Joint European Summer School on Technology Enhanced Learning 2013
http://www.prolearn-academy.org/Events/summer-school-2013
May 26 – June 1, 2013, Limassol, Cyprus

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:
We are pleased to announce the 9th Joint European Summer School on Technology Enhanced Learning, to take place from Monday, May 27th to Friday, May 31st, 2013 in Limassol, Cyprus. Pre-summer school activities are organized all day on Sunday, May 26th. The summer school aims to encourage participants to adopt a critical stance in thinking about the role of technologies in providing opportunities for learners and the potential of these opportunities in terms of learning.

The summer school provides a stimulating learning environment where participants get opportunities to: develop research skills; increase their knowledge base; collaborate with others in their own and complementary research areas; engage in debate; have access to experts in the field; and discuss their own work. For thissummer school the overarching theme is ‘interdisciplinary’ and the focus will be on the challenges and opportunities that arise from working at the boundaries of different disciplines.

The programme covers topics from a broad range of domains which contribute to advancing the field of Technology Enhanced Learning. TEL research projects are encouraged to provide doctoral candidates with a perspective of the state-of-the-art research under study in their working groups. The programme will also include practical and methodological workshops as well as opportunities for doctoral candidates to develop their personal research and discuss their doctoral work.
APPLICATIONS:
Doctoral candidates should submit their applications online before Friday February 1st, 2013. Please download the application form, fill it in, and upload it tohttps://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=jtel2013. Please tick the appropriate box Doctoral Candidate application.

IMPORTANT DATES:
February 14, 2013: Extended deadline for submitting applications, workshop and lecture proposals to the Summer School
March 1, 2013: Notification of acceptance
April 1, 2013: Registration

ACCOMMODATION AND SOCIAL EVENTS:
The Summer School will take place in Limassol, Cyprus. It will be hosted in Navarria Hotel, located close to Amathus Ruins and very close to Limassol town centre. Additional area attractions include Limassol Castle and Limassol District Archaeological Museum. Regular buses to the centre of the city and to other cities run from the main road outside the centre. The venue is within 35-45 minutes’ drive from both Paphos and Larnaca airports. Regular buses to these locations are also available, as well as special buses that we will be arranged for JTELSS 2013.

COST OF SUMMER SCHOOL:
The cost for doctoral candidates is Euro 570 (including accommodation - 7 nights in double rooms, meals and excursions).  The European Association for Technology Enhanced Learning will provide funding to pay summer school fees for a limited number of applicants.

CALL FOR LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS:
If you would like to offer a lecture or workshop at the summer school we invite you to submit a proposal (about ½ page to a full page) describing your contribution, which should demonstrate how your presentation/activity will benefit the doctoral candidates attending the summer school (mainly early to mid-stage). For thissummer school the overarching theme is ‘interdisciplinary’ and the focus will be on the challenges and opportunities that arise from working at the boundaries of different disciplines. If your proposal is selected it will be published on the summer school website.

We encourage interactive sessions rather than lecture-style presentations, and your proposal could include details about how you plan to engage the doctoral candidates. Lectures are usually no longer than 45 minutes and workshops are usually 90 minutes. Some workshops run 2 x 90 minutes. Lectures should provide students with insight into the state-of-the-art in one aspect of TEL or methodologies for conducting research in TEL. Workshops should provide hands-on opportunities to work with new technologies or develop research techniques.

Please submit your proposal to Easy Chair: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=jtel2013. Be sure to tick the correct box: lecture or workshop proposal.
Please note that speakers and workshop organizers are expected to cover the costs of their trip and accommodation (typically through the TEL projects they are belonging to).
Doctoral candidates applying to participate in the summer school are also invited to propose workshops. In this case they must make TWO submissions: the JTEL doctoral candidate application and the workshop submission.

