Call for Papers

Information Systems Engineering in Times of Crisis
http://delab.csd.auth.gr/caise2014/

Real-time information systems and overly complex financial products have been blamed as causes of recent financial crises. The IS Engineering community is treating such phenomena as challenges, to be addressed through research and improved practices. In particular, our community has begun to address the role of information systems in predicting, preventing, and reacting to crises of many different kinds: data-centric financial and fiscal dependency analysis of the globalized financial systems, resilience of critical infrastructures by information management, reaction to natural disasters such as fires, floods, earthquakes, etc. Due to the very nature of crises as unexpected events with broad and vast impact, IS Engineering challenges traditional wisdom and methodologies, as well as interactions between research and practice including stakeholders such as crisis victims.
CAiSE '14 will, as always, act as a forum of discussion that brings together researchers and practitioners in the field of IS Engineering. It will be the place to share mature research, ground-breaking ideas, and experience reports in our discipline.
CAiSE welcomes all submissions that fall in the domain of information systems engineering. This year, the conference extends a special welcome to papers that address the role of IS engineering in crisis situations. Four kinds of contributions are accepted: technical papers, empirical evaluation papers, reports of experience, and exploratory papers. Author Guidelines
Types of contributions. We invite four types of original and scientific papers:
Formal and/or technical papers describe original solutions (theoretical, methodological or conceptual) in the field of IS engineering. A technical paper should clearly describe the situation or problem tackled, the relevant state of the art, the position or solution suggested and the potential - or, even better, the evaluated - benefits of the contribution.
Empirical evaluation papers evaluate existing problem situations or validate proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e. by empirical studies, experiments, case studies, simulations, formal analyses, mathematical proofs, etc. Scientific reflection on problems and practices in industry also falls into this category. The topic of the evaluation presented in the paper as well as its causal or logical properties must be clearly stated. The research method must be sound and appropriate.
Experience papers present problems or challenges encountered in practice, relate success and failure stories, or report on industrial practice. The focus is on 'what' and on lessons learned, not on an in-depth analysis of 'why'. The practice must be clearly described and its context must be given. Readers should be able to draw conclusions for their own practice.
Exploratory Papers can describe completely new research positions or approaches, in order to face to a generic situation arising because of new ICT tools or new kinds of activities or new IS challenges. They must describe precisely the situation and demonstrate how current methods, tools, ways of reasoning, or meta-models are inadequate. They must rigorously present their approach and demonstrate its pertinence and correctness to addressing the identified situation.
Submission Conditions. Papers should be submitted in PDF format. The results described must be unpublished and must not be under review elsewhere. Submissions must conform to Springer's LNCS format and should not exceed 15 pages, including all text, figures, references and appendices. Submissions not conforming to the LNCS format, exceeding 15 pages, or being obviously out of the scope of the conference, will be rejected without review. Information about the Springer LNCS format can be found at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. Three to five keywords characterizing the paper should be indicated at the end of the abstract. The type of paper (technical/empirical evaluation/experience/exploratory paper) should be indicated in the submission.
Publication. Accepted papers will be presented at CAiSE'14 and published in the conference proceedings, which is published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). Authors elected best papers from the conference will be invited to submit an expanded version for publication in the journal, Information Systems.

Venue
Thessaloniki is the second largest city of Greece, with a population of 1.000.000 people. Apart from its landmark, the White Tower, the city boasts important historical sites, museums and cultural activities. It is also known as a cosmopolitan and commercial center, with exceptional nightlife in its famous Ladadika quarter. The music scene in the city is vibrant and diverse and includes nightclubs, dance halls, discos, cafes and music bars, jazz clubs and more, along with a wealth of live performances, both musical and theatrical. In addition to important Byzantine and Archaeological museums within the city, travellers can visit the Archaeological site of Vergina (the capital of ancient Macedonia). This is the venue of Phillip's tomb (the father of Alexander the Great), a site full of remarkable treasures of art and culture. Also within a short distance (45 minutes by car) one can visit mount Olympus (the mountain of the ancient Gods) where "Dion" the holy city of ancient Macedonia is located. For these and many other reasons, Thessaloniki is the cultural capital of northern Greece! CAISE'2014 will be hosted at the MET Hotel (http://www.themethotel.gr), located very close to the historic center of Thessaloniki, 17 km from "Macedonia" airport. A block of rooms has been reserved for the conference registrants.

