Call for Papers

The IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Network
Analysis and Mining (ASONAM) provides a premier interdisciplinary
forum to bring together researchers and practitioners from all social
networking analysis and mining related fields for presentation of
original research results, as well as exchange and dissemination of
innovative, practical development experiences. ASONAM 2014 seeks to
address important challenging problems with a specific focus on the
emerging trends and industry needs associated with social networking
analysis and mining. The conference solicits experimental and
theoretical findings along with their real-world applications.

General areas of interest to ASONAM 2014 include the design, analysis
and implementation of social networking theory, systems and
applications from information science, mathematics, communications,
business administration, sociology, psychology, anthropology, applied
linguistics, biology and medicine. More specialized topics within

Paper Submissions

Papers reporting original and unpublished research results pertaining
to the above topics are solicited. The papers will reviewed by a
minimum of two subject experts. Full paper manuscripts must be in
English with a maximum length of 8 pages using the IEEE CPS two-column
template. Papers should be submitted to the Conference Web site:

retain the copyright for accepted papers and the IEEE copyright form
found at

will therefore have to be completed. Papers will be accepted for the
conference based on the reviewers comments on their originality,
timeliness, significance, relevance, and clarity of presentation. If
the paper is accepted, the paper will appear in the proceedings of the
conference if one author presents the paper at the conference and at
least one author register as a full conference participant.

Publications
************

Accepted and presented papers will be included in the ASONAM 2014
Conference Proceedings and forwarded for inclusion in IEEE Computer
Society Digital Library (CSDL), IEEE Xplore and the ACM Digital
Library. The conference proceedings will be submitted for EI indexing
through INSPEC by the IEEE.

The study of social networks originated in social and business communities. In recent years, social network research has advanced significantly; the development of sophisticated techniques for Social Network Analysis and Mining (SNAM) has been highly influenced by the online social Web sites, email logs, phone logs and instant messaging systems, which are widely analyzed using graph theory and machine learning techniques. People perceive the Web increasingly as a social medium that fosters interaction among people, sharing of experiences and knowledge, group activities, community formation and evolution. This has led to a rising prominence of SNAM in academia, politics, homeland security and business. This follows the pattern of known entities of our society that have evolved into networks in which actors are increasingly dependent on their structural embedding.
The international conference on Advances in Social Network Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2013) will primarily provide an interdisciplinary venue that will bring together practitioners and researchers from a variety of SNAM fields to promote collaborations and exchange of ideas and practices. ASONAM 2013 is intended to address important aspects with a specific focus on the emerging trends and industry needs associated with social networking analysis and mining. The conference solicits experimental and theoretical works on social network analysis and mining along with their application to real life situations.

Papers reporting original and unpublished research results pertaining to the above topics are solicited. New full paper submission deadline is April 15, 2013. These papers will follow an academic review process. Full paper manuscripts must be in English with a maximum length of 8 pages (using the IEEE two-column template). Submissions should include the title, author(s), affiliation(s), e-mail address(es), tel/fax numbers, abstract, and postal address(es) on the first page. Papers should be submitted to the Conference Submission System. If Web submission is not possible, manuscripts should be sent as an attachment via email to ozyer@etu.edu.tr by April 15, 2013. The attachment must be in PDF or Word .doc format.

Objectives:
The objective of this workshop is to provide a venue for researchers of all domains (IE/IR, Web mining etc.) where the temporal dimension opens up an entirely new range of challenges and possibilities. The workshop's ambition is to help shaping a community of interest on the research challenges and possibilities resulting from the introduction of the time dimension in Web analysis.

TempWeb focuses on temporal data analysis along the time dimension for Web data that has been collected over extended time periods. ABSTRACT: Conferences play an important role in scientific community building, and in cooperation and dissemination related to Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). In this article we analyze the communities of five major conferences in TEL, including ICALT, ECTEL, ICWL, ITS, and AIED, with the aim of understanding the development patterns of these TEL communities. This is achieved through social network analysis and time series analysis applied to the co-authorship and citation networks of these conferences. In addition, we compare the development pattern of TEL conference communities to benchmarks drawn from long-established and highly successful conferences on database research. The analyses of the social network parameters of the conference communities generated several insights. We found that TEL conferences exhibit a mixed development pattern of young, emerging conferences that are still in the process of developing their communities. We also found that the more interdisciplinary conferences in our data set exhibited a slower rate of community development compared to those conferences with more focused topics. Regarding the practical implications of these findings, we have offered some recommendations to different stakeholders including conference chairs and key authors.

Introduction

People now live in heterogeneous social communities within cyber-physical spaces - both online communities and social networks where digital content is exchanged, and ad hoc physical communities that exploit opportunistic relationships between pairs of networked devices to exchange content.  These communities have distinct technical features which lead to distinct kinds of interaction - such as patterns of comments and likes in online communities and co-location in ad hoc communities, or issues of friendship, trust and influence in online communities and social popularity and movement patterns in ad hoc communities. Rather than viewing online communities and ad hoc communities as competing, we see them as complementary and suggest that cross-community mining (CCM) can connect these two communities by revealing hidden knowledge about the interplay between different communities and patterns of social interaction within and between them. This theme issue of Personal and Ubiquitous Computing provides the opportunity for researchers and product developers to review and discuss the state-of-the-art and trends of CCM techniques and applications. Papers on theoretical, practical, methodological issues in Cross-Community Mining are welcome.

