VLDB 2013 Cloud Intelligence Workshop (Cloud-I 2013)

Posted on 04:43 by Unknown
2nd International Workshop
on Cloud Intelligence (Cloud-I 2013)
In conjunction with VLDB 2013, Riva del Garda (Trento), Italy
August 26, 2013

http://eric.univ-lyon2.fr/cloud-i/
Contact email: cloud-i@eric.univ-lyon2.fr

***************
CALL FOR PAPERS
***************

With the increasing success of cloud computing, cloud business
intelligence "as a service" offerings have sparkled widely, both from
cloud start-ups and major BI industry vendors. Beyond porting BI features
into the cloud, which already implies numerous issues (e.g., BigData/NoSQL
database modeling and storage, data localization, security and privacy,
performance, cost and usage models...), this trend also poses new, broader
challenges for making data analytics available to small and medium-size
enterprises (SMEs), non-governmental organizations, web communities (e.g.,
supported by social networks), and even the average citizen; this vision
presumably requiring a mixture of both private and open data.

The aim of the Cloud-I workshop is to become an interdisciplinary, regular
exchange forum for researchers, industry and practitioners, as well as all
potential users of Cloud Intelligence. The submission of research,
industrial, position, visionary, survey and student papers are encouraged
to fuel up the discussion.

The 2nd International Workshop on Cloud Intelligence (Cloud-I 2013) will
be collocated with the 39th International Conference on Very Large
Databases (VLDB 2013). Proceedings will be published in ACM ICPS. The best
accepted papers will also be invited to submit extended versions to a
special issue of Information Systems.

The topics of the Cloud-I workshop include, but are not limited to, the
following list.

June 27-July 2, 2013, Santa Clara Marriott, CA, USA
(Center of Silicon Valley)

Sponsored by the Technical Committee on Services Computing (TC-SVC),
IEEE Computer Society

Services account for a major part of the IT industry today. Companies increasingly
like to focus on their core expertise area and use IT services to address all their
peripheral needs. Services Computing is a new science which aims to study and better
understand the foundations of this highly popular industry. It covers the science

Review Policy

IEEE Policy and professional ethics require that referees treat the contents of papers under
review as privileged information not to be disclosed to others before publication. It is
expected that no one with access to a paper under review will make any inappropriate use of
the special knowledge, which that access provides. Contents of abstracts submitted to
conference program committees should be regarded as privileged as well, and handled in the
same manner. The Conference Publications Chair shall ensure that referees adhere to this
practice.

Organizers of IEEE conferences are expected to provide an appropriate forum for the oral
presentation and discussion of all accepted papers. An author, in offering a paper for
presentation at an IEEE conference, or accepting an invitation to present a paper, is
expected to be present at the meeting to deliver the paper. In the event that circumstances
unknown at the time of submission of a paper preclude its presentation by an author, the
program chair should be informed on time, and appropriate substitute arrangements should be
made. In some cases it may help reduce no-shows for the Conference to require advance
registration together with the submission of the final manuscript.

ACIS presentation - Today's Top "RESTful" Services and Why They Are Not RESTful

Posted on 03:04 by Unknown
Last week my colleague Dominik Renzel gave a presentation on our paper "Today's Top 'RESTful' Services and Why They Are Not RESTful" at the WISE 2012 conference in Phaphos, Cyprus.

Abstract. Since Fielding’s seminal contribution on the REST architecture style in 2000, the so-called class of RESTful services has taken off to challenge previously existing Web services. Several books have since then emerged, providing a set of valuable guidelines and design principles for the development of truly RESTful services. However, today’s most popular ”RESTful” services adopt only few of these guidelines, resulting in overburdening developers integrating multiple services in mashup applications. In this paper we present an in-depth analysis for the top 20 RESTful services listed on programmableweb.com against 17 RESTful service design criteria found in literature. Results provide evidence that hardly any of the services claiming to be RESTful is truly RESTful, probably due to the lack of rigidness and ease-of-use of currently available decision criteria. To improve the situation, we provide recommendations for various stakeholder groups.

WI'12 provides a leading international forum to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse fields, to increase the cross-fertilization of ideas and explore the fundamental roles, interactions as well as practical impacts of Artificial Intelligence engineering and Advanced Information Technology on the next generation of Web systems.

Here AI-engineering is a general term that refers to a new area, slightly beyond traditional AI: brain informatics, human level AI, intelligent agents, social network intelligence and classical areas, such as knowledge engineering, knowledge representation, planning, knowledge discovery and data mining are examples.  Advanced Information Technology includes wireless networks, ubiquitous devices, social networks, data/knowledge grids, as well as service oriented architecture, cloud computing.

Web Intelligence has been recognized as one of the most important as well as promising direction for scientific research and development in the era of Web and agent intelligence to bring in the next generation Web systems.  The IEEE/WIC/ACM WI-IAT 2012 joint conferences
(WI-IAT'12) will co-locate with AMT'12, BI'12, and ISMIS'12 as a Congress, a Special Event of the Alan Turing Year (Centenary of Alan Turing's birth).  The Congress will have a joint opening, keynotes, reception and banquet.

The topics and areas include, but not limited to:
1) Web Intelligence Foundations
2) World Wide Wisdom Web
3) Web Information Retrieval and Filtering
4) Knowledge Grids and Grid Intelligence
5) Semantics and Ontology Engineering
6) Intelligent Human-Web Interaction
7) Web Mining and Farming
8) Social Networks
9) Ubiquitous Intelligence
10) Web Agents
11) Web Services
12) Web Support Systems
13) Intelligent E-Technology

High-quality papers in all WI related areas are solicited.  Paper submissions should be limited to a maximum of 8 pages in the IEEE 2-column format.  The same format will be used for final camera-ready papers (see the Author Guidelines at http://www.computer.org/portal/web/cscps/formatting).

All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance, significance, and clarity.

Note that WI'2012 will accept ONLY on-line submissions in PDF format. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press that is indexed by EI.