Special Issue on Big Data in Business & Information Systems Engineering - BISE Journal (Wirtschaftsinformatik)

Posted on 09:45 by Unknown
Special Issue on Big Data
BISE Journal
Business & Information Systems Engineering
http://www.bise-journal.com/

Since Jim Gray started his huge astronomy project at Microsoft to proclaim the
age of data science in the late 1990s, this approach has proliferated to many
other areas beyond the natural sciences. In Information Systems, the 1990s saw
the analysis of historical data collected in data warehouses. Soon after, the
quasi real-time analysis of high-frequency trading in finance added the data
stream aspect to data mining. Search engines, web commerce, and social media
have added text mining, social network analysis, and heterogeneous data analysis
to the spectrum.

The buzzword "Big Data" nowadays characterizes analytical systems with extreme
data Volume, high data Variety, and rapid data generation Velocity. Even though
this buzzword is surely approaching its peak in the Gartner lifecycle, there are
many arguments why this trend will continue and even accelerate in the coming
years. The Internet of Things accelerates data generation by integrating
billions of sensors, the media spectrum is broadened by image, audio, and video,
and ever faster multicore and parallel computers produce ever more complex
simulation results that need to be administered and analyzed. This offers
numerous chances for business, public administration, and all kinds of sciences.
But intrinsically, it also increases dependency on systems and allows systems to
enter more and more deeply into areas of life that until very recently were
unquestionably private. Nationally and internationally, very many research
endeavours have begun to explore these new chances and challenges.

The planned special issue wants to contribute to the scientific debate
especially of the role of business information systems in this major societal
change. We desire contributions from research and practice e.g. on the following
themes:

* Strategic role of big data for competitiveness and service quality
* Empirical studies of the impact of big data
* Legal and regulatory aspects of big data
* Privacy-aware data mining
* Big data in specific aspects of business such as finance, marketing, logistics, etc.
* Big data in public sector services and government planning
* Big data und Cyberphysical Systems in business
* Data quality and Big Data
* Role of novel big data technologies such as stream mining, main memory databases, cloud computing, etc.
* Big data analysis of heterogeneous data sources

The emphasis of submissions should be on data-centric approaches; purely
model-centric methods, even if they work with large data sets, are not in the
focus of the special issue.

***** Submission Guidelines *****

Please submit papers for the sections BISE Research Paper and BISE State of
the Art by 2013-11-01 at the latest via the journal online submission system
(http://www.editorialmanager.com/buis/). Please observe the instructions
regarding the format and size of contributions to Business & Information Systems
Engineering (BISE)/WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK. Papers should not exceed 50,000
characters including spaces, minus 5,000 characters per page for
illustrations.
Detailed authors guidelines can be downloaded from http://www.bise-journal.org .
All papers will be reviewed anonymously (double-blind process) by several
referees with regard to relevance, originality, and research quality. In
addition to the editors of the journal, including those of this special focus,
distinguished national and international professionals with scientific and
practical backgrounds will be involved in the review process.

Complementary articles covering topics of this special focus are also more than
welcome. Accepted papers will appear identically in English and German.
The English-language version will appear in Business & Information Systems
Engineering (BISE), the German-language version will appear in
WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK.

