Social networks have quickly become the key organizing principle of
Internet communication and collaboration. Examples include connecting
friends and colleagues (such as Facebook or LinkedIn) to online social
media sites (YouTube, Flickr, and so on) to large-scale information
sharing communities (such as reddit and Yahoo! Answers) to crowd-based
funding services (Kickstarter and IndieGoGo) to Web-scale crowdsourcing
systems (Amazon Mechanical Turk or Crowdflower), and so on. Although
Internet-enabled social networks offer tremendous opportunities,
widespread interest in and growth of these systems raises new risks and
growing concerns. For instance, social network users can be bullied, their
pictures can be stolen, or their status posts can reach unwanted
audiences. Even when profiles don't list any information, social graphs
can be analyzed to infer personal information. Risks are also related to
identity management because, in these social scenarios, an individual's
online identity, which is strictly related to reputation and trust, is less and
less virtual and has more and more impact on real, offline life. A battle
now exists between individual privacy and the interests of the system at
large.

This special issue aims to bring together new research results from a
variety of backgrounds that address these common core challenges. Topics
of particular interest include

(*) methods for protecting privacy in social networks;
(*) algorithms, theories, and systems for detecting deception in social
networks;
(*) privacy-preserving methods for data access and data mining;
(*) identity theft in social networks;
(*) identity management in social networks;
(*) online and social identity; and
(*) trust and reputation in social networks.

Editors' note: We encourage submissions from both academic and industrial
practitioners, especially as they pertain to open source tools or
products, but content must have technical merit, not be an advertisement.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words,
focused on Internet technologies and implementations. All manuscripts are
subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to IC's
international readershipâ€"primarily practicing engineers and academics
who are looking for material that introduces new technology and broadens
familiarity with current topics. We do not accept white papers, and we

### Scope ###

### Paper Submission ###

We invite original research papers that have not been previously published and are not currently under review for publication elsewhere. Contributions addressing all areas related to collaborative networking, technology and systems, and applications are solicited. The submitted manuscript should closely reflect the final paper as it will appear in the Proceedings. Submitted papers should be 10 pages in two-column IEEE proceeding format. The papers can be submitted in regular track or Industry/Application track.

### Workshops Proposals ###

Proposals for half-day or full day workshops that focus on CollaborateCom 2013 related themes are solicited. Workshop proposals should be at most five pages, including a biographical sketch of each instructor, and submitted to the Workshop Chairs. Proposals will be evaluated based on the expertise and experience of the organizers and the relevance and importance of the subject matter. Please refer to call for workshop proposals for details.

### Panels Proposals ###

Proposals for panel discussions that focus on future visions for collaborative networking, applications, and work sharing are preferred. Potential panel organizers should submit a panel proposal of at most five pages, including biographical sketches of the proposed panelists to the Panel Chairs.

### Tutorials Proposals ###

Proposals for full and half-day tutorials are solicited. Tutorials are intended to enhance the technical program, and as such they should be relevant to collaborative computing, networking, worksharing, and applications. Potential tutorial presenters should submit a tutorial proposal of at most three pages, including: description of potential audience and background knowledge expected from the audience, if any; tutorial description; biographical sketch of presenter(s).

VLDBJ special issue on Data-Intensive Cloud Infrastructure

Aims and Scope

More and more individuals, companies and organizations are relying on the
cloud to store and manage their data, which translates into increasing
pressure on the cloud infrastructure. Cloud data can be very diverse,
including a wide variety of personal data collections, very large
multimedia content repositories and very large datasets. Users and
application developers can be in very high numbers, with little DBMS
expertise. Data-intensive applications can be very diverse too, with
requirements ranging from basic database capabilities to complex analytics
over big data. In particular, the pay-as-you-go model makes the cloud
attractive for supporting novel large-scale elastic applications.
NoSQL solutions for the cloud, for instance, have traded consistency and
transactional guarantees for scalability. However, the grand challenge for
a data-intensive cloud infrastructure is to provide ease of use,
consistency, privacy, scalability and elasticity, simultaneously, over
cloud data. Addressing this challenge requires novel solutions across the
spectrum of data management techniques, including massive data storage,
elastic parallel query processing, transactions over data replicated at
geographically distributed sites, security and privacy, and efficient data
loading and access.
This special issue focuses on recent advances in research and development
in data-intensive cloud infrastructures.

