"Learning within and from the 'Smart Cities'" (SCiLearn 2012)

Posted on 04:30 by Unknown

"Learning within and from the 'Smart Cities'"
(SCiLearn 2012)
Sinaia (Romania), September 2-4, 2012

co-located at
ICWL 2012
http://www.hkws.org/conference/icwl2012/

organized by
Dept. of Science and Tehnology of Education&     IaD School of Tor Vergata
University of Rome
and
PH Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education.

Temporary workshop website:
http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/inevent/events/scilearn2012/index.php

-----------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTION
-------------
This workshop proposes itself as a "think tank" to foster a reflection on how the way we learn may be influenced and changed because of the development of 'smart cities', but also 'smart villages' and 'smart territories'.
From the Far East, to the Americas and to Europe, cities and their surroundings are evolving towards a new dimension in which the info infrastructure becomes an indispensable asset of our life, contributes to the development of info-ecosystems embracing 'smart mobility and last-mile logistics', 'smart health', 'smart government', 'smart culture and tourism', the sustainability of the natural resources and the green economy. Such integrated effort of info-urbanism is expected to produce social innovation and, inevitably, leads to wonder about what forms can take the smart education underlined by all pieces that compose the mosaic of the info-ecosystems.
The person, considered in all her/his complexity, will be placed at the center of educational contexts and scenarios increasingly ubiquitous, complex, organic. The perimeter of the physical space in which the educational experiences develop will become increasingly undefined, liquid and will host more and more nomadic and informal practices characterized by a high density of social interactions. In these scenarios, the mediating role of technology will widen over the time to:
foster relationships with the natural environments, filter content needed to support meaningful experiences at glocal level, disclose feedback necessary to learn how to manage "in action", the complexity of static and dynamic, of learning contexts and processes.

Through which educational path people will become "participatorly" aware citizens of the future "SimCities"? How will we learn from the open books that are represented by the cities of art? How will data flowing from sensorized areas will be elaborated to support awareness and learning? How will our behavior be influenced by knowledge of co-evolution mechanisms and limits of the ecosystems? Will the educational infrastructure be smart enough to readjust, even autopoietically, to satisfy the needs that everyone could develop life long, in different contexts?
The future perspective is that of territories that become increasingly open to awareness and participation and of a 'smart education' that becomes more and more spatially widespread and temporally continuous.

IMPORTANT DATES
----------------
* June 10, 2012: Deadline for submission of contributions
* July 1, 2012: Authors' Notification on the review process results
* July 15, 2012: Authors' Registration Deadline and upload of Final Camera-Ready Manuscript

TOPICS OF INTEREST
-----------------
Papers are solicited on the following 'open' list of topics:

• Technological Ecosystems supporting learning within and from the 'smart cities' (toward 'web-mobile-internet of thing' integrated
environments)
• Future 'smart cities' learning scenarios (contexts and methods) • Ecological monitoring and visualization of flows, behaviours, experience's styles and 'smart cities' learning • The impact of contextualization, glocalities, identities • Educational Ecosystems: from ''intelligence' to autopoietic education
(edupoiesis)

Special Issue on Emotion in Games - IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing

Posted on 01:05 by Unknown

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON AFFECTIVE COMPUTING
Special Issue on Emotion in Games

Computer games research has recently experienced the adoption of its own
technological advancements (rich interactivity, 3D graphical visualization
and role playing game-style incentive structures) by an increasing number of
domains (e-commerce, news reading, web 2.0 services, and human-computer
interfaces). The capability of games delivering enhanced user immersion and
engagement defines the driving force behind this adoption. Inevitably, games
are unique elicitors of emotion and the study of user experience in those
environments is of paramount importance for the understanding of gameplay
internal mechanics.

Analysing, capturing and synthesizing player experience has been a
challenging area within the crossroads of cognitive science, psychology,
artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. Additional gameplay
input modalities such as 3D acceleration (e.g. Wii), image and speech (e.g.
Kinect) enhance the importance of the study and the complexity of player
experience. Sophisticated techniques from artificial and computational
intelligence can be used to synthesize the affective state of player (and
non-player) characters, based on multiple modalities of player-game
interaction. Multiple modalities of input can also provide a novel means for
game platforms to measure player satisfaction and engagement when playing,
without necessarily having to resort to postplay and off-line
questionnaires. Adaptation techniques such as complex (emotional and social)
agent behaviours can also be used to maximize player’s experience, thereby,
closing the affective game loop. In addition to this, procedural content
generation techniques may be employed, based on the level of user engagement
and interest, to dynamically produce new, adaptable and personalized
content.

