ICWE 2014 RESEARCH TRACKS
(further details at http://icwe2014.webengineering.org/main-tracks/)

* Cross-media and mobile Web applications
The modern Web use is nomadic and across various devices - often simultaneously - and the Web experience should be enjoyable, of high quality and consistent across all devices, regardless of the purpose, place and time of use. Such mobile, cross-device usage forces Web developers to evolve or re-invent their engineering methods and techniques to these new requirements and user demands. Web applications have to be tailored to deal with the constraints imposed by mobile technology such as small screens, low (and sometimes expensive) bandwidth, limited browser capabilities, different usage situations, cross- and multi-device use. Simultaneously, modern mobile devices offer a rich set of sensors, available through current Web browsers, allowing Web pages access to geo-location, NFC, and other sensor data, as well as tracking user identity across devices. Also, he rise of the app as an alternative for Web sites is a concern to be addressed to ensure a future, open Web.

* HCI and the Web
Most Web applications are conceived as interactive systems that aim at communicating with users. Users do not only consume information via the Web, but can also play an active role by contributing content (e.g., Web 2.0), get involved in the development process of Web applications (e.g., agile and user-centered design processes) and even conceive their own components by interacting with specialized tools (e.g., end-user development tools). In this context, there are many user roles involved in the socio-technical environment encompassing the development of Web applications. This track is devoted to the studies on user interface software and technologies that improve the relationship between users and Web applications. We welcome research focused on improving usability, accessibility, and user experience with Web applications, as well as user-centered design approaches that describe how Web technology and innovative design solutions can help users to better accomplish their tasks over the Web.

* Modeling and Engineering Web applications
The Modeling and Engineering Web applications track concerns principles, methods, notations, processes, approaches, and tools for supporting the development and evolution of high-quality Web applications in a more effective and efficient way. Model-driven approaches are of particular interest for addressing complexity, scalability, and maintainability of solutions for the development of Web applications, improving communication among participants of the development teams, and supporting the development of innovative tools and process. Furthermore, empirical and comparative studies of applying Web engineering methods and approaches, especially model-driven ones, are of particular interest.

* Quality aspects of Web applications
The development and usage of Web applications in different platforms and devices are continuously increasing. Web applications have become the most predominant form of software delivery today, with users and businesses choosing to rent or use software rather than buy it. The success of such applications depends on their capability to satisfy the customer needs. This has led to increased attention on quality models, processes and methods that facilitate understanding, evaluating, and especially improving the overall quality of products, processes and quality in use.

* Social Web applications
Social aspects are an integral part of todays Web, and the widespread use of the Web to connect, share and tap into collective knowledge provides a wealth of actionable data. The crowd can be deployed in various ways, i.e. the so-called crowdsourcing and human computation applications, and their generated data is valuable for developers, researchers and marketers alike. Successfully tapping into the crowds knowledge, and gathering, analyzing, and visualizing complex, heterogeneous social data, and putting it to good use are major current challenges.

* Web applications composition and mashups
Composition on the Web aims to integrate Web services, Web data sources and Web widgets into other Web services or Web applications. Mashups, and especially mashup tools with their modeling languages and instruments for mashup development, bring significant innovation as they tackle integration across the data, API and user interface layers; they aim at simplicity and ease of use rather than completeness of features and full expressiveness (compared to traditional Web programming languages and tools), but still they allow fairly sophisticated development tasks in a Web browser. Hereby, mashups represent an important and emerging strain of Web applications, with their own set of research challenges and opportunities.

Uncovering Deception in Social Media

A Special Issue in Springer Journal Social Network Analysis and Mining

Guest Editors: Huan Liu (ASU), Jiawei Han (UIUC), and Hiroshi Motoda
(Osaka University)

Social media is quickly arising as a new, popular form of media. Facebook,
Twitter, and LinkedIn are some examples of an inordinate number of social
media services that are loved and used by people of all walks of life for
various purposes such as sharing news, expressing opinions, documenting
thoughts, launching political campaigns, maintaining and developing
friendships or professional connection. Some key characteristics of social
media include low entry barrier, instant updates (thus, instant
gratification), large numbers of friends, open platform, and anonymity.
The last two properties make people comfortable to become users but also
make social media vulnerable to activities of ill intentions.