Special Issue on Clouds for Social Computing - IEEE Transactions on Service Computing

Special Issue Call for Papers: Clouds for Social Computing

IEEE Transactions on Service Computing:

Email: Cecile.Paris@CSIRO.AU

In recent time, two complimentary Internet based research areas are
emerging: social computing and cloud computing.
At one hand, social computing empowers individual users with relatively low
technological sophistication in using the Web to engage in social
interaction, contribute their expertise and share their content, experience
and opinion.
On the other hand, cloud computing shifts the computing infrastructures to
the individual users as utilities so that individual users with relatively
low computing knowledge can have a disposal of high performing computing
infrastructure (e.g., compute, storage and applications) with little
investment.

Due to these two complementary technologies of empowering individual users,
the technological innovations in these areas have started to converge. In
recent time, we have seen the next revolution of digitisation – digitisation
of social behaviour. Data collected from our daily activities, such as
groceries shopping and surfing the Internet, reveal a lot about our
behaviour. Based on past buying behaviour, our local supermarket knows what
we will be buying this Christmas much before we do our actual shopping. The
introduction of social networks adds yet a new dimension to this process of
digitising social behaviour: it reveals our friends, affiliations, beliefs,
thoughts and opinions. This digitisation of social behaviour results in a
large data set (also known as a Big Data problem) that needs to be analysed
to yield meaningful results. The challenge for us is how to reap the full
potential of digitized social behaviour.

Researchers in social computing have started to exploit the offer of cloud
computing to crunch the big data resulting from social behaviour, and
similarly researchers in cloud computing have started developing new
efficient and effective big data processing algorithms using clouds. In this
special issue, we are seeking state-of-the-art research, development and
deployment efforts of deploying social computing in clouds or using clouds
for social computing bringing these two areas together.

The topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited
to:
• Social network data analysis tools and services on the Cloud.
• Social Networks in Cloud
• Social Networks Monitoring Tools As a Service
• Cloud Infrastructure for Social Networks
• Building Clouds Using Social Networks
• Visualisation and monitoring tools for Clouds and Social Computing
• Application of social networking in Cloud
• Case studies of clouds for social computing
• Case studies of social computing in clouds

February 15, 2013 Camera-Ready Submission: March 23, 2013
Registration: March 23, 2013
Workshop and CISIS main Conference: July 3 - 5, 2013

SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES

Despite a great potential and some initial successes, e-learning systems do
not yet have the impact that many believe is possible. Moreover, the gap
seems to be increasing because of the greater expectations of the current
generation (Digital Natives) who have grown up with modern technology. There
are also more general problems. In particular, an over-emphasis on cost
effectiveness has meant that content is often not as strong as it needs to
be and this deficiency has contributed to a lack of user engagement and some
high attrition rates. Studies have consistently highlighted the important
relationship between engagement and learning, with students who are highly
motivated being more likely to engage in the learning process.
The Second International Workshop ALICE 2012 aims at providing a forum for
innovative adaptive e-learning combining personalization, collaboration,
simulation and storytelling aspects within an affective/emotional based
approach able to contribute to the overcoming of the quoted limitations of
current e-learning systems and content. Special emphasis is given to
environments that are interactive, challenging and context aware while
enabling learners' demand of empowerment, social identity, and authentic
learning experience.
The expected contributions should be able to effectively involve learners in
educational, cultural and informative activities. Empirical results from
real users in real learning and training settings will be very valuable in
order to evaluate and discuss the impact of the proposed innovative
features. Academic researchers, professionals and practitioners are invited
to exchange their experiences and ideas about problems and solutions related
to the design, development and use of advanced and innovative, knowledge
based learning systems and applications. Researchers can report their ideas,
models, designs and experiences on the proposed topics.

