Special Issue on Participatory Sensing and Crowd Intelligence - ACM TIST

Posted on 09:20 by Unknown
Call for papers
ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (ACM TIST)
Special Issue on
Participatory Sensing and Crowd Intelligence (PS/CI)

Introduction
Participatory Sensing (PS) is an emerging computing paradigm that tasks
everyday mobile devices to form participatory sensor networks. It allows
the increasing number of mobile phone users to share local knowledge
acquired by their sensor-enhanced devices, e.g., to monitor pollution
level or noise level, traffic condition, etc. Here, we make an extension
to the original definition of sensing sources in participatory sensing,
from mobile devices to any human life-loggers, such as sensor-equipped
vehicles, smart cards, social network services (the so-called virtual
sensors), and so on. The sensing data from volunteer contributors can be
further analyzed and processed to form Crowd Intelligence (CI), and
leveraged in many areas such as environment monitoring, urban planning,
emergency management, as well as public healthcare/safety. Numerous
challenges are raised: How can people and devices be connected so that
they act more intelligently than any individuals or devices have ev!
er done before? How to accomplish the tasks unintentionally or with
minimum user effort? How to extract crowd intelligence/knowledge from
multimodal, low quality data contributed by volunteers? What are the
incentive mechanisms to encourage human participation? How to protect
human data privacy¡
This theme issue of ACM TIST (indexed by SCI-E and EI) provides the
opportunity for researchers and product developers to review and discuss
the state-of-the-art and trends of PS/CI techniques and intelligent
systems.

Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- AI techniques in PS/CI
- Crowd Data Collection and Intelligent Task Allocation
- Incentive Mechanisms for Human Participation
- Data Processing and Crowd Intelligence Mining
- Data Quality, Trust, and Privacy
- Knowledge Modeling and Management in PS/CI
- Intelligent applications supported by PS/CI (Smart City, Public Health, etc.)
- Crowd Intelligence Systems
- Intelligent User Interfaces for PS/CI
- Evaluation Metrics and Empirical Studies of PS/CI

It should be noted that we welcome papers that are relevant to the above
topics, but discourage papers that make contributions to only
networking/sensor issues but do not contribute to topics of interest to
TIST (e.g., topics on AI, intelligent systems).

OVERVIEW
Social networking is profoundly changing the way that people communicate and interact on a daily basis. As eScience is inherently collaborative, social networks can serve as a vital means for supporting information and resource sharing, aiding discovery of connected researchers, improving communication between globally dispersed individuals, and even measuring scientific impact. Consequently, eScience systems are increasingly integrating social networking concepts to improve collaboration. For example, researcher profiles and groups exist in publication networks, such as Google scholar and Mendeley, and eScience infrastructures, such as MyExperiment, NanoHUB and GlobusOnline all utilize social networking principles to enhance scientific collaboration. In addition to incorporating explicit social networks, eScience infrastructures can also leverage implicit social networks extracted from relationships expressed in collaborative activities (e.g. publication authorship or citation networks).
This workshop aims to bring together researchers from a diverse range of areas to establish a new community focused on the application of social networking to analyze and improve scientific collaboration. There are two complementary areas of focus for this workshop 1) how to efficiently share information, infrastructure and software resources, such as data and tools through social networks, and 2) how to analyze and enhance scientific collaboration through implicit and explicit social networks, for example analyzing scientific impact through citation networks or improving collaboration by associating data and tools with networks of publications and researchers.

WORKSHOP SCOPE
The topics of interest are, but not limited to, the use of social networks to analyze and improve collaborative eScience:
  • The use of social networks and social networking concepts in eScience
  • Social network applications used for eScience
  • Social network based resource sharing and collaboration architectures
  • New forms of collaborative computing and resource sharing
  • Crowdsourcing of scientific applications using social media
  • Social Cloud computing
  • Novel applications of digital relationships and trust
  • Definition of novel principals, models and methodologies for harnessing digital relationships
  • Extraction of implicit social networks from scientific activities (e.g. publication, citation and grants)
  • Analysis of collaborative scientific activity through social networks

ABOUT SINCOM’12
---------------------
The International Workshop on Socially Intelligent Computing (SINCOM) provides a forum on the study, design, development and evaluation of the emergent intelligence that human-computer systems demonstrate. Socially intelligent computational systems bring together people and computers, support the creation of radically new forms of collaboration, communication and intelligence and allow the generation of new, emergent behaviors. Socially Intelligent Computing research is closely related to two
other areas of research: “social computing”, i.e. the design and use of information and communication technologies that consider social context; and to the field of “collective intelligence”, i.e. systems that facilitate the collective behavior of groups of individual actors – people, computational agents, and organizations – and exhibit intelligent characteristics such as perception, learning, judgment, or problem solving.

The International Workshop on Socially Intelligent Computing (SINCOM) addresses all technological aspects of socially intelligent computing, that span a variety of issues from advanced collaborative systems to using semantic technologies and the web of linked open data to support sociality in computational systems. The workshop aims to attract research that addresses either intra- and cross-enterprise settings  or uses intelligent computing infrastructures that exploit social media on the web. 8th International Workshop on Model-Driven and Agile Engineering for the Web (MDWE'12)
http://mdwe2012.pst.ifi.lmu.de

SHORT DESCRIPTION:
What will be the future of Web development? Web Engineering is a specific domain in which systematic development is needed and therefore approaches such as model-driven and agile development can be successfully applied. Existing model-based Web engineering approaches already provide methods and tools for the design and development of most kinds of Web applications. They address different concerns using separate models (navigation, presentation, workflows, etc.) and come with model compilers that produce most of the application?s Web pages and logic based on these models. In practice, however, most of these Web Engineering proposals do not fully exploit all the potential benefits of Model-driven Engineering (MDE), such as complete platform independence, metamodeling, and model transformations.

The MDE paradigm offers advantages such as technology independent models and (partially) automatic generation of applications, but also well-known problems as maintenance of the models. Thus, there are defenders of MDE and also defenders of alternative paradigms such as agile development processes. We want to raise a lively and constructive discussion on pro and cons, and how in practice we can benefit from both a MDE and an agile development process. Find some responses at the workshop!

Following the Internet trends, we want to focus the workshop on two main topics and how MDE and/or an agile process could help in the development, evolution and maintainability of social Web and social enterprise apps as well as multi-device, mobile and rich Web applications (RIAs).

1st International Workshop on User Interface Description Languages in Web Engineering (UIDL-WE'12)

SHORT DESCRIPTION:
The UIDL-WE workshop is aimed at investigating open research/development issues in the area of user interfaces of web applications based on a User Interface Description Language (UIDL). First, fundamental aspects need to be addressed in order to rigorously pave the way for a sound UIDL: models, meta-models, languages, and notations. Second, applied aspects of a UIDL should also be discussed in order to properly operationalize the UIDL:
(meta-)model editors, computer-aided software engineering, software support, rendering engines and code generators, but also requirements for industrial uptake, including case studies in real-world conditions and the investigation of factors that may determine acceptance by developers. Third, in order to ensure the quality of web applications for the end-users, some evaluation needs to be conducted in order to assess the quality of the application that can be derived by the UIDL, especially from the viewpoint of visual quality, usability, and efficiency.
