Extending the current Internet and providing connection, communication, and inter-networking between devices and physical objects, or "Things," is a growing trend that is often referred to as Internet of Things. With the ability of mobile devices and sensors to observe and monitor their environments, increasing the coordination between things in the real world and their counterparts on the Web, it goes beyond Internet of Things and introduces the new concept of Web of Things.
This Web of Things is expected to produce large volumes of data related to the physical world, and intelligent solutions are required to enable connectivity, inter-networking, and relevance between the physical world and the corresponding digital world resources. The intelligent methods should support detecting events, observing changes in an environment, and creating perception by processing and mining cyber-physical data. The information processing solutions need to consider dynamicity and quality changes as well as uncertainty issues in dealing with the Web of Things data.
This special issue seeks innovative contributions to intelligent system and interaction design, information processing and knowledge engineering, and adaptive solutions to assist in efficient utilization of the Web of Things. Potential topics could include, but are not limited to:
Semantics and information modelling for Web of Things
Knowledge engineering and knowledge-based systems on Web of Things
Machine learning and cyber-physical data-stream mining
Cyber-Physical-Social computing and spatio-temporal data analytics
Exploiting the physical world data for situation-aware decision making
Context-aware and situation-aware computing
Linked-data and semantic enabled systems
Semantic sensor streams and distributed stream processing
Intelligent human-computer interfaces and cyber-physical data visualizations
Feedback and control mechanisms for Human/Thing interactions
AI solutions for Cyber-Physical-Social security and privacy
Applicatioion, deployments, and evaluations of case studies
Business models and opportunities
Submission Guidelines
Submissions should be 3,000 to 5,400 words (counting a standard figure or table as 200 words) and should follow IEEE Intelligent Systems style and presentation guidelines (www.computer.org/intelligent/author). The manuscripts cannot have been published or be currently submitted for publication elsewhere.
We strongly encourage submissions that include audio, video, and community content, which will be featured on the IEEE Computer Society Web site along with the accepted papers.