Deception in social media is an epitome of such activities. Deception is a
distortion with an intention to mislead users, analysts, organizations,
etc. A distortion can be about content, source, identity, age, sex, or
location, among many. Deception is encouraged or made easy by the unique
circumstances of social media. Deception is rampant in social media for a
wide range of reasons, being an innocent white lie or resulting in a dire
consequence where one?s job or life is at stake. Hence, it is important to
research deception in social media. It is necessary to uncover deception
in social media so that we can improve our awareness and confidence in
using social media, design and develop countermeasures to ?separate wheat
from chaff? to minimize negative impact of deception.
This special issue aims to identify issues of deception in social media,
review the state-of-the-art research on deception, offer a convenient
venue for sharing multi-disciplinary research findings, and identifying
pressing issues and future challenges.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following
* Forms of deceptions: disinformation, misinformation, honeypot accounts,
wiki-circularity, and impersonation
* Features associated with deceptions: linguistic features, interactive
features, etc.
* Sources of deceptions: adversaries, hoax, privacy related, white lies,
sites of special interests/design
* Handling deceptions: assessment, detection, prediction, and tracking
* Deception theories and practices: how extant social and psychological
theories can be adapted to social media study, new needs of social media
* Data for deception research: benchmarks, and data of good practice
* Performance evaluation: evolving nature of deception, ground truth, and
metrics
* Applications: Health, Cybersecurity, Online Search, Online
Advertisement, Online Communications,
* Related topics: provenance, trust, credibility, spam, gaming, and fraud

Special Issue on Trusting the Social Web - WWWJ

Posted on 07:25 by Unknown

Special Issue Call for Papers:

Trusting the Social Web

World Wide Web Journal
http://WWWJ.edmgr.com

Guest Editors:
Dr. Surya Nepal, CSIRO ICT Centre, Australia, Email: Surya.Nepal@CSIRO.AU
Dr. Cecile Paris, CSIRO ICT Centre, Australia Email: Cecile.Paris@CSIRO.AU
Prof. Athman Bouguettaya, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, Email: athman.bouguettaya@rmit.edu.au

Social media has increasingly become mainstream for a variety of purposes
ranging from online journalism (e.g., blogs), online knowledge base (e.g.,
Wikepedia), online marketing (e.g., Twitter), to keep in touch with friends,
family and professional colleagues online (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).
These technologies have given a birth of social media oriented Web, also
known as Social Web. The popularity of the Social Web is increasing
exponentially. It is reported that 66 percent of online adults are connected
to one or more social media platforms and 50 percent of them say they check
in to their favorite social media site first thing in the morning everyday.
This trend is likely to grow as the number of smartphones shipments is
expected to reach 1 billion by 2015 and the value of social commerce is
expected to reach 30 billion dollars within next five years. Similarly, 13
percent of digital news consumers follow the recommendations from Twitter
and FaceBook. Therefore, the Social Web is here to stay for the next decade
and will revolutionise the way we live right from communicating with our
family and friends to conducting businesses. In a nutshell, the Social Web
provides a unique platform for digitising our behavior which has enormous
potential to change the way we conduct ourselves.

The phenomenon of the Social Web has caught the attention of research
communities in the last decade. Researchers from diverse disciplines ranging
from social and behavior science to computer science have started looking at
the issues and challenges in the Social Web. Within computer science,
researchers from established research areas such as language technologies
and machine learning to emerging research areas such as service and cloud
computing have started looking at computational and development challenges
brought by Social Web. With the continued reports of breach of trust and
hoax news spreading from social media to mainstream news, trusting the
Social Web has become one of the major challenges that need to be addressed.
This special issue focuses on this challenge.