The emergence of ubiquitous computing has started to create new environments
consisting of small, heterogeneous, and distributed devices that foster the
social interaction of users in several dimensions. Additionally, the
upcoming social semantic web also integrates the user interactions in social
networking environments. Mining in ubiquitous and social environments is
thus an emerging area of research focusing on advanced systems for data
mining in such distributed and network-organized systems. It also integrates
some related technologies such as activity recognition, Web 2.0 mining,
privacy issues and privacy-preserving mining, predicting user behavior, etc.

In typical ubiquitous settings, the mining system can be implemented inside
the small devices and sometimes on central servers, for real-time
applications, similar to common mining approaches. However, the
characteristics of ubiquitous and social mining are in general quite
different from the current mainstream data mining and machine learning.
Unlike in traditional data mining scenarios, data does not emerge from a
small number of (heterogeneous) data sources, but potentially from hundreds
to millions of different sources. As there is only minimal coordination,
these sources can overlap or diverge in any possible way. Steps into this
new and exciting application area are the analysis of this new data, the
adaptation of well known data mining and machine learning algorithms and
finally the development of new algorithms.

GOALS AND AUDIENCE
==================
The goal of this workshop is to promote an interdisciplinary forum for
researchers working in the fields of ubiquitous computing, social semantic
web, Web 2.0, and social networks which are interested in utilizing data
mining in an ubiquitous setting. The workshop seeks for contributions
applying state-of-the-art mining algorithms on ubiquitous and social data.
Papers focusing on the intersection of the two fields are especially
welcome. In short, we want to accelerate the process of identifying the
power of advanced data mining operating on data collected in ubiquitous and
social environments, as well as the process of advancing data mining through
lessons learned in analyzing these new data.

(but not limited to them)
* Short position papers in any of the topics of interest of the workshop
(but not limited to them)

Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and selected on the basis of these
reviews. Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop.

Format requirements for submissions of papers are: Maximum 16 pages,
including title page and bibliography for technical papers. Maximum 8 pages,
including title page and bibliography for short position papers.

Detecting Overlapping Communities in Facebook with NodeXL

For the initial public offering of Facebook, I re-publish and extend the main outcomes of this RWTH Aachen  master thesis of my student Arber Ceni  in computer science under my supervision.  Supervision was jointly done with  Marc Smith from Connected Action and  Bernie Hogan from Oxford Internet Institute.

Overlapping vs. Non-overlapping Community Detection

Arber has implemented an importer of Facebook data in NodeXL together with two state-of-the-art algorithms for overlapping community detection, i.e. MONC and SPLA.
The visualization is nicely done. Each node is a pie chart where colors code the percentage of community belonging. You can download and install the importer for free.

Overlapping communities are present in social network sites like Facebook. A Facebook user is on average member of seven communities (paper, slides). Computer scientists and social scientists are interested in analyzing communities. They can detect e.g. formation of trends and voter behavior in the data sets or make use of them for personalized advertisement and stock data. Also for system design data can be used for e.g. system optimization.

Overlapping community detection algorithms (OCDA) are a recent further development of community detection algorithms (CDA). CDA always detect disjoint communities in network data, i.e. each node in the network belongs to exactly one community. A community here is defined sloppily as a more dense sub-network with more intracommunity than intercommunity connections. Because of the fact that in real networks disjoint community membership is extremely rare, OCDA have been proposed.

Some good candidates for OCDA are the following:

K-clique percolation method
+ The first algorithm to detect overlapping communities
+ Yields good results
- Different results for different k
- Doesn't have a good time complexity and fails to analyze large networks

GCE
+ It is fast and accurate
+ Yields the best results on LFR benchmark graphs
+ Able to detect non-overlapping communities
- Needs to specify parameters
- Not good results when nodes don't belong to the same number of communities

MONC
+ Time complexity of only O(n2)
+ Uncovers the whole hierarchical structure of the network in a single run
+ Saves time due to merging of communities
+ The core of the algorithm is free of parameters
- Requires three parameters on the post-processing phase
- The complexity is not proven to be O(n2)

SPLA
+ Has a time complexity of only O(Tn), where T = 100
+ Best results on LFR benchmarks
+ Performs well and is very stable over different ranking criteria
+ Can be easily modified to accommodate different speaker/listener rules
+ Can be used to detect fuzzy and crisp overlapping communities.
- Needs a parameter r

Paper submission

Submitted papers should be original and contain contributions of theoretical, experimental or application nature, or be unique experience reports.

Papers must be submitted within the stipulated time and electronic submission in PDF is required.
The page limit for a full-length paper is 6 pages.
Short papers describing novel research visions, work-in-progress or less mature results are also welcome, with a minimum limit of 4 pages.

Note: Papers less than 4 pages will not be reviewed and may be rejected outright!

All submissions should be in the IEEE 8.5 two-column format. Papers should contain up to 5 keywords.
Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and soundness, and will be reviewed by at least three independent reviewers.

The authors of the accepted papers will be allowed to make a correction in accordance with the suggestions of the reviewers and submit final camera-ready papers within the stipulated deadline.