CAiSE'13 Workshop - Sixth International i* Workshop (iStar'13)

Posted on 10:35 by Unknown

CALL FOR PAPERS
Sixth International i* Workshop (iStar'13)
Valencia, Spain, 17-21 June, 2013
Co-located with the 25th International Conference on Advanced
Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE'13).

www.cin.ufpe.br/~istar13

A growing number of groups around the world have been using the i*
modelling framework in their research on early requirements engineering,
business process design, organization modelling, software development
methodologies, and more. Following successful workshops in Trento
(2002), London (2005), Recife (2008), Hammamet (2010), and Trento (2011)
it is time for another meeting focusing on i*, GRL, Tropos, and related
frameworks, to exchange ideas, compare notes, and forge new collaborations.

We cordially invite you and members of your group to join us at the
Sixth International i* Workshop. The 2-day workshop will be held in
Valencia, Spain, 17-21 June, 2013, as a co-located event with the 25th
International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering
(CAiSE'13). Following a successful Tools Fair in iStar'11, we will be
accepting papers and demos concerning iStar-related tools.

FORMAT

The objective of the workshop is to share knowledge, stimulate
discussion and foster new lines of research and collaboration among
different groups.

To support these goals, we will schedule as much time for discussion as
for presentations - the actual time will depend on the final number of
accepted papers. For every accepted paper, we will assign one discussant
that will provide an initial position about the paper once presented,
and then discussion will follow. If the schedule allows, we plan to
include further occasions for discussion in the program, in addition to
the customary wrap-up session.

The program will also include a keynote talk.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Contributions should be 4-6 pages in LNCS format, describing current and
ongoing research related the i* framework. The contribution shall adhere
to the following structure:

- Title, authors, abstract
- Section 1. Introduction.
- Section 2. Objectives of the research.
- Section 3. Scientific contributions. If you have tool support, please
mention and describe it explicitly
- Section 4. Conclusions. Of particular interest are any assessments of
i* and related frameworks, including industrial experiences
- Section 5. Ongoing and future work
- References. Please restrict references to mainly your own work.

All submissions should be uploaded to easychair:
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=istar13

All submissions will be peer-reviewed and accepted works will be
published in the CEUR Workshop Proceedings Series.

TOOL SUBMISSIONS

The i* Workshop will include a slot for tool demos. The demos will
consist of a two-minute presentation of two slides (automatic transition
from one slide to the next will be enforced) and then the floor will be
opened for demos.

In order to submit a tool, fill out a form providing information about
your tool by creating a wiki page on the i* wiki
(http://istar.rwth-aachen.de/tiki-index.php?page=i*+Tools). If a page on
the wiki already exists for your tool, please update it as appropriate.
Contact istarwiki@dbis.rwth-aachen.de if you require a new user name and
password for the wiki.

Prepare a three page description of the tool, using LNCS format.
Descriptions should include a screen shot of the tool and should cover
the following points:

- Tool name and version
- Download information/availability
- Web page and documentation
- Goal modeling framework supported

Int. J. of Business Information Systems

Special Issue on: "Requirement Engineering Processes in Information Systems"

Guest Editors:
Dr. Saqib Saeed, Bahria University, Pakistan
Dr. Sameer Abufardeh, North Dakota State University, USA
Dr. Zaigham Mahmood, University of Derby, UK

Information systems (IS) play a crucial role in decision making by providing appropriate information storage, analysis and distribution support for managers. Most information system projects fail due to weak requirement engineering processes. Problems such as inadequate requirement elicitation, poor requirement analysis and negotiation processes and lack of appropriate requirement management practices hinder the realisation of effective information systems.

Furthermore, diversity in IS application areas has emphasised the need for innovative requirement engineering (RE) methodologies tailored to the needs of application domains. Traditional requirement engineering literature has mainly focused on bespoke development and market-driven requirement engineering has gained little attention.

The objectives of this special issue are twofold: (i) to invite ideas, suggestions and recommendations and publish high quality contributions examining the inherent issues in effective requirement engineering processes and (ii) to invite case studies and disseminate best practices employed by organisations, project managers and practitioners.

We intend to present contributions that will be useful and of interest to academicians from a range of fields including information systems, software engineering and system engineering.

