Open PhD position @ Web Engineering Group, TU/e, The Netherlands

Posted on 10:48 by Unknown
Open 4-year PhD position @ Web Engineering Group, TU/e

We offer a 4-year full-time PhD research position in the WiBAF project (Within-Browser Adaptation Framework) situated on the crossroads of the Adaptive Hypermedia, Data Mining and User Modeling areas. The project is funded by the Data Science research center of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Netherlands.
The research will be conducted at the Information Systems Group, Department of Computer Science.

RESEARCH PROJECT AND TASK DESCRIPTION
Personalized information systems will undergo dramatic changes in the near future, caused in part by rising privacy concerns (and
legislation) and in part by the need to distribute the computation involved in generating recommendations and performing adaptation.

In Web-based information systems data mining techniques are applied to model user intent, preferences or current context and thus facilitate data-driven personalization. Such data-driven user modeling has been heavily used already in recommender systems that employ content-based and collaborative filtering, and in search engines with personalized or context-aware ranking of organic search results or ad placement.
In the area of personalization and adaptation of content, interaction and navigation, with applications in e.g. e-learning and e-culture, either hand-crafted adaptation rules or semantically rich databases have been used as the basis for deciding how to perform personalization.

The main objective for the PhD student in WiBAF project is to investigate how to bring these two currently distinct and to a large extent isolated approaches to personalization, i.e. purely hand-crafted and purely data-driven, together to perform within-site or even within-page adaptation based on both the analysis of user behavior and background knowledge of a certain domain.

One of the concrete targets is defining, studying and implementing a complete framework including a generic language for expressing adaptation and for generating client-side code that performs this within-browser adaptation, based on local client-side user model and global adaptation knowledge available at the server-side.

The framework should enable meta-adaptation which continuously adapts (updates) the adaptation process as user behavior changes.
This makes use of research into the topics of explore-exploit trade-off in adaptive information systems like recommenders, context-awareness and recurrent concept drift in data mining.

It is expected that the PhD candidate will be involved in the complete R&D cycles including theory, framework and techniques development; implementation of the software prototypes; and experimentation with real use cases that are facilitated by the industrial collaborator - Digital Innovations Lab of the Web analytics company Adversitement B.V.

February 15, 2013 Camera-Ready Submission: March 23, 2013
Registration: March 23, 2013
Workshop and CISIS main Conference: July 3 - 5, 2013

SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES

Despite a great potential and some initial successes, e-learning systems do
not yet have the impact that many believe is possible. Moreover, the gap
seems to be increasing because of the greater expectations of the current
generation (Digital Natives) who have grown up with modern technology. There
are also more general problems. In particular, an over-emphasis on cost
effectiveness has meant that content is often not as strong as it needs to
be and this deficiency has contributed to a lack of user engagement and some
high attrition rates. Studies have consistently highlighted the important
relationship between engagement and learning, with students who are highly
motivated being more likely to engage in the learning process.
The Second International Workshop ALICE 2012 aims at providing a forum for
innovative adaptive e-learning combining personalization, collaboration,
simulation and storytelling aspects within an affective/emotional based
approach able to contribute to the overcoming of the quoted limitations of
current e-learning systems and content. Special emphasis is given to
environments that are interactive, challenging and context aware while
enabling learners' demand of empowerment, social identity, and authentic
learning experience.
The expected contributions should be able to effectively involve learners in
educational, cultural and informative activities. Empirical results from
real users in real learning and training settings will be very valuable in
order to evaluate and discuss the impact of the proposed innovative
features. Academic researchers, professionals and practitioners are invited
to exchange their experiences and ideas about problems and solutions related
to the design, development and use of advanced and innovative, knowledge
based learning systems and applications. Researchers can report their ideas,
models, designs and experiences on the proposed topics.

Special Issue on Ubiquitous User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction - UMUAI

Posted on 01:57 by Unknown

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on Ubiquitous User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction: The Journal of Personalization Research (UMUAI)
*** Extended abstract submission deadline: March 1, 2013
*** Paper submission deadline (for accepted abstracts): July 15, 2012 UMUAI
Web site: http://www.umuai.org/

SCOPE
As ubiquitous and pervasive computing becomes a reality, there is both the opportunity and need to create a solid foundation for personalization research in this area. Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp) and Pervasive Computing are now synonymous for many, and represent a new model of computing in which computation is everywhere and computer functions are integrated into everything. For UbiComp, Weiser postulated that ``It will be built into the basic objects, environments, and the activities of our everyday lives in such a way that no one will notice its presence''. Such a model of computation will “weave itself into the fabric of our lives, until it is indistinguishable from it”. Everyday objects will be places for sensing, input, processing along with user output (Greenfield, 2006). In practice, this means the ubiquitous availability of many computing devices that are carried or embedded in our homes, cars, offices, in walls and tables, or worn as part of smart clothing. To realise this, we need to provide personalized services to users, individuals as well as groups, wherever they are and whenever they need it. Notably, UbiComp introduces the potential for context-aware personalisation. Context includes information from the person (physiological state), the sensed environment (environmental state), and computational environment (computational state) that can be provided to alter an applications behaviour.

Ubiquitous and Pervasive User Modelling (UPUM) has a key role to play in the visions for personalisation that are central to ubiquitous and pervasive computing. The large amounts of personal data that are increasingly being captured across each individual’s personal digital ecosystem have the potential to contribute to a user model, which, in turn, can drive personalised services. The multi-faceted challenges of achieving this have been recognised as critical for the progress towards ubiquity and pervasiveness. For example, Caceres and Friday, in reflecting on 20 years of research, point to the importance of dealing with issues such as pervasive ubiquitous data, support for users to control their own data and the personalisation based on it, particularly in terms of privacy, but also in ensuring people control their own smart environments.

