OVERVIEW

The 5th workshop on Pervasive Collaboration and Social Networking (PerCol) addresses the research field at the intersection of pervasive computing and social computing. We are interested in various types of human-to-human interaction with pervasive devices like mobile social networking, crowdsourcing, collaborative apps, location-based games or interaction with public displays. While this is an application-driven research field, we also welcome research on the foundations of Pervasive Social Computing like middleware and development methods, rich presence, pervasive social context, social signal processing and robust and energy-efficient communication in the pervasive scenario.

-    Energy efficient and mobile enabled protocols

PAPER SUBMISSION

Submitted papers must be unpublished and not considered elsewhere for publication. Also, they must show a significant relevance to the workshop topics of pervasive collaboration and social networking. All papers should be in the IEEE format. Papers should be no more than 6 pages in length. All papers will be managed electronically through EDAS. Submitted papers will undergo a rigorous review process handled by the Technical Program Committee. Accepted papers will appear in the PerCom 2014 Workshops proceedings published by IEEE Computer Society Press.

The general theme of MDM 2014 will be "Mobile and Social Big Data"

The MDM series of conferences, since its debut in December 1999, has
established itself as a prestigious forum for the exchange of innovative and
significant research results in mobile data management. The term mobile in
MDM has been used from the very beginning in a broad sense to encompass all
aspects of mobility - aspects related to wireless, portable and tiny
devices. The conference provides unique opportunities for researchers,
engineers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore new ideas,
techniques, and tools, and to exchange experiences.

The general theme of MDM 2014 will be "Mobile and Social Big Data".
We invite submissions of original research contributions and industrial
papers as well as proposals for demos, panels and workshops.

A number of events (workshop, demos, panels, seminars, PhD forum, and
special industrial forum) will be organized to cater for all academic
activities, apart from research track activities.

### Scope ###

Over the last two decades, many organizations and individuals have relied on electronic collaboration between distributed teams of humans, computer applications, and/or autonomous robots to achieve higher productivity and produce joint products that would have been impossible to develop without the contributions of multiple collaborators. Technology has evolved from standalone tools, to open systems supporting collaboration in multi-organizational settings, and from general purpose tools to specialized collaboration grids. Future collaboration solutions that fully realize the promises of electronic collaboration require advancements in networking, technology and systems, user interfaces and interaction paradigms, and inter operation with application-specific components and tools.

### Paper Submission ###

We invite original research papers that have not been previously published and are not currently under review for publication elsewhere. Contributions addressing all areas related to collaborative networking, technology and systems, and applications are solicited. The submitted manuscript should closely reflect the final paper as it will appear in the Proceedings. Submitted papers should be 10 pages in two-column IEEE proceeding format. The papers can be submitted in regular track or Industry/Application track.

### Workshops Proposals ###

Proposals for half-day or full day workshops that focus on CollaborateCom 2013 related themes are solicited. Workshop proposals should be at most five pages, including a biographical sketch of each instructor, and submitted to the Workshop Chairs. Proposals will be evaluated based on the expertise and experience of the organizers and the relevance and importance of the subject matter. Please refer to call for workshop proposals for details.

### Panels Proposals ###

Proposals for panel discussions that focus on future visions for collaborative networking, applications, and work sharing are preferred. Potential panel organizers should submit a panel proposal of at most five pages, including biographical sketches of the proposed panelists to the Panel Chairs.

### Tutorials Proposals ###

Proposals for full and half-day tutorials are solicited. Tutorials are intended to enhance the technical program, and as such they should be relevant to collaborative computing, networking, worksharing, and applications. Potential tutorial presenters should submit a tutorial proposal of at most three pages, including: description of potential audience and background knowledge expected from the audience, if any; tutorial description; biographical sketch of presenter(s).

Introduction:
Recent rapid advances in mobile cellular networks and telecommunications
have introduced Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks as an interesting topic
to the research community, one that has started to receive much attention
from practitioners, scholars, and the general public. An opportunistic
mobile social network can be described as a platform that provides services
via hand-held and wireless devices, mainly for the purpose of fostering and
maintaining social interactions and connections. Therefore, an opportunistic
mobile social network can be considered a form of social network where
services are provided with mobility as an added value. Thanks to mobility,
many emergent applications related to social networking are now available
for individuals, business enterprises, and governments.