Special Issue on Crisis Informatics and Collaboration - JCSCW

Posted on 02:04 by Unknown

Call for Papers

Springer International Journal on Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (JCSCW):
Special Issue on Crisis Informatics and Collaboration

Guest Editors: Volkmar Pipek, Sophia Liu, Andruid Kerne

Submission of Abstracts: January 15, 2013 (for review organization) Submission of Full Papers: February 28, 2013

Major crises and disasters like the September 11th attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and the Sendai earthquake is a ripe domain for CSCW concerns as they typically involve collaboration among individuals, organizations and society as a whole during all phases of emergency management, from initial planning and preparedness, through the detection of a crisis event, and into the response, recovery and mitigation phases. In many crisis scenarios, the quality of the collaboration among governmental, professional, volunteer, and citizen responders in crisis management greatly affects the impact on loss of lives and property.

Crisis Informatics takes an interdisciplinary perspective on the socio-technical, informational and collaborative aspects of developing and using technologies and information systems in the context of the full disaster lifecycle—preparation, warning, impact, response, recovery, and mitigation phases. Crisis Informatics views emergency management as a socio-technical system where information is disseminated within and among official and public channels and entities. Crisis informatics also wrestles with methodological concerns as it strives to develop socially- and behaviorally-informed theories, policies, and development of information and communication technology (ICT). As the challenges of crisis management grow more complex from the increase in vulnerability to hazards of all types, the opportunities to collaborate using a rapidly growing set of ICTs and collaborative technologies (e.g., social networking sites, mobile devices, location-aware services, crowdsourcing systems, web-based systems, etc.) urge us to find new ways of understanding, conceptualizing and evaluating possible use cases for these collaborative technologies in emergency management and response. ‘Collaborative Resilience' strategies can help improve collaboration quality but such strategies and the ICTs being developed and used in crisis situations need to be explored in terms of describing and exchanging good practices, designing appropriate coordination mechanisms, and offering technological support for collaboration across organizational borders.

For this Special Issue of the Journal on Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (JCSCW) on “Crisis Informatics and Collaboration,” we invite research papers from multiple disciplines with the focus on pursuing scientific questions around Crisis Informatics topics. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
      • User experience studies and design approaches of presenting, visualizing, and interacting with social media data, crowdsourcing systems, crisis mapping applications, virtual communities, networked organizations, etc. that facilitate collaboration in crisis management;
      • Studies and human-centered design approaches of interorganizational coordination mechanisms, technological concepts and prototypes, and participatory development of emergency management technology that support collaboration in crisis situations;
      • Critical studies, methodological considerations, and design approaches of collaborative systems that address ethical, legal, and social issues including security and privacy issues in developing, using, and researching emergency management information systems that involve collaborations between governmental, professional, volunteer, and citizen responders in crisis management;
      • Theoretical considerations regarding collaborative resilience and emergency response as a socio-technical system, as well as studies of and concepts for establishing and supporting ‘collaborative resilience’ that involve collaborative services and technologies to improve the resilience of cities, infrastructures, logistic chains, etc. through public-private partnerships.
      • Studies and design approaches of serious games and gamification of crisis management applications for emergency response training, raising awareness, and conducting research;
      • Case Studies from practitioners explaining uses of collaborative technologies in the field and discussing potential solutions and real-world applications to give insights into best practices and lessons learned;
      • Different international perspectives of socio-cultural differences in uses of collaborative ICTs and participatory decision-making in crisis management.

Deadlines / Schedule:
Submission of Abstracts: January 15, 2013 (for review organization) Submission of Full Papers: February 28, 2013 Review Deadline: April 29, 2013 Notifications to the Authors: May 22, 2013 Final Version Deadline: July 1, 2013 Online Publication: August 2013 (printed edition to be scheduled by Springer)

Submission Guidelines
This special issue will include 7-10 full papers. Abstracts can be sent to any of the editors via email by January 15, 2013. Manuscripts of about 8,000 - 10,000 words should be submitted by February 28, 2013. Special Issue on Ubiquitous User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction - UMUAI

Posted on 01:57 by Unknown

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on Ubiquitous User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction: The Journal of Personalization Research (UMUAI)
  *** Extended abstract submission deadline: March 1, 2013
  *** Paper submission deadline (for accepted abstracts): July 15, 2012 UMUAI
Web site: http://www.umuai.org/