Rapid technological changes, such as widespread smarter and cheaper devices providing personal sensing and services, has brought important progress in the field of UPUM. Many of these changes have occurred over the past seven years, since the previous UMUAI special issue on user modeling in UbiComp. It makes this a timely opportunity to call for an update of the state of the art in the field. Such updates can provide a critical review of what was central research then and is now on the periphery, or what new challenges and gaps have emerged or remained present. Overall, this issue will focus on the scientific challenges of ubiquitous user modelling in today’s dynamic environments.

This UMUAI special issue builds on recent activities in this area and is designed to solicit papers that report on recent significant advances, carry out innovative explorations, and establish foundations for further research. It interprets the notion of context broadly, as any additional conditions and circumstances beyond user profile and item content information that may affect user preferences for items.  It is intended to reflect the changes in the domain in the past seven years (since the previous special issue) and therefore, a wide range of topics are included. Those topics include (but are not limited to):

* Infrastructure for Ubiquitous User Modelling
* Information storage for easy access and reasoning
* Information fusion from multiple sources
* Standardization in user modeling
* Privacy as an infrastructure component
* Communicating user modeling data
 * Between user models and environments

SMAP 2012: 7th International Workshop on Semantic and Social Media Adaptation and Personalization

December 3-4, 2012, Luxembourg-city (Luxembourg)

http://www.smap2012.org

The Semantic and Social Media Adaptation and Personalization (SMAP) workshop is the evolution of the Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization initiative, which was founded during the summer of 2006 in an effort to discuss the state of the art, recent advances and future perspectives for semantic media adaptation and personalization. As social media applications have substantially transformed the way organizations, communities, and individuals interact, the scopes of the workshop are now extended towards this new trend, seeking to bring together researchers from the social web as well as from the semantic web communities, under the umbrella of the media adaptation and personalization domain.

After six successful workshops –in Athens, London, Prague, San Sebastian, Limassol and Vigo-, the SMAP workshop series has consolidated as a reference event in order to discuss about the newest advances in the field. The 7th SMAP workshop will be held in Luxembourg -city, Luxembourg. The 1-track, 2-day conference aims to provide a platform for exchanging fresh ideas and expertise, and for obtaining feedback on ongoing research. Proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Services (CPS).

SMAP 2012 is technically co-sponsored by IEEE Systems, Man, & Cybernetics Society. It is supported by the IEEE CIS Semantic Web Task Force and the IEEE-SMC Technical Committee on Intelligent Internet Systems. Personal Access to Cultural Heritage (PATCH 2012) @ UMAP 2012

Posted on 09:42 by Unknown

Call for Papers

4th International Workshop on Personal Access to Cultural Heritage (PATCH 2012)
http://patch2012.wordpress.com/

Co-located with the 20th conference on User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization (UMAP 2012)

Montreal, Canada, July 16-20, 2012

Background:
Cultural heritage (CH) has traditionally been a privileged area for personalization research. Visitors come to cultural heritage sites willing to experience and learn new things, usually without a clear idea of what to expect. CH sites are typically rich with objects and information, much more than the visitor can absorb during a limited time of a visit. The challenge is: can we provide an engaging experience for the ‘digital’, ‘mobile’ and ‘traditional’ museum visitors before, during and after a visit by exploiting information from previous interactions on CH sites and elsewhere on the ubiquitous Web. Further, an interesting problem to explore is can this kind of support be a basis for maintaining a lifelong chain of personalized CH experiences.

Personalization could improve the interaction and experience of visitors both on museum websites and with museum guide systems by supporting visitors' navigation and assisting them in quickly finding an appropriate starting point, and in discovering new relevant information. In this process, the museum systems consider visitors' personal characteristics, such as age, education, previous knowledge and experience (when available), together with the visitors’ behavior, in order to improve access to the collection and learning experiences, e.g. automatically adapting content presentation using user preferences and interest profiles collecting explicit user data from questionnaires or implicit data from monitoring visitors’ activities.

While currently various museum initiatives already invite people to engage with their collections online (e.g., Tate Modern, Powerhouse Museum), or reach out via Social Web platforms, e.g., Flickr the
Commons, Brooklyn Museum on Facebook, augmented reality browser of Netherlands Architecture Institute with Layar, personalization strategies for CH reside mainly in research projects and experiments, e.g., PEACH, INTRIGUE, Kubadji, PIL, CHIP,  and PrestoPrime, and focus mainly on ad-hoc, within-session or -visit personalization.

The workshop will aim at building a research agenda for personalization in CH where the abstract goal is to make the individual CH experience a link in a chain of a lifelong CH experience, where it is built on past experience, linked to daily life experience and provides the foundation for future experiences.

Montreal, Canada, July 16-20, 2012

http://www.comp.hkbu.edu.hk/~lichen/srs2012/

Social media sites have become tremendously popular in recent years. Yet,
the abundance and popularity of social media floods users with huge volumes
of information and hence poses a great challenge in terms of information
finding. Social Recommender Systems aim to alleviate information overload
for users by presenting the most relevant and useful information items.
Social recommender systems that suggest content (e.g., wikis and forum
posts), people, and communities often use personalization techniques to
adapt to the needs and interests of individual users, or a group of users.
This workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners around the
emerging topics of social recommender systems. We will review
state-of-the-art advances in the field and identify key challenges going
forward.

Topics of interests include, but are not limited to:

Social recommender technologies and applications User modeling techniques
and their impact on social recommender systems Recommendations for
individuals and communities and their applications Social recommender
systems in the enterprise Diversity and novelty in social recommender
systems

User interfaces in social recommender systems, especially in recommending
people and communities (SRS) Transparency and explanations in SRS Adaption
and personalization for SRS User feedback in SRS Trust and reputation in SRS
Social awareness and visualization