Objective:
The main goal of this book is to collect the recent development on
theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the opportunistic mobile social
networks. This book will be of particular value to academics, researchers,
practitioners, government officials, business organizations (e.g.,
executives, marketing professionals, resource managers, etc.), and even
customers -- working, participating, or those interested in fields related
to social networks. The content of the book will be especially useful for
students in areas like social networks, informatics, wireless networks, data
mining, and administrative sciences and management, but also applies to
students of education, economy, or law, who would benefit from the
information, cases, and examples therein.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Part I: Social Networks and Complex Networks
* Part II: Opportunistic Networks
* Part III: Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks
* Part IV: Applications

Submission Procedure:
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on February 15, 2013, a
2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his
or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by
March 1, 2013 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter
guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 1, 2013. All
submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Publisher:
This book is scheduled to be published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group.
The Work will be published initially under the imprint of Taylor & Francis,
a CRC Press book, or such other imprint as the Publisher deems suitable for
the Work. For additional information regarding the publisher, please
visit?www.crcpress.com. This book is anticipated to be released in 2014.

ANT 2013 will be held in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. Halifax is located on the far eastern coast of Canada and is approximately a 6-hour flight from London, UK and a 2-hour flight from Toronto, Ontario. Halifax is a vibrant and modern city which is home to multiple academic institutions and where visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment from whale watching to Jazz festivals to world-class cuisine. Halifax is also home to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic which contains the world largest collection of Titanic artifacts. Nova Scotia is a picturesque province with many National and Provincial parks, and as stated in the Guinness Book of World Records, has the highest tides in the world.

USC Information Sciences Institute has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist on a project exploring theoretical and computational foundations of social network analysis with applications to social media analysis. Successful candidate is expected to be proficient in both analytic and computational methods applicable to large scale data. Candidate should have a strong mathematical background in the area of graph theory or network analysis and experience with statistical analysis of large-scale data. The candidate will be expected to apply the methods developed over the course of the projects to real-world social, biological, and other networks. A PhD in computer science, statistics, or mathematics and two or more years of post
graduate studies are required.

Learning Analytics in a Mobile World - A Community Information Systems Perspective

This is the presentation I gave in the eMadrid Seminar Series. Thanks to Carlos Delgado Kloos and all the people at Universidad Carlos III of Madrid in Leganes. Because the presentation have been viewed so often now, I decided the make a quick walk through at least the first couple of slides which present our theoretical approach to learning analytics. Learning Analytics has become a hot topic in the technology enhanced learning community and a lot of research groups are contributing to the field in the moment. Our perspective on learning analytics is on learning communities. Essentially, we - the Advanced Community Information Systems group at RWTH Aachen (slide 5) - think that self-regulated learning processes are embedded in community-regulated learning processes (slide 6). We think, that learning media have a great influence on learning processes since knowledge is not media-independent. From this perspective, we try to develop social learning theories like communities of practice by Etienne Wenger (slide 7) into media-specific knowledge creation theories. To cross the gap between the observation of network of media artifacts and the evidence of social learning processes taking place we deploy a set of methods, among others social network analysis (slide 8). To guide our research we build concrete learning environments but also gather media artifacts in a repository enabling cross-community and cross-media analysis. This repository is called the MediaBase (slide 11). In our most recent research we connect our learning environments and the MediaBase by a new new community monitoring approach called MobSOS (slide 10). MobSOS is able to combine quantitative data and qualitative data for comprehensive insights into community activities. This is reached by conceptualizing the community learning process as a socio-technical learning process (slide  9). We are validating our approach in a lot of ongoing EU funded research projects in the area of technlogy enhanced learning.

Abstract:

With the increasing availability of smart phones and tablets as well as growing mobile bandwidth, mobile learning offers by the means of apps and electronic books become a commodity. In this presentation I motivate by examples that professional communities need learning support beyond the commodity level. Learning analytics in such settings is more than simple assessment strategies but needs a deep understanding of interactions between learners and systems, learner and learning resources as well as learners among each others. Such a perspective is delivered by community information systems serving the needs of mobile communities. The meaningful combination of quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies supports the understanding of learner goals, learning processes and community reflection. Case studies from ongoing EU research projects like ROLE, GALA and TELMAP will support the argumentation.
