Six PhD/One Post-Doc Positions "Locating Media" (also HCI)

For October 1, 2012, the interdisciplinary research school (post-graduate program) „Locating Media" (DFG-funded "Graduiertenkolleg" GRK 1769) of the University of Siegen is accepting applications for

- one doctoral position in computer science/information systems (Specialisation: HCI; salary category TV-L 13, 100%), for two years with the option to extend the contract for a third year after a positive evaluation (according to DFG standards), and
- five doctoral position in cultural and social studies (salary category TV-L 13, 65%), for two years with the option to extend the contract for a third year after a positive evaluation (according to DFG standards).

The post-graduate program Locating Media supports media research that investigates locative and situational media processes in social and cultural studies. Eight fields are involved in the postgraduate program: media studies, history, computer science/information systems (HCI), literary studies, linguistics, ethnology, political science, sociological technology studies. Transdisciplinary developments in current and historical research are encouraged.

In addition to doctoral and post-doctoral positions, the post-graduate program offers an interdisciplinary network, expert mentoring, and an educational program, as well as travel funding for participatory observation, archival research, and a semester abroad. „Locating Media" participants are expected to produce distinguished scholarly achievement and to display interest in the content and methods of the program's interdisciplinary concerns, with conscientious support of all program events.

Proficiency in German is required.

Job description:

This position will enable a student to complete his/her doctoral degree.
We expect:
– participation in the educational program of the Research Training Group (basic seminars on theory & method, workshops, seminars and research colloquium)
– attendance of the Research School's events such as workshops, international conferences, intensive workshops, summer schools, regular presentations of interim findings for the individual research projects (Research Colloquium, Lecture Series)

The position is not connected to any mandatory teaching assignment.

Your profile:
− a Master's degree or a Diploma in one of the following areas of study: media studies, history, computer science/ information systems, literary studies, linguistics, ethnology, political science, sociology, sociological technology studies
− outstanding scholarly achievementa
− research project in one of the areas of study listed above (10-page project prospectus including the planned research schedule)

Additionally, the Research School „Locating Media" of the University of Siegen is accepting applications for

- one post-doctoral post (salary category TV-L 13, 100%) for two years (according to DFG standards). The contract duration is in accordance with the German Law on Temporary Employment of Scholars and Researchers.

Job description:
This position will enable a scholar to progress toward a postdoctoral lecturing qualification.

We expect:
– attendance of the Research School's events such as workshops, international conferences, intensive workshops, summer schools
- regular presentations of interim findings for the individual research projects (Research Colloquium, Lecture Series)
– mandatory teaching assignment of one course per semester
– co-organisation of workshops and international conferences

Your profile:
− outstanding doctoral degree in one of the following areas of study: media studies, history, computer science/information systems, literary studies, linguistics, ethnology, political science, sociology, sociological technology studies
– outstanding scholarly achievement
– research project in one of the areas of study listed above (10-page project prospectus including the planned research schedule)
