INFORMATION

The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses. For the previous 9 years, TLAD workshops have brought together those teaching database modules in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and to explore which methods are appropriate to database modules and closely related areas.

The tenth workshop is taking place at the School of Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire.  It will concentrate on novel teaching and assessment approaches for database and database related modules, as well as covering other issues related to the teaching, learning and assessment of databases. It is intended that the workshop will include time for discussion, and so contributions are sought particularly in the areas of (but not restricted to):

- novel teaching areas and their relationship to databases;
- databases and enterprise level computing;
- creating suitable curricula for the rapidly evolving ways in which database technology is used;
- use of appropriate and novel assessment techniques;
- use of appropriate and novel database technologies to enrich the student experience;
- ensuring that theory and practice are balanced in database teaching;
- exploiting innovative teaching methods in order to enhance the student learning experience;
- exploiting effective learning and teaching mechanisms for distance learning;
- pedagogical and organisational frameworks and paradigms;
- adaptivity in learning systems;
- integrating the teaching of databases from schools, through universities to the CPD of those in employment;
- teaching of internet programming and their use of databases;
- teaching of ubiquitous and pervasive application programming and their use of databases;
- teaching of XML and its relationship with databases;
- teaching of data mining, data warehousing and OLAP;
- teaching of emerging topics and technologies including data spaces, the cloud, database forensics.


We would again like to receive contributions from those who have an involvement in teaching or developing learning materials in all forms of education who have considered the above issues and have some thoughts or solutions to offer. Research papers, demonstrations, panel and discussion topics are welcome.

Please send all submissions (papers, demonstration descriptions or panel/discussion group ideas) to TLAD@abertay.ac.uk. All submissions should be made as PDF or MS Word documents. Due to the lateness of this CFP, extended abstracts are also welcome for initial submission; on acceptance these should be expanded into full or short papers.

For any accepted paper it is a requirement that the presenter be registered for the workshop by the 22nd June for the paper to be published in the proceedings.

The workshop will be supported by the Higher Education Academy as in previous years. Conference proceedings will be published with an ISBN number.

SUBMISSION FORMAT

There is no specific template for the initial submission of extended abstracts or papers. The camera-ready template is available by email on request; the maximum length for papers is 12 pages. If submitting an extended abstract, please include an indication as to whether you are hoping to submit a full paper (approx. 10-12 pages) or a short paper (approx. 6-8 pages) if the abstract is accepted.

For the last 19 years, the ABIS Workshop has been a highly interactive forum
for discussing the state of the art in personalization and user modeling.
Latest developments in industry and research are presented in plenary
sessions, forums, and tutorials. Researchers, Ph.D. students and Web
professionals obtain and exchange novel ideas, expertise and feedback on
ongoing research before submitting their work to major conferences such as
CHI, UMAP, WWW and SIGIR.

This year's ABIS will be organized as part of Mensch & Computer 2012, the
leading event in the area of human-computer interaction in German speaking
countries.


The ABIS workshop accepts full or short papers, position statements, Ph.D.

Poster submissions should include an extended abstract no longer than 4
pages, including all figures and references, in Extended Abstract format

abstract will be published in the ACM Digital Library as part of the
Conference Extended Abstracts. In addition, submissions should also include
a separate Tabloid sized draft of the poster for review purposes. A Tabloid
is an 11 × 17 inches format. Please submit the 4-page paper in PDF format
and name this file ContactAuthorsLastName.pdf. Both the extended abstract
and the poster draft should include author names (these are not anonymous
submissions).

DEMO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Group 2012 demonstrations present implementations of new CSCW systems and
concepts. The peer-reviewed demonstrations allow conference participants to
view novel and noteworthy CSCW systems in action, discuss the systems with
those who created them, and try them out. Appropriate demonstrations include
applications, technologies, and research prototypes, and may include work
that has been previously published at CSCW or elsewhere. Demonstrations can
also serve to showcase novel commercial products not previously described in
the research literature. Demonstrations should be interactive and provide
attendees a hands-on experience. The demo forum is not an opportunity for
marketing or sales presentations. Presenters must have been directly
involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the
unique and novel contributions of the system.

The demo system summary is a two page description of the demo and the
required setup in Extended Abstract format
(http://chi2012.acm.org/cfp-formatting-instructions.shtml). This extended
abstract will be published in the ACM Digital Library as part of the
Conference Extended Abstracts. It provides information about the
presenter(s), including their relationship to the project. It also provides

Crowdsourcing techniques have been proposed to address different aspects of web engineering ranging from the generation of content to the design and adaptation of web sites. At the same time, many Web 2.0 platforms have been designed around crowdsourcing models that enable the functionality to be extended through community-developed applications or plugins. Here, potential security issues have gained particular attention among researchers. Recently, a number of researchers have also begun to look at the use of crowdsourcing to support the evaluation of not only web sites and their interfaces but also various tools that form part of the design and development process. The Third Semantic Personalized Information Management (SPIM 2012) workshop aims at investigating new challenges and requirements for web based information systems that arise with the advent of the Social and Semantic Web. SHORT DESCRIPTION:
What will be the future of Web development? Web Engineering is a specific domain in which systematic development is needed and therefore approaches such as model-driven and agile development can be successfully applied. Existing model-based Web engineering approaches already provide methods and tools for the design and development of most kinds of Web applications. They address different concerns using separate models (navigation, presentation, workflows, etc.) and come with model compilers that produce most of the application?s Web pages and logic based on these models. In practice, however, most of these Web Engineering proposals do not fully exploit all the potential benefits of Model-driven Engineering (MDE), such as complete platform independence, metamodeling, and model transformations.