This special issue aims at bringing together contributions from specialists
in affective computing, artificial intelligence, user experience research
and multi-modal interfaces that will advance the state-of-the-art in player
experience research; affect induction, sensing and modelling; and
affect-driven game adaptation. Research areas relevant to the special issue
include, but are not limited to, the following:

• modelling affect in the context of games
• artificial and computational intelligence for modelling player experience
• cognitive/affective models of player satisfaction/immersion/engagement
• analysis of player’s facial expressions, hand and body gestures, body stance, gaze and physiology
• speech recognition and prosody analysis of players
• mapping low-level cues to affect and emotion
• using games to record affective databases
• reproducing player affect in the game environment
• affective game characters
• adaptive learning and player experience
• affect-driven procedural content generation
• affect expression in games
• methods for emotion measurement in games

Submissions must not have been previously published, with the exception that
substantial extensions of conference papers can be considered. The authors
will be required to follow the Author’s Guide for manuscript submission to
the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing at:
http://www.computer.org/portal/web/tac/author . Full manuscripts should be
submitted electronically through IEEE’s Manuscript Central:
https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/taffc-cs . Be sure to select “Special Issue
on Emotion in Games” as the Manuscript Type, rather than “Regular Paper.”
This will ensure that your paper is directed to the special issue editors.
IEEE Tools for Authors are available online at:

http://www.iicm.edu/CAF2011

In conjunction with
15th International Conference on
Interactive Computer aided Learning (ICL 2012)

CAF 2012  –  September 26 – 28, 2012, in Villach, Austria

Fifth Special Track on
Computer-based Knowledge & Skill Assessment and Feedback in Learning Settings (CAF)
http://www.iicm.edu/CAF2012

This special track will take place during ICL 2012 in in Villach, Austria (26 - 28 September 2012) as a special programme item.

The Special Track CAF 2012 provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of computer-based knowledge & skill assessment in learning settings and based on that feedback provision for students and teachers. This year CAF is organized in cooperation with the European funded project ALICE (Adaptive Learning via Intuitive/Interactive, Collaborative and Emotional System), http://www.aliceproject.eu.

The International Conference on Interactive Computer aided Learning (ICL) is an interdisciplinary conference which aims to focus on the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in interactive computer aided learning.

Background

Our modern life at the beginning of the 21st century is strongly influenced by effects such as rapidly changing and developing information, technology-enhanced communication and information access, and new forms of production and services in a globalized world. This situation requires individuals to adapt their skills and competencies. Consequently, educational objectives and societal expectations have changed significantly in recent years. Modern learning settings must consider learning community aspects as well as learner-centered, knowledge-centered and assessment-centered aspects.
By focusing on the assessment, this concept can be further distinguished in (1) summative assessment, performed at the end of a set of learning activities, and (2) formative assessment, which is intended to give continuous feedback to students and teachers. The latter mentioned formative assessment gives information about the current state of knowledge and/or the degree of knowledge acquisition within learning activities.
Assessment is an important component of modern teaching and learning processes in face-to-face courses as well as in e-learning environments; it provides valuable feedback to teachers and students which allows the revision and adaptation of teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, assessment activities and results can also be utilized for building and strengthening metacognitive skills. However, continuous and frequent assessment in learning processes may cause excessive efforts and costs. Therefore, computer-assisted assessment systems (CaAS) and computer-based assessment systems (CbAS) have become of increasing interest over the years. Assessment systems may support parts or the entire chain of the assessment lifecycle. This lifecycle includes authoring and management of assessment items, compilation of specific tests, performance of assessments, and compilation and management results. Additionally, emerging interest in the sharing and re-use of assessment items or compiled assessment tests and the exchangeability of assessment outcomes has resulted in standardization efforts, such as the IMS Question & Test Interoperability Specification (IMS QTI).

The special track will bring together international researchers as well as practitioners from different organisations who will have plenty of time for networking and real-world knowledge sharing.

CAF is interested in novel scientific research, findings from experiments and results from real-life applications. We invite submissions that deal with issues including, but not limited to:

·         Aspects of formative and summative assessment
·         History and challenges of e-assessment

Dynamic Network Analysis for Computer Science Publications

Posted on 01:44 by Unknown

Dynamic network properties of ICALT, ICWL and ECTEL

AERCS is a visualization tool for communities of academic events in Computer Science. It is developed and hosted by the Advanced Community Information Systems (ACIS) group at  RWTH Aachen University, Germany. Currently, conferences and journals from the DBLP dataset are visualized. Other data sets will be integrated in the future.  While this bibliographic data set is quite comprehensive it does not show all publications!

Dynamic network analysis uses time series analysis of networks to explore dynamic patterns of networks such as growth and decay. A typical result of our research is the dynamic comparison of computer science communities. A computer science conference or journal can be compared by time series analysis for typical social network growth patterns like density, diameter, clustering coefficient, largest connected component, average path length and maximum betweenness. In our example above, we compare three major conferences in technology enhanced learning: the EC-TEL, the ICALT and the ICWL community. Here, we visualize the time series analysis of the co-authorship network of the three conferences.
For the co-authorship network, the emergence of the giant component (largest component) indicates the cohesiveness of collaboration within the community, while the betweenness shows the existence of gatekeepers and their importance. The clustering coefficient measures the extent to which the community is clustered into sub-communities. Other parameters such as diameter and average shortest path length, show whether the community is still developing or whether it is stable. A complete analysis of the three communities will be published in a future issue of the Journal of Educational Technology & Society.

Everybody can use this service for comparing journals and conference in computer science by means of dynamic network analysis. Just visit AERCS and test it out!

This service is brought to you by the chair of information systems and databases at RWTH Aachen University.