Topics of Interest

The VLDB Journal solicits contributions to a Special Issue on
Data-Intensive Cloud Infrastructure. Relevant topics include, but are not

Area of Work
The Database Systems and Information Management Group (DIMA) at Technische
Universität Berlin is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of
"big data analytics", for an initial funding period of one year, with the
option for extension for up to another three years upon successful renewal
of the Stratosphere project (www.stratosphere.eu), which will be decided
in July 2013.

The goal of Stratosphere is to jointly with researchers at other
institutions in Berlin, Europe, and worldwide conduct research and build
a large-scale data processor for executing complex data analysis programs
on huge, heterogeneous, high-velocity data sets. We plan to conduct
research that will lay the foundation for automatic optimization and
processing of stateful and iterative data analysis programs in a massively
parallel, fault-tolerant way. We will be researching a data programming
model based on functional programming, bringing together compiler
technology (Java, Scala, JVM) and parallel database systems and query
optimization. We will be looking at real-world use-cases in the area of
machine learning, information extraction, and data profiling. Our work
will be made available open-source. We intend to evaluate our research
jointly with other research institutions and companies in real-world
application settings.


Requirements:
Applicants should have completed a PhD in database systems, and have the
zeal to work in a leading research environment at the forefront of
technology innovation, interested in building systems and putting research
results into practical use. Ideally you have specialized in the area of
query processing or optimization, during your PhD, with additional skills
in programming languages and compilers, distributed systems, programming
languages design, parallel programming, or benchmarking and system
evaluation, documented by a strong publication record. A good knowledge of
Hadoop internals, the map/reduce programming model, as well as parallel
database implementation skills will be useful. Moreover, a good command of
skills in the areas of mathematics, statistics, as well as analytical and
project management skills will be useful. Proficiency in English and a
track record of strong research publications is a prerequisite. German is
not required, but basic German skills or intere!
st in learning the language will be helpful for day to day interactions.

Since Jim Gray started his huge astronomy project at Microsoft to proclaim the
age of data science in the late 1990s, this approach has proliferated to many
other areas beyond the natural sciences. In Information Systems, the 1990s saw
the analysis of historical data collected in data warehouses. Soon after, the
quasi real-time analysis of high-frequency trading in finance added the data
stream aspect to data mining. Search engines, web commerce, and social media
have added text mining, social network analysis, and heterogeneous data analysis
to the spectrum.

The buzzword "Big Data" nowadays characterizes analytical systems with extreme
data Volume, high data Variety, and rapid data generation Velocity. Even though
this buzzword is surely approaching its peak in the Gartner lifecycle, there are
many arguments why this trend will continue and even accelerate in the coming
years. The Internet of Things accelerates data generation by integrating
billions of sensors, the media spectrum is broadened by image, audio, and video,
and ever faster multicore and parallel computers produce ever more complex
simulation results that need to be administered and analyzed. This offers
numerous chances for business, public administration, and all kinds of sciences.
But intrinsically, it also increases dependency on systems and allows systems to
enter more and more deeply into areas of life that until very recently were
unquestionably private. Nationally and internationally, very many research
endeavours have begun to explore these new chances and challenges.

The planned special issue wants to contribute to the scientific debate
especially of the role of business information systems in this major societal
change. We desire contributions from research and practice e.g. on the following
themes:

* Strategic role of big data for competitiveness and service quality
* Empirical studies of the impact of big data
* Legal and regulatory aspects of big data
* Privacy-aware data mining
* Big data in specific aspects of business such as finance, marketing, logistics, etc.
* Big data in public sector services and government planning
* Big data und Cyberphysical Systems in business
* Data quality and Big Data
* Role of novel big data technologies such as stream mining, main memory databases, cloud computing, etc.
* Big data analysis of heterogeneous data sources

The emphasis of submissions should be on data-centric approaches; purely
model-centric methods, even if they work with large data sets, are not in the
focus of the special issue.

Please submit papers for the sections BISE Research Paper and BISE State of
the Art by 2013-11-01 at the latest via the journal online submission system
(http://www.editorialmanager.com/buis/). Please observe the instructions
regarding the format and size of contributions to Business & Information Systems
Engineering (BISE)/WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK. Papers should not exceed 50,000
characters including spaces, minus 5,000 characters per page for
illustrations.

All papers will be reviewed anonymously (double-blind process) by several
referees with regard to relevance, originality, and research quality. In
addition to the editors of the journal, including those of this special focus,
distinguished national and international professionals with scientific and
practical backgrounds will be involved in the review process.

Complementary articles covering topics of this special focus are also more than
welcome. Accepted papers will appear identically in English and German.
The English-language version will appear in Business & Information Systems
Engineering (BISE), the German-language version will appear in
WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK.
