The ROLE Requirements Bazaar reached Beta-Status!

Posted on 01:22 by Unknown
Screenshot of the ROLE Requirements Bazaar

Please take a look around, test its functions and help us improve by reporting issues and/or ideas for improvement. You can do so best by clicking on the "Improve" flag in the top left corner. Thanks!

The general idea of the ROLE Requirements Bazaar is described in our EC-TEL paper and presentation about "The Social Requirements Engineering (SRE) Approach to Developing a Large-scale Personal Learning Environment Infrastructure". There is another publication "Der Bazaar der Anforderungen - Open Innovation in emergent Communities" (in German) describing the Bazaar from an Open Innovation perspective.

The ideas for the Requirements Bazaar have been developed in the RWTH Achen University ACIS group by Dominik Renzel, Anna Hannemann and me in the CONTICI and the ROLE project. A first prototype was realized by Effie Lai-Chong Law and Arunangsu Chatterjee  from the University of Leicester. The current prototype was realized by our master student Malte Behrendt.

New Springer Book (in German) - Kreatives Prozessdesign by Thomas Hermann

Posted on 01:04 by Unknown
This is the new Springer book "Kreatives Prozessdesign" by my colleague Thomas Hermann from the Ruhr-Universtität Bochum in Germany.

Like most other human activities process design gets better if some creativity is involved. As the Germans are undoubted the master of process engineering sometimes a little bit of creativity can add to the innovative power of processes. This book is giving a lot of examples and principle ideas how to connect process modeling and creativity techniques.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Information Systems Special Issue on Cloud Intelligence
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/information-systems/
http://eric.univ-lyon2.fr/cloud-i/?page_id=243

With the increasing success of cloud computing, cloud business intelligence
"as a service" offerings have arisen, both from cloud start-ups and major BI
industry vendors. Beyond porting BI features into the cloud, which already
implies numerous issues (e.g., BigData/NoSQL database modeling and storage,
data localization, data marketplaces, security and privacy, performance,
cost and usage models...), this trend also poses new, broader challenges for
making data analytics available to small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs),
non-governmental organizations, web communities (e.g., supported by social
networks), and even the average citizen. This vision requires new
integration and deployment models. For example, some deployments would
benefit from an integrated database of private and open data.

Following the Cloud-I workshop at VLDB 2012
(http://eric.univ-lyon2.fr/cloud-i/), the aim of this special issue of
Information Systems is to attract the best papers related to the emerging

- Cloud Intelligence on linked data
- Collaborative Cloud Intelligence
- Cooperative Cloud Intelligence
- Crowd intelligence
- Data analytics as a service
- Data mining over the cloud
- Economic/payment models for cloud intelligence
- Extracting, Transforming and Loading data over the cloud
- Human-Computer interaction for Cloud Intelligence
- Massive data analytics: algorithms, techniques and systems
- OLAP over the cloud
- Open and private data cross-integration
- Personal intelligence

Special Issue on Service and Cloud Based Data Integration - JGC

Posted on 03:39 by Unknown

Special Issue on Service and Cloud Based Data Integration at Springer Journal of Grid Computing

   Website: http://users.sdsc.edu/~jianwu/JGC-SCDI-2013/

Introduction

Integration and synthesis of heterogeneous, autonomous and distributed data sources have been an essential and hard issue in enterprise computing, scientific computing and social computing. It is not always feasible to achieve effective data integration around definite schemas when there are mismatches in cross-domain integration and when such issues as compatibility, scalability, timeliness, and user manipulation are concerned. Many traditional data integration approaches/frameworks begin to show their limitations, especially when dealing with situations like data deluge and data source evolution. Service Oriented Architecture, Cloud computing and Web 2.0 techniques have brought light to dealing with these hard issues. Recent years have seen some important progresses and potentials. Some "Data as a Service" applications target fast, on-demand data integration and latest data provisioning. Meanwhile, SOA is being employed by many large projects to deal with data collection, integration and discovery challenges across data repositories.