The MDE paradigm offers advantages such as technology independent models and (partially) automatic generation of applications, but also well-known problems as maintenance of the models. Thus, there are defenders of MDE and also defenders of alternative paradigms such as agile development processes. We want to raise a lively and constructive discussion on pro and cons, and how in practice we can benefit from both a MDE and an agile development process. Find some responses at the workshop!

Following the Internet trends, we want to focus the workshop on two main topics and how MDE and/or an agile process could help in the development, evolution and maintainability of social Web and social enterprise apps as well as multi-device, mobile and rich Web applications (RIAs).

1st International Workshop on User Interface Description Languages in Web Engineering (UIDL-WE'12)

SHORT DESCRIPTION:
The UIDL-WE workshop is aimed at investigating open research/development issues in the area of user interfaces of web applications based on a User Interface Description Language (UIDL). First, fundamental aspects need to be addressed in order to rigorously pave the way for a sound UIDL: models, meta-models, languages, and notations. Second, applied aspects of a UIDL should also be discussed in order to properly operationalize the UIDL:
(meta-)model editors, computer-aided software engineering, software support, rendering engines and code generators, but also requirements for industrial uptake, including case studies in real-world conditions and the investigation of factors that may determine acceptance by developers. Third, in order to ensure the quality of web applications for the end-users, some evaluation needs to be conducted in order to assess the quality of the application that can be derived by the UIDL, especially from the viewpoint of visual quality, usability, and efficiency.

The exponential growth of the Social Web poses both challenges and new
opportunities for recommender systems research. The Social Web has turned
information consumers into active contributors creating massive amounts of
information. Finding relevant and interesting content at the right time and
in the right context is challenging for existing recommender approaches. At
the same time, social systems by their very nature encourage interaction
among users and with a variety of resources, thus generating new sources of
knowledge for recommender systems. Users of social media on the Web often
explicitly provide personal information or implicitly express preferences
through their interactions with other users or with resources (e.g. tagging,
friending, rating, commenting, etc.).

New application areas for recommender systems emerge with the popularity of
the Social Web. Recommenders can not only be used to sort and filter Web 2.0
and social network information, they can also support users in the
information sharing process, e.g., by recommending suitable tags during
folksonomy development. There are also opportunities for novel recommender
applications on the Social Web that directly involve humans in the
recommendation process, for example, users or groups making recommendations
to other users, or online multi-user games leading to recommendations.

These various new sources of knowledge can be leveraged to improve
recommendation techniques and develop new strategies which focus on social
recommendation. This social layer can also be used as evidence on which to
infer relationships and trust levels between users for recommendation
generation.

Recommender systems technologies can assist social systems through
increasing adoption and participation and sustaining membership. Through
targeted and timely intervention which stimulates traffic and interaction,
recommender systems technology can play its role in sustaining the success
of the Social Web.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researcher and practitioners
to explore, discuss, and understand challenges and new opportunities for
recommender systems and the Social Web. Original contributions are solicited
in all aspects of recommendation on the Social Web, including, but not
limited to the following areas:

recommender systems in the Social Web. Papers should be formatted according

Theme: “Fostering Innovation and Excellence in Engineering  Education”

The IEEE International Conference on Teaching, Assessment,
and Learning for Engineering (TALE) will be held each year
in the Asia-Pacific region (IEEE Region 10) beginning in
2012. It is intended to complement existing conferences
sponsored by the IEEE Education Society, most notably
Frontiers in Education in North America (IEEE Regions 1–7)
and EDUCON in Europe/Middle East/Africa (IEEE Region 8).
The aim of TALE 2012 is to provide a forum for
academicians and professionals from various educational
fields and with cross-disciplinary interests to network,
share knowledge and engage in dialogue around the theme of
fostering innovation and excellence in engineering
education. To this end, both research and
practice-oriented papers are invited that encompass all
aspects of education in the engineering fields (including
computing, computer science, information technology and
cognate disciplines). The conference will feature
traditional paper presentations, workshops, as well as
keynotes by renowned educational experts and authorities.

PAPER SUBMISSION, REVIEW AND PUBLICATION
Prospective authors are invited to submit papers of four
(4) to six (6) A4 pages (including tables, figures and
references) in standard IEEE double-column format. Papers
will be accepted only by electronic submission through the
conference website, from which submission guidelines and a
template for papers are available. A blind-review process
will be used to evaluate all submitted papers. Each full
registration for the conference will cover a maximum of
two papers; each student registration will cover a single
paper only. All accepted and registered papers that are
presented at the conference will be published in the
conference proceedings (CD-ROM/USB) and uploaded to the
IEEE Xplore database, which is indexed by Scopus. The
proceedings will also be submitted for possible indexing
to EI Compendex, ISI Thompson Conference Proceedings
Citation Index (CPCI) and INSPEC.

Awards will be presented to authors of the best papers
presented at the conference. These authors, along with
authors of other selected papers, may be invited to submit
revised and expanded versions for potential publication in
the IEEE Transactions on Education, and/or other refereed
international journals. (The content of the expanded paper
must be substantially different to that of the version
submitted to the conference, and publication is subject to
peer-review acceptance in accordance with the relevant
journal's editorial policies and guidelines.)

Notification of review outcomes: 7 June 2012
Final paper submission: 30 June 2012
Registration deadline: 30 June 2012
Conference dates: 20–23 August 2012
