Assistant Professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology

Posted on 03:45 by Unknown
Assistant Professor Information Systems

The Databases and Hypermedia group of the TU/e has a vacancy for an Assistant Professor in Information Systems, with a strong research background and interest in some of the following topics: Web Science, Human-Technology Interaction, Databases, Hypermedia, Web Data Management, Web Technology, Data Mining, Information Retrieval, Recommender Systems, Web Analytics, Web Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Adaptive Systems (listed in no particular order).

The group "Databases and Hypermedia" (DH) is world-leading in the area of adaptive information systems and services and currently performs leading research on supporting technologies such as web data management, semantic web, data mining, recommender systems, information discovery and web analytics. The group has produced the most referenced reference models for adaptive hypermedia and developed the most popular general- purpose adaptive systems. The group works in application fields for adaptive technology, including e-learning, e-culture, e-entertainment and e-business. There is close collaboration with the non-profit and for-profit industry, locally, nationally and in European collaborative projects.

In 2011 the TU/e started a new bachelor program in Web Science in which the DH group plays a leading role, currently teaching courses in Human-Technology Interaction, Databases, Hypermedia, Web Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Web Analytics. The group also contributes to different master programs with topics like Advanced Databases, Web Information Systems, Information Retrieval and Adaptive Systems.
The TU/e is member of the World-Wide Web Consortium (W3C), giving its staff the opportunity to influence the future of Web technology and Web standards.

Tasks
As assistant professor in Information Systems, and Databases and Hypermedia in particular, you will fulfil the following activities:

Teaching (50%) of courses in the Information Systems and Web Science area (see topics mentioned above) and developing new courses in this area.
The teaching duties also include the supervision of internships and master projects in the entire field of information systems, either internal to the university or executed at companies and institutes outside the TU/e.

Perform research (50%) in some of the topics listed above (in the first paragraph), thereby broadening and/or deepening the scope of research topics studied in the DH group. The research duties also include the supervision of PhD students and writing and submitting research proposals.

(Limited) administrative tasks in the Computer Science Department.

Note that in order to professionalize the teaching skills of its staff the TU/e requires all lecturers to take a teaching-training program (leading up to the BKO, a basic certificate in teaching). This training is offered by the TU/e and the hours are subtracted from the initial teaching load.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

* A PhD degree in computer science, information systems, web science
or a closely related field.
* A good publication track record in fields related to the (above mentioned)
interest areas of the DH research group.
* Interest in the research, development and application of web-based technology
for (social) communication, information services, information discovery
and related topics.
* Teaching experience (e.g. lectures, practical exercises, supervision of
trainees and graduates);
* Good communication and didactial skills.
* Ability to function in Dutch and English. Teaching at the TU/e is done in English,
but candidates are expected to know or be willing to learn Dutch in order to
function in the social and administrative processes which use the Dutch language,
and in order to function in and become part of the society in the Netherlands.

You are expected to have or obtain the 'Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs' (University Teaching Qualification) within three years from the appointment date.

Appointment and Salary

We offer:
* A challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious university and a stimulating
research environment;
* A position as assistant professor (universitair docent) in the Database and
Hypermedia Group of the Computer Science Subdepartment;
* A full-time tenure track appointment for 4 years in accordance with the
Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, with an evaluation after 3 years.
In this period the candidate has the opportunity to show the potential to
(later) function at the associate professor level; positive evaluation then
leads to a permanent position;
* Support with your professional and personal development;
* A gross salary between € 3.195 and € 4.374 per month depending on experience and knowledge;
* An extensive package of fringe benefits (e.g. excellent technical infrastructure,
the possibility of child care and excellent sports facilities).

Information

More information can be obtained from:
* about the position: prof. dr. Paul M.E. De Bra,
phone: +31(0)40 247 2602, e-mail: debra@win.tue.nl
* about the employment conditions: mrs. Nel Evers BSc, HR advisor,
phone +31(0)40 247 2321, e-mail: pzwin@tue.nl
