Abstract—The plethora of talks and presentations taking place at academic conferences makes it difficult, especially for young researchers to attend the right talks or discuss with participants and potential collaborators with similar interests. Participants may not have a priori knowledge that allows them to select the right talks or informal interactions with other participants. In this paper we present the context-aware mobile recommendation services (CAMRS) based on the current context (whereabouts at the venue, popularity and activities of talks and presentations) sensed at the conference venue. Additionally, we augment the current context with the academic community context of conference participants which is inferred by using social network analysis and link prediction on large-scale co-authorship and citation networks of participants. By combining the dynamic and social context of participants, we are able to recommend talks and people that may be interesting to a particular participant. We evaluated CAMRS using data from two large digital libraries - the DBLP and CiteSeerX, and participants from two conferences - ICWL 2010 and EC-TEL 2011. The result shows that the new approach can recommend novel talks and helps participants in establishing new connections at conference venue.

Introduction
----------------------------
High-performance classrooms are characterized by 1:1 computing, high
cognitive density, and big data. However, in comparison with most other
professionals from whom clients expect rapid decisions in a dynamically
changing environment, presently teachers often do not get the information
they need for decision making in a timely fashion and in a meaningful and
actionable format. Building on the NEXT-TELL project, the TaPTA workshop
explores methods and tools to support teachers' professional vision in 21st
century classrooms. This workshop's ambitious objective is to jumpstart a
new learning sciences research stream on teaching analytics by bringing
together learning scientists in different sub-fields such as CSCL, ITS, EDM,
researchers in Visual Analytics, and data scientists working with "Big Data"
in public institutions and private enterprises. In addition to researchers,
we are also targeting teachers at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of
education to be involved as co-designers and discussants.

ICALT 2012 Contributions from the ACIS Group at RWTH Aachen University

The 12th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT 2012) is starting today in Rome, Italy. Our Advanced Community Information Systems (ACIS) group at RWTH Aachen University has made some contributions to the program (pdf download).

In the European Research Projects track we have a paper reporting results from the TELMAP project. This paper is co-authored with Michael Derntl who is also chairing the session on serious games at the ICALT 2012.

Social Network Analysis of European Project Consortia to Reveal Impact of Technology-Enhanced Learning Projects

The European Commission (EC) has spent hundreds of millions of euros on collaborative Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) projects in recent years. Consequently the EC is interested in the impact generated by those projects. Spawning sustained collaboration ties can be interpreted as one aspect of project impact. In this paper we present a novel way of analyzing this latent impact of TEL projects by applying social network analysis on the projects’ collaboration structures. Our analysis includes TEL projects funded under FP6, FP7 and eContentplus, and identifies central projects and strong, sustained organizational collaboration ties. 

Michael has also another paper about IMS Learning Design. This paper won the ICALT 2012 best full paper award. Congratulations to Michael.

Interactions for Learning as Expressed in an IMS LD Runtime Environment (Best Paper)

The way pedagogical aspects are expressed in the user interface of virtual learning environments greatly impacts the learning process, in particular the interactions between students and other human or non-human actors in the learning environment. This paper presents an evaluation of how the interactions for learning are expressed in the user interface of an IMS Learning Design (LD) runtime environment. Specifically, we selected Reigeluth and Moore’s set of interactions for learning and tested how these are visually expressed and supported in the user interface of the SLeD Player. The findings show that there are several drawbacks in the current way of visualizing units of learning during runtime: the synchronization of participants in corresponding learning and support activities is not clearly expressed, the current role remains unclear in multi-role settings, and the nested display of unit of learning contents impedes navigation. Drawing from these findings, we provide indications regarding future development of IMS LD runtime user interfaces. 

There is also another TELMAP paper and a presentation from our network of excellence in serious games (GALA). Only yesterday I announced a new proposal for a bachelor thesis in our ACIS group.

Also in the context of GALA we have another full paper describing the developement and the deployment of a mobile game engine for location-based educational games on the Android OS.

Developing a Mobile Game Environment to Support Disadvantaged Learners

This paper reports on the development of WeBuild, a mobile learning game designed to engage learners difficult to reach with IT learning. The development is based on a mobile game engine for the Android smart phone that was devised to support the required multiplayer and location based services. We played and tested the mobile learning game in a training facility of the building industry. The results indicate that the learners accepted the game for the low entry barriers and were motivated to use the game in an educational context. This paper describes the WeBuild prototype and the underlying game engine. Eventually, it presents results from the game session that was carried to assess interface and gameplay usability, technical functionality and motivational aspects of the game design.

Supporting Self-Regulation by Personal Learning Environments

In this paper we attempt to address the issue of supporting self-regulation in Personal Learning Environments (PLE), which provide the learner with a freedom to design and compose his or her learning environment according to personal preferences and context demands. Psychology and neuroscience provide a lot of highly relevant results that should be taken into account. We report on our experiments mainly with PhD students, which represent a community of advanced learners. This needs to be considered when interpreting their feedback, as for most of the learners is self-regulation even more challenging.

Scope

Much has been learned about the structure and function of complex systems during the past three decades. This research has informed numerous individual scientific fields in important ways, and has led to a maturing understanding of the extent to which complex systems from diverse domains share common underlying properties and characteristics. The recent availability of innovative measurement techniques (e.g., in biology) and new modes of social interaction (e.g., via social media) are enabling vast data sets to be compiled, and with the emergence of these data comes the promise that progress in complex systems research will only accelerate. COMPLEX 2012 aims to provide a stimulating and trans-disciplinary forum that permits researchers and practitioners in all areas of complex systems science to exchange ideas and present their latest results.

Topics

Papers reporting original research are invited on all aspects of complex systems, including:

Foundations of complex systems: structure and dynamics of complex networks, multi-scale phenomena, nonlinear dynamics, emergence, self-organization, information and computation, "robust yet fragile" systems.

Analysis of complex systems: modeling and simulation, multi-agent systems, predictability and prediction, knowledge discovery, machine learning, statistical analysis, optimization, social network analysis, causality, artificial intelligence, game theory.

Complex biological systems: systems biology, biological networks, ecology, evolution, neuroscience, epidemiology, food webs, bioinformatics, gene regulation, metabolism.

Complex social systems: social networks, social dynamics, organizational structure and dynamics, economic and financial systems, firms, markets, business, conflict and security, social media and the WWW, human mobility, adversarial systems.

Complex engineering systems: Internet, telecommunication systems, energy generation and distribution, transportation networks, artificial life, sensor networks, quantum computing, infrastructure security.