The Special Issue on Service and Cloud Based Data Integration will provide the scientific and industrial community a dedicated forum, within the prestigious Springer Journal of Grid Computing, for presenting novel models, methodologies, and solution patterns that address the data integration issue and fit in the service and cloud based settings. This special issue will focus on the use of service and/or cloud based technologies to meet the new data integration challenges that are not well served by the current approaches. We believe this venue will be an excellent place to help researchers, practitioners and vendors in this community show latest progresses, determine future goals, and present techniques for future development of data integration.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
Service Abstraction and Virtualization for Distributed Data Integration
Modeling and Composition of Data Services
Scalability, Reliability and other Quality Assurance of Data Integration
Correctness Verification and Freshness of Distributed Data Integration Results
Performance Analysis and Optimization of Distributed Data Integration Process
Agile and Ad-hoc Integration of Heterogeneous Data Sources

The Social Requirements Engineering (SRE) Approach to Developing a Large-scale Personal Learning Environment Infrastructure - ROLE Presentation at EC-TEL 2012

Posted on 02:46 by Unknown

In the frame of the ROLE project I gave this presentation on "The Social Requirements Engineering (SRE) Approach to Developing a Large-scale Personal Learning Environment Infrastructure" at the EC-TEL 2012 in Saarbrücken Germany, on September 21, 2012.

Abstract. In this paper, we first reflect on the limitations of applying traditional requirements engineering (RE) approaches to the development of a large-scale PLE infrastructure, which is precisely the aim of a technology-enhanced learn-ing project called ROLE. The Social Requirements Engineering (SRE) ap-proach has been proposed as an appropriate alternative. Early SRE prototypes based on an agent- and goal-oriented conceptual model conceived across a five-staged requirement lifecycle (elicitation, negotiation, selection, development and feedback) were implemented. We report results of preliminary evaluation and lessons learnt. Several relevant issues have been identified, including the lack of a consensual understanding of key concepts, lurking within Community of Practices (CoP), and cultural differences. Possible solutions are proposed to address the issues such as templates, mandatory voting, and prioritization model

Introduction
--------------

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) aims to design, develop and test
socio-technical innovations that will support and enhance
learning practices of both individuals and organisations.
It is an application domain that generally addresses all types of
technology research & development aiming to support of teaching and
learning activities, and considers meta-cognitive and reflective skills
such as self-management, self-motivation, and effective informal and
self-regulated learning. Information retrieval is a pivotal activity
in TEL, and the deployment of recommender systems has attracted
increased interest during the past years as it addresses the
information overload problem in TEL scenarios with a low cost approach.

Recommendation methods, techniques and systems open an interesting
new approach to facilitate and support learning and teaching.
There are plenty of resources available on the Web, both in terms of
digital learning content and people resources (e.g. other learners,
experts, tutors) that can be used to facilitate teaching and
learning tasks. The challenge is to develop, deploy and evaluate
systems that provide learners and teachers with meaningful guidance
in order to help identify suitable learning resources from a
potentially overwhelming variety of choices.

Aim & Scope
-------------
Recommender Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning: Research Trends & Applications
aims to collect contributions that will range from research papers
to system presentations and that will address the following topics on the application
of recommender systems in the domain of education:

i) user needs, tasks and activities to be supported
ii) requirements for the design and deployment of recommender systems
iii) novel recommendation algorithms and systems
iv) evaluation criteria, methods and studies

* Requirements for the deployment of TEL recommender systems
* Data sets for TEL recommender systems
* Recommendation algorithms and systems for TEL
* Transfer of successful algorithms and systems from other application areas
* Evaluation criteria and methods for TEL recommender systems
* Experiences from actual implementation in teaching, learning and/or community building

Submission Procedure
----------------------------

All submitted manuscripts will be peer reviewed. Contributions should be original
and not simultaneously submitted to other venues. Manuscripts that have been included
in previous workshop/conference proceedings should include at least 30% of new material
in order to be considered for publication.

Detailed manuscript instructions are available from Springer Book Author Guidelines:
