THE 8TH INTERNATIONAL AAAI CONFERENCE ON WEBLOGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA (ICWSM-14)
SPONSORED BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

* Abstracts Due: January 15, 2014 (by 11:59 pm PST)
* Full Papers Due: January 22, 2014 (by 11:59 pm PST)
* Acceptance Notification: March 10, 2014
* Conference: June 1-4, 2014 in Ann Arbor, Michigan

The International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM) is a forum for researchers in computer science and social science to come together to share knowledge, discuss ideas, exchange information, and learn about cutting-edge research in diverse fields with the common theme of online social media. This overall theme includes research in new perspectives in social theories, as well as computational algorithms for analyzing social media. ICWSM is a singularly fitting venue for research that blends social science and computational approaches to answer important and challenging questions about human social behavior through social media while advancing computational tools for vast and unstructured data.

ICWSM, now in its eighth year, has become one of the premier venues for computational social science, and previous years of ICWSM have featured papers, posters, and demos that draw upon network science, machine learning, computational linguistics, sociology, communication, and political science. The uniqueness of the venue and the quality of submissions have contributed to a fast growth of the conference and a competitive acceptance rate of 20% for full-length research papers published in the proceedings by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).

For ICWSM-14, in addition to the usual program of contributed technical talks, posters and invited presentations, the main conference will include a selection of keynote talks from prominent social scientists and technologists. Building on successes in previous years, ICWSM-14 will also hold a day of workshops and tutorials in addition to the main conference.

SUMMARY SUBMISSION GUIDELINE

Full paper format: Full paper submissions to ICWSM are recommended to be 8 pages long, and must be at most 10 pages long, including figures and references. The final camera-ready length (between 8-10 pages) for each full paper in the proceedings will be at the discretion of the program chairs. All papers must follow AAAI formatting guidelines.
Poster and demo paper format: Poster paper submissions to ICWSM must be 4 pages long, including figures and references. Demo paper submissions to ICWSM must be 2 pages long, including figures and references. All papers must be follow AAAI formatting guidelines.

Anonymity: Paper submissions to ICWSM must be anonymized.

Social science track with only abstracts in the proceedings: We will be continuing the “social science” track at ICWSM-14 following its successful debut in 2013. This option is for researchers in social science who wish to submit full papers without publication in the conference proceedings. While papers in this track will not be published, we expect these submissions to describe the same high-quality and complete work as the main track submissions. Papers accepted to this track will be full presentations integrated with the conference, but they will be published only as abstracts in the conference proceedings.

ICWE 2014 AT A GLANCE
ICWE aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from various disciplines in academia and industry to tackle the emerging challenges in the engineering of Web applications and in the problems of its associated technologies, as well as the impact of those technologies on society and culture. The 14th edition of ICWE is centered around the theme of “Engineering the Web for users, developers and the crowd”, hereby highlighting the importance of all the different people that, somehow, participate in the development process of interactive Web applications and, ultimately, becomes the actors and the main users of the best practices and results of the research performed in the domain of the Web Engineering. ICWE 2014 is innovating with the introduction of six major research tracks: cross-media and mobile applications, HCI and the Web, modelling and engineering web applications, quality aspects of Web applications, social web applications, and Web applications composition and mashups. In addition to the six research tracks, ICWE 2014 also welcomes contributions as demos and posters, student papers to the PhD Symposium, tutorials and workshops, which will be subject of individual calls for papers. ICWE 2014 RESEARCH TRACKS
(further details at http://icwe2014.webengineering.org/main-tracks/)

* Cross-media and mobile Web applications
The modern Web use is nomadic and across various devices - often simultaneously - and the Web experience should be enjoyable, of high quality and consistent across all devices, regardless of the purpose, place and time of use. Such mobile, cross-device usage forces Web developers to evolve or re-invent their engineering methods and techniques to these new requirements and user demands. Web applications have to be tailored to deal with the constraints imposed by mobile technology such as small screens, low (and sometimes expensive) bandwidth, limited browser capabilities, different usage situations, cross- and multi-device use. Simultaneously, modern mobile devices offer a rich set of sensors, available through current Web browsers, allowing Web pages access to geo-location, NFC, and other sensor data, as well as tracking user identity across devices. Also, he rise of the app as an alternative for Web sites is a concern to be addressed to ensure a future, open Web.