SCOPE
As ubiquitous and pervasive computing becomes a reality, there is both the opportunity and need to create a solid foundation for personalization research in this area. Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp) and Pervasive Computing are now synonymous for many, and represent a new model of computing in which computation is everywhere and computer functions are integrated into everything. For UbiComp, Weiser postulated that ``It will be built into the basic objects, environments, and the activities of our everyday lives in such a way that no one will notice its presence''. Such a model of computation will “weave itself into the fabric of our lives, until it is indistinguishable from it”. Everyday objects will be places for sensing, input, processing along with user output (Greenfield, 2006). In practice, this means the ubiquitous availability of many computing devices that are carried or embedded in our homes, cars, offices, in walls and tables, or worn as part of smart clothing. To realise this, we need to provide personalized services to users, individuals as well as groups, wherever they are and whenever they need it. Notably, UbiComp introduces the potential for context-aware personalisation. Context includes information from the person (physiological state), the sensed environment (environmental state), and computational environment (computational state) that can be provided to alter an applications behaviour.

Ubiquitous and Pervasive User Modelling (UPUM) has a key role to play in the visions for personalisation that are central to ubiquitous and pervasive computing. The large amounts of personal data that are increasingly being captured across each individual’s personal digital ecosystem have the potential to contribute to a user model, which, in turn, can drive personalised services. The multi-faceted challenges of achieving this have been recognised as critical for the progress towards ubiquity and pervasiveness. For example, Caceres and Friday, in reflecting on 20 years of research, point to the importance of dealing with issues such as pervasive ubiquitous data, support for users to control their own data and the personalisation based on it, particularly in terms of privacy, but also in ensuring people control their own smart environments.

Rapid technological changes, such as widespread smarter and cheaper devices providing personal sensing and services, has brought important progress in the field of UPUM. Many of these changes have occurred over the past seven years, since the previous UMUAI special issue on user modeling in UbiComp. It makes this a timely opportunity to call for an update of the state of the art in the field. Such updates can provide a critical review of what was central research then and is now on the periphery, or what new challenges and gaps have emerged or remained present. Overall, this issue will focus on the scientific challenges of ubiquitous user modelling in today’s dynamic environments.

This UMUAI special issue builds on recent activities in this area and is designed to solicit papers that report on recent significant advances, carry out innovative explorations, and establish foundations for further research. It interprets the notion of context broadly, as any additional conditions and circumstances beyond user profile and item content information that may affect user preferences for items.  It is intended to reflect the changes in the domain in the past seven years (since the previous special issue) and therefore, a wide range of topics are included. Those topics include (but are not limited to):

* Infrastructure for Ubiquitous User Modelling
* Information storage for easy access and reasoning
* Information fusion from multiple sources
* Standardization in user modeling
* Privacy as an infrastructure component
* Communicating user modeling data
 * Between user models and environments
 * Between applications
 * Back to the user model
* User model architectures
 * Distributed, in the cloud
 * Local
 * Synchronization of user models (connected/disconnected modes)
* Lifelong Ubiquitous User Modelling
* Storing personal information
-- Application domains for Lifelong Ubiquitous User Modelling
 * How to deal with current versus historical data
* Reasoning and abstraction of personal information
* Remembering and forgetting personal information
* Application domains for Lifelong Ubiquitous User Modelling
* Cultural Heritage
* Mobile recommenders
* Mobile learning
* Ubiquitous User Modelling with Situated Public Displays
* Health and Wellness
* Privacy aspects of Ubiquitous User Modeling

TELLNET Visualization - The Shape of Europe emerges from the Collaboration of European Schools

Posted on 06:48 by Unknown
Cooperation among European Schools (Data from a eTwinning data set)

This visualization from my colleague Pham Manh Cuong is from the upcoming TELLNET deliverable about dynamic visualizations of data from the eTwinning network. The image visualizes European schools as small, colored circles and the collaboration between schools as lines between the circles. The colors are coding different subjects while the size of labels indicates the intensiveness (number) of collaborations. It is really impressive how the shape of Europe emerges from this visualization of the school collaboration network.