The Social Web provides a unique platform for sharing information and
knowledge for individuals as well as businesses.
As the Social Web is inherently open and free, it lacks the central control
or authority that asserts the trustworthiness of the people and content in
it. It is hard to distinguish what is rumor and what is truth. For example,
many statesmen/stateswomen (e.g., Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev,
Margaret Thatcher, etc) and celebrities (e.g, Lady Gaga, Eddie Murphy, etc.)
have witness their own death in the Social Web. This fake death news has
been filtered into the mainstream newspapers and televisions without much
scrutiny and verification due to the high competition of being the first to
report the news. On the flip side, Social Media plays a major role in
reporting political news (such as the Arab Spring) and natural disasters
(such as the Japan Tsunami and the New Zealand earthquakes), and it helps to
consolidate the global efforts towards them. Furthermore, people have
started relying on Social Web from travel to healthcare advice. Therefore,
it is important to address the issue of trust in the Social Web in order to
take full advantage of it for the betterment of human society. In the Social
Web, there are three essential entities that are involved in trust directly:
people, service providers and contents. In this special issue, we are
looking for innovative technologies and solutions from diverse disciplines
that address the issue of trust in the Social Web.

The topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited
to:

- Algorithms and protocol of establishing trust in the Social Web
- Propagation of trust/rumor in the Social Web
- Mechanisms of establishing credibility of people in the Social Web
- Provenance of content in the Social Web
- Privacy in the Social Web
- Analysis of trust in existing Social Web platforms
- Case studies

ACM RecSys 2012 Workshop on Recommender Systems and the Social Web

Posted on 10:05 by Unknown
CALL FOR PAPERS

4th Workshop on Recommender Systems & the Social Web
in conjunction with ACM RecSys 2012

Dublin, Ireland, September 9, 2012
http://ls13-www.cs.uni-dortmund.de/homepage/rsweb2012/

Submission Deadline: June 8, 2012

The exponential growth of the Social Web poses both challenges and new
opportunities for recommender systems research. The Social Web has turned
information consumers into active contributors creating massive amounts of
information. Finding relevant and interesting content at the right time and
in the right context is challenging for existing recommender approaches. At
the same time, social systems by their very nature encourage interaction
among users and with a variety of resources, thus generating new sources of
knowledge for recommender systems. Users of social media on the Web often
explicitly provide personal information or implicitly express preferences
through their interactions with other users or with resources (e.g. tagging,
friending, rating, commenting, etc.).

New application areas for recommender systems emerge with the popularity of
the Social Web. Recommenders can not only be used to sort and filter Web 2.0
and social network information, they can also support users in the
information sharing process, e.g., by recommending suitable tags during
folksonomy development. There are also opportunities for novel recommender
applications on the Social Web that directly involve humans in the
recommendation process, for example, users or groups making recommendations
to other users, or online multi-user games leading to recommendations.

These various new sources of knowledge can be leveraged to improve
recommendation techniques and develop new strategies which focus on social
recommendation. This social layer can also be used as evidence on which to
infer relationships and trust levels between users for recommendation
generation.

Recommender systems technologies can assist social systems through
increasing adoption and participation and sustaining membership. Through
targeted and timely intervention which stimulates traffic and interaction,
recommender systems technology can play its role in sustaining the success
of the Social Web.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researcher and practitioners
to explore, discuss, and understand challenges and new opportunities for
recommender systems and the Social Web. Original contributions are solicited
in all aspects of recommendation on the Social Web, including, but not
limited to the following areas:

* Social network and folksonomy development: Recommending friends, tags,
bookmarks, blogs, music, communities etc.
* Leveraging models of user behavior on the Social Web for recommendation
* Recommender systems mash-ups, intelligent user interfaces, rich media
recommender systems
* Collaborative knowledge authoring, collective intelligence
* Topic emergence and evolution on the Social Web and their role in
recommendation process
* Recommender applications involving users or groups directly in the
recommendation process
* Exploiting folksonomies, social network information, user interactions,
and communities in the recommendation process
* The role of context in Social Web recommendation
* Trust and reputation aware social recommendations
* Semantic Web recommender systems, use of ontologies or microformats
* Empirical evaluation of social recommender techniques
* Case studies and novel fielded social recommender applications
* Economy of community-based systems: Using recommenders to encourage users
to contribute and sustain participation
* Social recommender systems in the enterprise
* Recommendation for groups
