I was invited to give a presentation on "Community Learning Analytics" at the ICWL 2013 in Kenting, Taiwan. I developed the concept of community learning analytics recently to distinguish it from learning analytics. While mainstream learning analytics is targeting at formal learning and learning management systems, community learning analytics is trying to understand informal learning at the workplace from a community of practice perspective. From a perspective of European projects this presentation is connecting results from the ROLE project with challenges from the Learning Layers project which started recently. As usual, the slides are available from slideshare.

ACIS Keynote - First Learning Layers Developer Camp
Posted on 20:51 by Unknown
This week the Learning Layers Developer Camp took place the first time at RWTH Aachen University. It was very sucessful in my eyes. We had four groups of students working on mobile apps for informal learning. I am sure my colleages will blog about this event in the official Learning Layers Blog. It was my pleasure to give a keynote to the students, introducing the project and some more technical aspects of Learning Layers. I was asked to upload the slides which are collected from many partners in Learning Layers by my colleages István and Petru. As usual the slides are available on slideshare.

First Learning Layers Developer Camp at RWTH Aachen University
Posted on 05:29 by Unknown
The idea of organizing developer camps comes from the ROLE project. The main goal is to facilitate community building among the project internal developers as well as with external developers from university and the open source movement. In ROLE we had a couple of developer camps during the project and the most visible outcome was the ROLE SDK which is now available as open source software. In Learning Layers we are starting the process with a developer camp in Aachen. We are using the premises of RWTH Aachen's computer science department and invite students from the university but also other developers to join the core group of Learning Layers developers coming from Graz, Helsinki, Karlsruhe and Aachen.
The developer camp 2013 is organized by ACIS team members István Koren and Petru Nicolaescu. Petru has already experiences organizing the i5 developer days as a research student a couple of years ago. The both created a couple of news items and a poster to make the event most visible within the university and the local developer community. For sure, I support this by giving a number of links here:
- Developer Camp news items on the website of our chair
- Developer Camp news item on the website of the project
- Developer Camp news item on the website of RWTH computer science department

ACIS Keynote - Supporting Professional Communities in the Next Web
Posted on 02:55 by Unknown
I had the pleasure to give a keynote at the PWM Wissenstag Social Enterprise @ I-KNOW 2013 in Graz, Austria on September 4, 2013. Also I demoed the ROLE Sandbox and our new DireWolf Framework for distributing web user interfaces on different devices. Here are the slides.
If you are interested in the demos. They are available on the web.

At the 21st IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 15th to 19th July, 2013, Dominik Renzel from the ACIS group at RWTH Aachen University presented a poster and demonstration of Requirements Bazaar, a Web-based tool for Social Requirements Engineering. In contrast to previous years, best poster and tool demo awards were judged by the conference audience. Each conference participant could vote by attaching sticky notes in different colors standing for different amounts of points. Our demo received by far the most sticky notes with "good colors" in comparison to the 7 other demos. In the end, we won the prestigious RE'13 Best Tool Demo award. Thanks to all colleagues contributing to this very nice result! In particular, we thank our student Malte Behrendt, who realized the Requirements Bazaar in his master thesis.
More information on Requirements Bazaar including videos, papers, etc. is available at http://requirements-bazaar.org/info.

ACIS Workshop - Semantic Video Annotation for Informal Learning
Posted on 02:57 by Unknown
Petru, Milos, Michael and me gave a workshop on a semantic video annotation approach for informal learning. We are working on this in the Learning Layers project. In this workshop we explored the different interfaces we have designed and implemented for the use case of semantic video annotation. We have Web-based, widget-Based, distributed and mobile interfaces. After some tasks with the interfaces we explored further together with the workshop participants how semantic video annotation can unlock peer production and support scaffolding in informal learning based on real user stories collected in the construction industry within the Layers project. The slides are available from slideshare and Petru prepared a web page, where you can find access to all the prototypes and the workshop materials. We will continue the quest for semantic video annotation using our Requirements Bazaar, a system for social requirements engineering, which has been recently accepted as a demo for the IEEE Requirements Engineering 2013 conference.

ACIS video - Mobile Gigapixel Service for Android Devices
Posted on 01:21 by Unknown
Petru Nicoleascu produced a video for the demonstration of the mobile Gigapixel Service for Android created by the ACIS group. The service was demonstrated at the Learning Layers Design Conference at Aalto University in Helsinki from March 4-6, 2013. At the design conference we are building first paper prototypes for the user stories collected in the last weeks by the project partners in Bremen and Leeds.
If you have any question, please do not hesitate us by email at acis@dbis.rwth-aachen.de.