1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Data Management, Mining, and Computing on Social Networks (MobiSocial 2013)

Posted on 02:39 by Unknown
Call for Papers
1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Data Management, Mining, and
Computing on Social Networks (MobiSocial 2013)

Sunday, June 3, 2013 / Milan, Italy
(colocated with IEEE MDM 2013)

http://www.iis.sinica.edu.tw/~dnyang/mobisocial13/

*AIMS & TOPICS OF INTEREST*

Recently, social network research has advanced rapidly with the prevalence
of the online social websites and instant messaging social communications
systems. In addition to utilizing a desktop computer to write blogs, upload
photos and chat with friends, an explosively increasing number of people are
now used to share personal location information to friends on the fly with
mobile devices, thanks to the development of broadband wireless networks and
location sensing technologies. These social network systems are usually
characterized by complex network structures and abundant contextual
information. Moreover, by incorporating the spatial dimension, mobile and
location-based social networks are now immersed in people¡¦s everyday life
via numerous innovative websites, such Facebook Places, Foursquare, Buddy
Beacon, FindMe, Loopt, and Weibo. In addition, mobile social networks can be
exploited to foster many interesting applications and analysis, such as
recommendations of locations and travel planning of friends, location-based
viral marketing, community discovery, group mobility and behavior modeling,
etc.

Researchers are increasingly interested in addressing a wide spectrum of
challenges in mobile social networks to extract useful knowledge, including
identifying common static topological structures and dynamic evolutions of
social networks, and exploiting location-based and contextual information
embedded with mobile social networks to find out useful insights. The
insights can provide important implications on community discovery, anomaly
detection, trend prediction with the applications in many domains, such as
recommendation systems, information retrieval, future prediction, and so on.
In light of the above crucial need, sophisticated data mining and query
processing techniques on both social and spatial dimensions are demanding
for extracting representative information from mobile social network. In
addition, the data generated from social networks and social media streams
at any time in any place have outpaced the capability to process, analyze,
and mining those datasets. It is thus imperative to develop scalable and
efficient algorithms for processing and mining Big Data generated from
mobile social networks. In contrast to other areas in data management and
mining, social and human factors are also important and thereby encouraged
to be properly included in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research
of mobile social networks.

The 1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Data Management, Mining, and
Computing on Social Networks (MobiSocial 2013) will serve as a forum for
researchers and technologists to discuss the state-of-the-art, present their
contributions, and set future directions in data management and mining for
mobile social networks.

Special Issue on Measuring Influence in Social Media

American Behavioral Scientist *

Special Issue on Measuring Influence in Social Media

Editors:
Anatoliy Gruzd <gruzd@dal.ca>, School of Information Management, Dalhousie University
Barry Wellman <wellman@chass.utoronto.ca>, Department of Sociology, University of Toronto

Background
The American Behavioral Scientist (ABS) invites submissions for a special issue on Measuring Influence in Social Media. The issue will deal with the notion of ‘influence’ in online and offline social networks with a particular focus on social networks formed and maintained on social media sites. Much of the difficulty in understanding influence in social networks (especially in social media) has to do with the inability to define influence, and then distinguish it from a number of other factors. For example, is it the actual content of a message being exchanged that exerts the most influence on users? In other words, can user-behavior within social media networks be explained in terms of users seeking useful information for some discrete and identifiable purpose? Or, conversely, is it the nature and/or context of the relationship between exchanging actors that exerts influence on user behaviors? That is, can user-behavior be explained in terms of users being influenced by celebrity or prestige, for example? Questions like these will be at the center of this special issue.
One of the primary goals of this special issue is to provide a common platform where best practices and cutting edge practical and theoretical frameworks related to the study of influence in social media can be accessed and utilized by all concerned parties. The issue would become a useful index for current methodologies for evaluating the influence and effectiveness of the activities of individuals and organizations on social media, and would provide a framework that other researchers can use and build on in the future.