* HCI and the Web
Most Web applications are conceived as interactive systems that aim at communicating with users. Users do not only consume information via the Web, but can also play an active role by contributing content (e.g., Web 2.0), get involved in the development process of Web applications (e.g., agile and user-centered design processes) and even conceive their own components by interacting with specialized tools (e.g., end-user development tools). In this context, there are many user roles involved in the socio-technical environment encompassing the development of Web applications. This track is devoted to the studies on user interface software and technologies that improve the relationship between users and Web applications. We welcome research focused on improving usability, accessibility, and user experience with Web applications, as well as user-centered design approaches that describe how Web technology and innovative design solutions can help users to better accomplish their tasks over the Web.

* Modeling and Engineering Web applications
The Modeling and Engineering Web applications track concerns principles, methods, notations, processes, approaches, and tools for supporting the development and evolution of high-quality Web applications in a more effective and efficient way. Model-driven approaches are of particular interest for addressing complexity, scalability, and maintainability of solutions for the development of Web applications, improving communication among participants of the development teams, and supporting the development of innovative tools and process. Furthermore, empirical and comparative studies of applying Web engineering methods and approaches, especially model-driven ones, are of particular interest.

* Quality aspects of Web applications
The development and usage of Web applications in different platforms and devices are continuously increasing. Web applications have become the most predominant form of software delivery today, with users and businesses choosing to rent or use software rather than buy it. The success of such applications depends on their capability to satisfy the customer needs. This has led to increased attention on quality models, processes and methods that facilitate understanding, evaluating, and especially improving the overall quality of products, processes and quality in use.

* Social Web applications
Social aspects are an integral part of todays Web, and the widespread use of the Web to connect, share and tap into collective knowledge provides a wealth of actionable data. The crowd can be deployed in various ways, i.e. the so-called crowdsourcing and human computation applications, and their generated data is valuable for developers, researchers and marketers alike. Successfully tapping into the crowds knowledge, and gathering, analyzing, and visualizing complex, heterogeneous social data, and putting it to good use are major current challenges.

* Web applications composition and mashups
Composition on the Web aims to integrate Web services, Web data sources and Web widgets into other Web services or Web applications. Mashups, and especially mashup tools with their modeling languages and instruments for mashup development, bring significant innovation as they tackle integration across the data, API and user interface layers; they aim at simplicity and ease of use rather than completeness of features and full expressiveness (compared to traditional Web programming languages and tools), but still they allow fairly sophisticated development tasks in a Web browser. Hereby, mashups represent an important and emerging strain of Web applications, with their own set of research challenges and opportunities.

Deadline Extension - 1st International Workshop on the Interplay between Conceptual Modeling and Human-Computer Interaction (CMHCI13)

Posted on 03:25 by Unknown

1st International Workshop on the Interplay between Conceptual Modeling and Human-Computer Interaction (CMHCI13)
in conjunction with
the 32nd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER2013)
November 11 – 13, 2013, Hong Kong

Workshop website: http://idlab.tlu.ee/cmhci/
Submission deadline: June 24, 2013 (Extended)

AIMS and SCOPE
Although there is a growing convergence of Software Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction approaches and values as far as Usability Evaluation is concerned, a remarkable distance still keeps Conceptual Modeling apart from Interaction Design. This workshop aims to build a body of applied knowledge on the increasingly relevant relation between Conceptual Modeling and Interaction Design.

Conceptual modeling techniques are relatively mature but in contrast, interaction design approaches still rely on natural language or impromptu notations to make explicit their inherent conceptual intricacies.

Further, there is considerable dichotomy between data modellers, who are focused on producing accurate models in a format suitable for machine processing, and interaction designers, who are primarily concerned with producing behaviour models in a format suitable for human consumption.
Nevertheless, the design and development process of these models potentially follows a similar process, which this workshop uses as a common ground between Conceptual Modeling and Human-Computer Interaction.

The aim of the workshop is thus to provide a platform for bringing together conceptual modeling and human computer interaction researchers and practitioners in an attempt foster the two way transfer of design and evaluation techniques across conceptual modeling and interaction design.

TOPICS
Contributions, preferably with case studies and empirical work could address, among other, the following issues:

Which conceptual modeling techniques are useful as the basis for interaction design and do such techniques support contemporary or emerging interaction design approaches?
How can existing conceptual modeling techniques be integrated with contemporary or emerging interaction design approaches?
Can interaction design approaches contribute towards better designed conceptual models?
How can interaction design evaluation practices be integrated with contemporary or emerging conceptual modeling approaches?
How can the design of a systems’ conceptual model influence the design of the system’s interaction with its users, and viceversa?
How can the evaluation of user interface prototypes support the improvement or customization of the underlying conceptual models?
SUBMISSION
The workshop is looking for two different types of submissions. In particular, we accept regular full papers (up to 10 pages), and posters (4 pages). All submissions should be formatted according to the Springer LNCS template http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0

Submission should be submitted through the EasyChair system: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cmhci13

All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two members of the program committee for originality, significance, clarity, and quality. Final versions of accepted submissions will be published, together with accepted submissions from other ER 2013 Workshops, as a single volume of Springer LNCS to be distributed at the ER 2013 conference.