Subject Coverage

We invite contributions with a special focus on computing discipline. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Market-driven requirement engineering (MDRE) vs. requirement engineering in bespoke systems
  • Requirement elicitation approaches for information system development
  • Quality in requirement engineering processes
  • Requirement engineering and software standards
  • Requirement triage and advanced requirement prioritisation techniques
  • Requirement analysis methodologies
  • Requirement traceability
  • Requirement management challenges
  • Ethnography and requirement elicitation
  • Requirement validation and verification mechanisms
  • Requirement specification approaches in practice
  • Relevant tools, frameworks and methodologies
  • Case studies

Special Issue on The Role of Information Systems in Enabling Open Innovation - JAIS

Posted on 03:44 by Unknown

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue
Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS)

The Role of Information Systems in Enabling Open Innovation

SPECIAL ISSUE CO-EDITORS

Eoin Whelan, National University of Ireland Galway, Ireland eoin.whelan@nuigalway.ie
Kieran Conboy, University of New South Wales, Australia k.conboy@unsw.edu.au
Kevin Crowston, Syracuse University, USA crowston@syr.edu
Lorraine Morgan, Lero, University of Limerick, Ireland Lorraine.morgan@ul.ie
Matti Rossi, Helsinki School of Economics, Finland matti.rossi@aalto.fi

The concept of open innovation advocates that in today’s increasingly boundary free world, organizations should seek to exploit inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation, and expand themarkets for external use of innovation (Chesbrough 2003). This open model of innovation challenges the traditional closed view, where invention and design is restricted to internal resources. Indeed, the past decade has witnessed a flurry of experimentation with different styles of open innovation in industries as diverse as consumer goods, semi-conductors, automotive engineering, and software engineering. IS has played a prominent role in creating the necessity for, and the implementation of, open innovation models. For example, the convergence of cheap personal computers, fiber optic cable, and powerful workflow software has been attributed to the “flattening” of the planet and the rise in global collaboration (Friedman 2006). Major corporations like IBM, GE, Boeing, and Proctor & Gamble have integrated online crowdsourcing platforms as part of their open innovation programs. Likewise, the open source software movement is also often viewed as a role model for openinnovation.

Yet, open innovation theory is not without controversy. Mowery (2009) questions whether open innovation is actually a new theory of innovation while Groen and Linton (2010) suggest that the conceptitself is a communication barrier to theory development. Trott and Hartman (2009) are even more forceful and argue that Chesbrough creates a false dichotomy by claiming that open innovation is the only alternative to a closed innovation model.

While open innovation may be a growing trend, it is clear that better theory is needed in order to extract the potential value it offers. IS has much to contribute to the development of this theory due to the pivotal role of digital technologies in enabling open innovation initiatives. However, the IS field has so far taken a very narrow perception of this important business paradigm. Within the open innovation movement, IS scholars have primarily directed their attention towards the Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) phenomenon (von Hippel and von Krogh 2003). While IS research has aided in refining and extending open innovation theory, through investigations of crowdsourcing platforms (Di Gangi and Wasko 2009; Leimeister 2009), web-enabled innovation brokers (Whelan et al. 2012), proprietary knowledge leakage (Teigland and Wasko 2003), open IS development (Conboy and Morgan 2011), and IT’s contribution to absorptive capacity (Chatterjee et al. 2002; Chircu and Kauffman 2000), studies in this vein have been sporadic over the past decade.

As open innovation is rapidly gaining importance in research and practice, new questions and challenges arise that require a deeper understanding of these phenomena from an IS perspective.  There is much that has yet to be understood about the role of IS in enabling open innovation, and the implications of open innovation movement on the various aspects of the IS discipline.  The aim of this special issue is to expandand advance the state of open innovation research within the IS field, highlighting work that makes significant theoretical and empirical advances to our understanding of IT enabled open innovation.

Example topics for the special issue
Papers are invited for the special issue on any topic related to the role of IS in enabling open innovation. Papers should be theory-driven or theory-building, with clear implications for further research and practice. Example topics include:
