer science,
researchers from established research areas such as language technologies
and machine learning to emerging research areas such as service and cloud
computing have started looking at computational and development challenges
brought by Social Web. With the continued reports of breach of trust and
hoax news spreading from social media to mainstream news, trusting the
Social Web has become one of the major challenges that need to be addressed.
This special issue focuses on this challenge.

The Social Web provides a unique platform for sharing information and
knowledge for individuals as well as businesses.
As the Social Web is inherently open and free, it lacks the central control
or authority that asserts the trustworthiness of the people and content in
it. It is hard to distinguish what is rumor and what is truth. For example,
many statesmen/stateswomen (e.g., Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev,
Margaret Thatcher, etc) and celebrities (e.g, Lady Gaga, Eddie Murphy, etc.)
have witness their own death in the Social Web. This fake death news has
been filtered into the mainstream newspapers and televisions without much
scrutiny and verification due to the high competition of being the first to
report the news. On the flip side, Social Media plays a major role in
reporting political news (such as the Arab Spring) and natural disasters
(such as the Japan Tsunami and the New Zealand earthquakes), and it helps to
consolidate the global efforts towards them. Furthermore, people have
started relying on Social Web from travel to healthcare advice. Therefore,
it is important to address the issue of trust in the Social Web in order to
take full advantage of it for the betterment of human society. In the Social
Web, there are three essential entities that are involved in trust directly:
people, service providers and contents. In this special issue, we are
looking for innovative technologies and solutions from diverse disciplines
that address the issue of trust in the Social Web.

The topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited
to:

- Algorithms and protocol of establishing trust in the Social Web
- Propagation of trust/rumor in the Social Web
- Mechanisms of establishing credibility of people in the Social Web
- Provenance of content in the Social Web
- Privacy in the Social Web
- Analysis of trust in existing Social Web platforms
- Case studies