CHI 2013 workshop on Engaging the Human-Computer Interaction Community With Public Policymaking Internationally

Posted on 02:10 by Unknown
Call for Papers
ACM-CHI 2013 Workshop on

"Engaging the Human-Computer Interaction Community With Public Policymaking Internationally"
http://chi2013.acm.org/

THEME
Public policies can come from governments (multi-national, national and regional), international bodies (the UN), and are often influenced by standards organizations (such as ISO and W3C). There is a complex cycle of influence between human-computer interaction and public policies. Public policies in the area of HCI include rules on how HCI research is performed, guidelines on how interfaces are designed (e.g. accessibility), and how research money is awarded in HCI. Goals of the workshop include increasing the number of documented examples of where public policy and HCI influence each other, and identifying areas where there is a need for research on public policy and HCI. Our long-term goal is to author a white paper on the topic of HCI and public policy.

For this workshop, we encourage the participation of people who have interest in the intersection of HCI and public policy. This can include people who perform research that could potentially influence policymakers, have experience interacting with policymakers, or have experience with international standards committees. For more information about the workshop, you can download the draft version of the extended abstract at: http://triton.towson.edu/~jlazar/CHI2013_policy.doc

Please submit a 3 page position paper, describing your interest and/or experience with public policy and HCI, and providing one specific example of where HCI community and policymakers have influenced each other (positively or negatively), that you want to expand upon in the workshop.

Position papers should be submitted to Jonathan Lazar (jlazar@towson.edu) by Jan 4, 2013. Accepted position papers will be posted on a shared workspace before the workshop, for participants to view. The author of each accepted position paper must attend the workshop and register for CHI2013.

Workshop co-organizers:
- Simone Barbosa, PUC-Rio, Brazil
- Jan Gulliksen, KTH – Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
- Jonathan Lazar, Harvard University and Towson University, USA

SouthCHI Workshop Serious Gaming und Gamification in Healthcare (WS-GSGHC 2013)

Posted on 03:05 by Unknown
Call for Papers

South CHI 2013
http://southchi.org/
Workshop for Gamification and Serious Games in Healthcare (WS-GSGHC)

Dates 01-03 July 2013
Maribor, Slovenia

The demographic change and the graying society is a global challenge for many countries around the world. Increasing numbers of old and frail people, limited numbers of caregivers and exploding costs in the health care system require new and innovative approaches to support care-givers,  care-recipients, as well as families. It is of uttermost importance that novel approaches do not only address the seniors as passive care-recievers but conceptualize them as active parts of the caring situation, supporting care requirments and actively overtaking responsibility for maintaining own health.
Using Serious Games and gamification proves a suitable tool to help people stay fit and healthy for longer, to support rehabilitation measures and to learn about illnesses, their prevention, their cure or successful strategies to cope with illnesses and maintain a quality of life. Still, games for health are not yet suitable for the mass market. It is not yet clear, how games for health can be made not only useful, but also enjoyable and fun and accepted by people of all genders, ages, education levels and technology experience.
The workshop is intended for researchers, industry and practitioners from various domains working in areas from healthcare to gerontology, who use or want to use serious games and gamification. Primary goal of the workshop is to present state-of-the-art research and to build and intensify a network of researchers and practitioners. Topics that can be discussed during the workshop range from new and innovative approaches for rehabilitation, motivation to prevent illnesses, using games for educating medical professionals, acceptance of games in healthcare and usability of these games.
The workshop is intended as a meeting-point for researchers and practitioners from different backgrounds and disciplines who work in the area of healthcare and apply methods from serious gaming and gamification. The workshop should bring together gerontologists, computer scientists, physicians, as well as psychologists, sociologists and ethicists to discuss the possibilities, limitations and consequences of games and gamification in healthcare.
Submissions:
Should be original and not submitted and/or published in other journals or conferences. There is a peer-review procedure intended, thus workshop committee members, external reviewers as well as potential authors will review the submissions. Papers selected by the Workshop Committee will be presented at the workshop and afterwards published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Series.
Format:
Papers should be 8 to 12 pages long including all figures and references.
The format should be according to the LNCS format and submitted to the conference system as a single PDF file. Submissions must be fully anonymous, with no author names, affiliations acknowledgements, or obvious references. The submission should begin with a title, abstract and a list of key words.
Deadlines:
All paper should be submitted no later than January 18th 2013 via the SouthCHI conference website.
Notification will be given no later than February 8th 2013.
