Special Issue on "Propagation Phenomenon in Complex Networks: Theory and Practice" - New Generation Computing

Posted on 08:10 by Unknown

Special Issue CALL FOR PAPERS on New Generation Computing
Deadline for submissions: 30 Sep 2013

*Title: “Propagation Phenomenon in Complex Networks: Theory and Practice”

New Generation Computing appears in the ISI Journal Citation Reports with Impact Factor of 0.941.

*Guest editor: Dariusz Krol, Bournemouth University (United Kingdom)

*Scope and aim of the Special Issue
Propagation and particularly error propagation are important features of every complex network. Studying
this phenomenon enables us to better understand the spread of information in a network which in turn may
lead to the improvement of its performance and robustness. The propagation characteristic depends heavily
on the network topology and a clear so-called “butterfly effect” relationship. In response to many types
of disturbances, propagation techniques play an important role in maintaining existing networks, e.g.
electric power grids synchronisation, prediction of complex system behaviour, resource discovery and
monitoring, biological invasions finding and damages determining, virus propagation control and
restraining, social and large scale infrastructure networks decomposition and immunizing. Recently,
enormous interest has been devoted to modelling cascading failures on the networks in quest of designing
'better' networks, not only robust to the random loss of nodes ('errors') like scale-free networks, but
also less vulnerable to its fragility to the selective loss of the most connected ones ('attacks'). Many
real-world networks have scale-free property and therefore there is a need to develop methods that would
enable to protect them from both random errors and deliberate attacks.
The issue is intended to support the development of propagation paradigms stemming from the cross-
fertilization of various research fields. Our aim is to highlight an ongoing research on different
methodological and technological approaches regarding propagation phenomenon together with their
applications on various domains.

We seek submissions of varied propagation strategies in the following (but not limited to):
•cascading failure and the damage assessment
•cellular and organic grids, agent colonies
•collective behaviour of social colonies
•complex network reliability estimation and improvement
•epidemic spreading and immune system proliferation
•knowledge propagation, coordination and integration
•nature-inspired approaches to propagation phenomenon
•robustness, vulnerability and immunizing
•self-adaptation and evolution
•self-organization and self-healing systems

Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks - Call for Book Chapters

Posted on 02:16 by Unknown
CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS
Book Title: Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks

A book edited by Jie Wu, and Yunsheng Wang
Temple University, USA
To be published by CRC Press

Chapter Proposal Submission
Deadline: 15 February 2013
Full Chapter Submission
Deadline: 1 June 2013

Introduction:
Recent rapid advances in mobile cellular networks and telecommunications
have introduced Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks as an interesting topic
to the research community, one that has started to receive much attention
from practitioners, scholars, and the general public. An opportunistic
mobile social network can be described as a platform that provides services
via hand-held and wireless devices, mainly for the purpose of fostering and
maintaining social interactions and connections. Therefore, an opportunistic
mobile social network can be considered a form of social network where
services are provided with mobility as an added value. Thanks to mobility,
many emergent applications related to social networking are now available
for individuals, business enterprises, and governments.

Objective:
The main goal of this book is to collect the recent development on
theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the opportunistic mobile social
networks. This book will be of particular value to academics, researchers,
practitioners, government officials, business organizations (e.g.,
executives, marketing professionals, resource managers, etc.), and even
customers -- working, participating, or those interested in fields related
to social networks. The content of the book will be especially useful for
students in areas like social networks, informatics, wireless networks, data
mining, and administrative sciences and management, but also applies to
students of education, economy, or law, who would benefit from the
information, cases, and examples therein.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Part I: Social Networks and Complex Networks
* Part II: Opportunistic Networks
* Part III: Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks
* Part IV: Applications

Submission Procedure:
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on February 15, 2013, a
2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his
or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by
March 1, 2013 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter
guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 1, 2013. All
submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Publisher:
This book is scheduled to be published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group.
The Work will be published initially under the imprint of Taylor & Francis,
a CRC Press book, or such other imprint as the Publisher deems suitable for
the Work. For additional information regarding the publisher, please
visit?www.crcpress.com. This book is anticipated to be released in 2014.

PhD fellowships in network science, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary

Posted on 05:34 by Unknown
Central European University Is Pleased To Announce Its Call For Applications
For Academic Year 2013/2014 PhD Certificate Program in Network Science

Central European University is an English-language, graduate university located in Budapest, Hungary. An
international university with students from some 100 countries and faculty from more than 40, CEU offers small, seminar-style courses and a student/faculty ratio of 7:1. CEU is accredited in the United States and Hungary.

The PhD Certificate Program in Network Science is a new program, offered by the Center for Network Science, that provides tools to understand the principles governing social, political, economic, and environmental networks. Students get to work with some of the most prominent network scientists in the world (Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, Rosario Mantegna, Janos Kertesz), exploring terabyte-sized datasets that capture mobile phone calls between millions of individuals; financial transactions between banks and companies; energy delivery systems; memberships in the directorial boards of companies; and affiliations in political parties.

Candidates with an interest in network science and its applications to political science, economics, and
environmental sciences and policy can apply via the respective departments' doctoral programs. Upon
completion of the doctoral program, students will also receive a PhD certificate in network science.

The program focuses on the following problem areas:
• Political science: business-political networks, social movements, social influences in voter behavior
• Economics: world system networks and development, embeddedness of multinational corporations,
network effects and externalities
• Environmental science: resilience in energy grids, food webs and economic competition

Scholarships and Fellowships

CEU is committed to attracting talented students and scholars from around the world. The University provides a variety of scholarships and research grants for which applicants from any country are eligible to apply.
• CEU Doctoral Fellowships cover full tuition, health insurance, and a generous stipend for housing and living
expenses. More than 90 percent of PhD students receive the full doctoral fellowship from CEU, while others
are supported by external organizations providing funding.
• Direct Student Loans and Canada Student Loans are available for eligible U.S. and Canadian students.
• External Scholarships and Financial Aid Programs administered through CEU include Erasmus Mundus
scholarships, Erasmus research grants, and other private and public fellowships and scholarships.

Career Paths

Network scientists are employed in academia, government, and business. Applied network scientists work
at Internet and social media companies, where they improve users' online experience. They also serve as
consultants developing business infrastructure and specialize in risk mitigation for major financial institutions.