Intended audience
The target audience for this issue would include scholars, students and business leaders who focus on social media and online social networks. The interdisciplinary and cross-sector audience of the proposed special issue will ensure that diverse perspectives on, and attitudes towards, social media and networking will be considered. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches are all welcome.

Possible Topics
Manuscripts that would be of particular interest include:
  • a review of how this field has evolved over the last ten years, accounting for influences from other disciplines and covering some of the uses to which this kind of research has been applied in the past,
  • a discussion of common theories and methods used (or that can be used and how) to study ‘influence’ in social media including qualitative approaches, social network analysis, opinion mining, etc.,
  • a discussion of potential roles and impacts this field of research may hold for academic, business, political, and other socio-economic spheres,
  • case studies focusing on measuring ‘influence’ in social media in the areas such as Internet and Society, Political Mobilization & Engagement, Trust, Online and Offline Communities, and related areas,
  • methodological articles that examine the difficulties of measuring influence in social media.
Examples of some potential research questions that the manuscripts in this issue will cover include the following:
  • How do we define ‘influence’ in social media and why is it important?
  • How do we determine who are the influential members in an online community?
  • To what extent does ‘influence’ in one social media platform translate into ‘influence’ on another?
  • How to engender trust and/or detect falsehood in social media?
  • Do social media affect the political processes and how?
  • How do we reliably assess the impact of social influence occurring on social media platforms in offline networks?

Timeline
November 2012 – CFP is out
April 30, 2013 – Submissions are due
July 1, 2013 – Reviews are due
September 15, 2013 – Revisions are due
2014 – Publication

Submission guidelines

Special Issue on "Action-based Entrepreneurship Education" - WREMSD

World Review of Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development

Special Issue on: "Action-based Entrepreneurship Education"

Guest Editors:
Benson Honig, McMaster University, Canada
Tomas Karlsson and Karen Williams Middleton, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Entrepreneurial competency developed through entrepreneurship education is increasingly in demand from policy-makers and practitioners (OECD 2011; World Economic Forum 2011), with high expectations placed on entrepreneurship education to improve students skills and abilities in new venture creation and research commercialisation.

Entrepreneurship education has shown a trend towards an emphasis on business and financial planning (Mwasalwiba 2010). However, several researchers have questioned the efficiency of this pedagogical approach, arguing that it is insufficient in delivering the knowledge for how to act entrepreneurially in general, and more specifically, how to create new firms (Gruber 2007; Honig and Samuelsson 2012; Karlsson and Honig 2007).

Entrepreneurship courses at universities have taught the topic traditionally focusing on the development of students’ knowledge about entrepreneurship. In recent years, researchers have suggested a more action-based education (Rasmussen and Sørheim 2006), encouraging students to generate experience in entrepreneurship in order to develop their skills and abilities (Cope and Watts 2000; Lackeus and Williams Middleton 2011; Mwasalwiba 2010).

While an action-based perspective on entrepreneurial education emphasises “learning through entrepreneurship” rather than “learning about entrepreneurship”, there is a need to bridge theories concerned with informal entrepreneurial learning and more formalised education-based learning theories (Politis 2005; Rae 2006).

This leads to questions regarding how educational design for entrepreneurial learning can be created and implemented, understanding the key components of how design and delivery contributes to learning, as well as how learning outcomes are accessed and communicated for both educational and more “real-world” purposes. An education emphasising “real” entrepreneurial action needs a context within which this action can be realised. In what way do the structures and organisations in and around an education influence the potential for entrepreneurial action, and as a consequence, how do they influence the possibility for students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and abilities?

This special issue aims to improve the link between entrepreneurship research and education, to develop pedagogies on how to advance entrepreneurial skills and abilities, and to explore how context influences the possibilities for action-based entrepreneurship. We hope for contributions by entrepreneurship researchers and educators alike.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the NFF conference’s entrepreneurship education track (https://nff2013.hi.is/?page_id=123), but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.
